FBI: OK for Congress to talk to Benghazi survivors Posted: 14 Nov 2013 04:06 PM PST WASHINGTON (AP) — FBI Director James Comey told senators Thursday he is not opposed to Congress speaking with the survivors of the 2012 attack on the diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya. That contradicts the Obama administration's position that such discussions would jeopardize the FBI's criminal case. |

Texas town evacuated after pipeline explosion Posted: 14 Nov 2013 01:28 PM PST By Erwin Seba HOUSTON (Reuters) - A Chevron Corp pipeline exploded near a tiny Texas town south of Dallas on Thursday, shooting flames high in the air and prompting evacuations from nearby homes and a school district, but no injuries were reported, the company and emergency officials said The explosion south of Milford, Texas, was caused by a construction crew that accidentally drilled into a 10-inch liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) line, Tom Hemrick, director of Hill County Emergency Management, told KTVT-TV in Dallas. He said all workers were accounted for "The fire is definitely getting smaller," Hemrick said of the conflagration in an open field near Milford, a town of 700 people some 50 miles south of Dallas. By mid-afternoon Chevron confirmed Hemrick's version of events, identifying the line as a Chevron-operated West Texas LPG system near Milford. |
VW hit with massive vehicle global recall Posted: 14 Nov 2013 09:13 AM PST is recalling over 2.6 million cars, about a third of them in China, to fix a variety of problems, a blow to a group striving to overtake Toyota and General Motors The recall involves vehicles from the German group's five largest brands by volume, including luxury Audis and core VW passenger cars, and is one of the largest in its history. "Carmakers riding on strong growth like VW must be terribly careful that they don't pay dearly for that growth by conceding losses on quality," said Stefan Bratzel, head of the Center of Automotive Management, a private think-tank near Cologne. VW, which has twelve brands and has boosted deliveries by half over the past six years to 9.3 million cars, said on Thursday it was recalling 800,000 of its Tiguan compact sport-utility vehicle due to the risk of a partial malfunctioning of lights at models assembled between early 2008 and mid-2011. |

Obama secret service agents removed over misconduct Posted: 14 Nov 2013 12:05 PM PST Two US Secret Service agents assigned to protect President Barack Obama have been relieved of their duties following allegations of misconduct, the Washington Post reported. The move comes a year after Secret Service agents were involved in a prostitution scandal in Colombia. The Post reported late Wednesday that Ignacio Zamora Jr., who was in charge of about two dozen agents in the president's security detail, was allegedly found last spring trying to re-enter a woman's room at a luxury hotel near the White House after leaving behind a bullet from his service weapon. In a subsequent probe, the service found that Zamora and another supervisor, Timothy Barraclough, sent sexually suggestive e-mails to a female subordinate. |

Businesses cut full-time workers to meet Obamacare mandate, study says Posted: 14 Nov 2013 04:42 AM PST First, President Obama had to backtrack from his promise that if you like your health insurance plan, under Obamacare "you can keep it." Now, a new study is suggesting that, under Obamacare, "If you like your workweek, you can't necessarily keep it, either." About 30 percent of small franchises and 12 percent of other small businesses say they are cutting work hours – or swapping full-time for part-time workers – because of the law, according to a poll sponsored by business groups. The moves are part of a bid to control health-care expenses, and they are a sign of how the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which was designed to greatly expand the number of Americans who have health insurance, could be having some unintended consequences in the job market. A key Obamacare incentive is an "employer mandate" that asks businesses to sponsor health insurance (or pay a penalty) if they have more than 50 full-time employees. |
