In two pivotal legal cases, one on affirmative action and another on voting rights, a divided U.S. Supreme Court may be poised in the coming weeks to rule that racism is largely a relic of America's past. The question is apt as the nation nears a demographic tipping point, when non-whites become the country's majority for the first time. Sanity at issue at Wisconsin dad's trial for killing 3 girls

Posted: 31 Mar 2013 11:32 AM PDT

Attorney Donna Burger watches as Aaron Schaffhausen pleads guilty in a St. Croix County Courtroom on Thursday, March 28, 2013 in Hudson, Wis. Schaffhausen, 35, pleaded guilty to killing his three young daughters at their home in western Wisconsin, but still maintains he shouldn't be held responsible because he was insane. Schaffhausen changed his plea Thursday after more than a day of legal wrangling about what kind of evidence would be allowed at his trial. He answered yes when the judge asked if he was guilty. The change-in-plea means prosecutors won't have to prove Schaffhausen killed his daughters at their River Falls home last July 2012. The defense will have to prove he had a mental disease or defect, and that he lacked substantial capacity to appreciate that what he did was wrong or couldn't control his impulses. (AP Photo/The Star Tribune, Elizabeth Flores) MANDATORY CREDIT; ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS OUT; MAGS OUT; TWIN CITIES TV OUTHUDSON, Wis.
