Romney ‘enjoyed' Eastwood’s RNC speech, aide says Posted: 31 Aug 2012 11:51 AM PDT A top adviser to Mitt Romney's campaign downplayed tensions over Clint Eastwood's rambling Republican National Convention speech, insisting the candidate thought the actor's routine was funny. Stuart Stevens, a senior strategist to the Republican nominee, said he was standing backstage with Romney as Eastwood delivered a speech in which he imagined a conversation he [...] |

Photos: See the issues voters want addressed at the DNC Posted: 31 Aug 2012 10:00 AM PDT By Roy A. Barnes, Cheyenne, Wyo. Medicare reform needs to be addressed at the Democratic National Convention. Specifics, not rhetoric, should be presented about how Medicare can be reformed so the under-55s, like me, will know what the Democrats' plans are to insure I'll have it when I begin to reach my later 60s, some 20 years from now. I may not agree with Paul Ryan's voucher plan for people like me, but at least he has a plan. It's time for Democrats to step up and announce their intentions of reforming Medicare in a way that's fair and realistic. |
Bernanke says Fed ready to act but short on specifics Posted: 31 Aug 2012 01:27 PM PDT Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke on Friday left the door wide open to a further easing of monetary policy, saying the stagnation in the U.S. labor market was a "grave concern," but he stopped short of providing a clear signal of imminent action. His stark language gave a temporary lift to U.S. stocks, but economists walked away from the Fed chairman's remarks still divided over whether the central bank would launch a fresh round of bond purchases at its upcoming meeting in September. ... |

Romney views Hurricane Isaac damage in Louisiana Posted: 31 Aug 2012 01:25 PM PDT Mitt Romney made a last-minute trip to the Gulf Coast to tour storm damage caused by Hurricane Isaac. The Republican nominee was invited to the region by Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, who joined him on a tour of Jean Lafitte, La., which was hit by severe flooding as the hurricane made landfall. Emergency crews [...] |

National Geographic removes ‘hardcore huntress’ from show Posted: 31 Aug 2012 02:45 PM PDT In just 24 hours, one man's online petition convinced the National Geographic Channel to rethink its plans to include a big-game hunter on a new show set to debut this fall. Conservationist Tim Martell, 42, says a lifetime of watching National Geographic specials inspired him to pursue a career dedicated to preserving animals and their [...] |
Up in the air with a human-powered helicopter Posted: 31 Aug 2012 02:25 PM PDT Students at University of Maryland are using pedal power to break a human-powered helicopter record (but hopefully to break nothing else). As surfaced by the blog Popsci, a video shows freshman Henry Enerson taking the vehicle up in the air—with nothing more than foot pedals keeping the thing above the ground—hovering eight feet up, and [...] |

Major quake off Philippines causes panic but minor damage Posted: 31 Aug 2012 09:55 AM PDT MANILA (Reuters) - An earthquake of 7.6 magnitude struck off the Philippines on Friday killing one person, damaging roads and bridges and sending people fleeing to higher ground in fear of a tsunami, a politician and authorities said. The quake was centered off the east coast, 91 miles off the town of Guiuan in Samar province at a depth of about 20 miles, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for much of the region, but cancelled it about two hours later. ... |
