Analysis: Nuclear deal faces hard-line test

Even before Iran's envoys could pack their bags in Geneva after wrapping up a first-step nuclear deal with world powers, President Hassan Rouhani was opening a potentially tougher diplomatic front: Selling the give-and-take to his country's powerful interests led by the Revolutionary Guard. Whether Iran's hard-liners will aid or obstruct expanded UN inspections and other points of the accord stands as the biggest wild card on whether it can hit it marks and test Iran's claims that it does not seek nuclear weapons. Comet dances with sun, death; giving mixed signals

In this photo provided by NASA, a contrast-enhanced image produced from the Hubble images of comet ISON taken April 23, 2013 reveals the subtle structure in the inner coma of the comet. In this computer-processed view, the Hubble image has been divided by a computer model coma that decreases in brightness proportionally to the distance from the nucleus, as expected for a comet that is producing dust uniformly over its surface. ISON's coma shows enhanced dust particle release on the sunward-facing side of the comet's nucleus, the small, solid body at the core of the comet. This information is invaluable for determining the comet's shape, evolution, and spin of the solid nucleus. (AP Photo/NASA)WASHINGTON (AP) — Comet ISON is teasing the solar system as it dances with the sun and it's giving astronomers mixed signals.

Pope attacks 'tyranny' of markets, urges renewal in mission statement

Pope Francis walks away at the end of a mass to prepare an urn containing the relics of the Apostle St. Peter for public veneration, at the VaticanBy Naomi O'Leary VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Francis attacked unfettered capitalism as "a new tyranny" and beseeched global leaders to fight poverty and growing inequality, in a document on Tuesday setting out a platform for his papacy and calling for a renewal of the Catholic Church. The 84-page document, known as an apostolic exhortation, was the first major work he has authored alone as pope and makes official many views he has aired in sermons and remarks since he became the first non-European pontiff in 1,300 years in March. In it, Francis went further than previous comments criticizing the global economic system, attacking the "idolatry of money", and urged politicians to "attack the structural causes of inequality" and strive to provide work, healthcare and education to all citizens. "How can it be that it is not a news item when an elderly homeless person dies of exposure, but it is news when the stock market loses 2 points?" The pope said renewal of the Church could not be put off and said the Vatican and its entrenched hierarchy "also need to hear the call to pastoral conversion".

Karzai told U.S. National Security Advisor Susan Rice in Kabul on Monday that the United States must put an immediate end to military raids on Afghan homes and demonstrate its commitment to peace talks before he would sign a bilateral security pact, Karzai's spokesman said. The White House said Karzai had outlined new conditions in the meeting with Rice and "indicated he is not prepared to sign the promptly". "Without a prompt signature, the U.S. would have no choice but to initiate planning for a post-2014 future in which there would be no U.S. or NATO troop presence in Afghanistan," a White House statement quoted Rice as saying.

"We haven't established a list yet," UN and Arab League mediator Lakhdar Brahimi said. That left open the participation of Saudi Arabia, seen as a major sponsor the majority Sunni Muslim rebels, and Iran, which steadfastly back the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, which is dominated by Alawites derived from Islam's Shiite current. "These two countries will certainly be among the possible participants," Brahimi said after closed-door talks in Geneva with US and Russian officials.
