Crisis continues: Ukraine opposition says no to amnesty bill Posted: 29 Jan 2014 02:29 PM PST Ukraine's opposition on Wednesday defiantly refused to back an amnesty bill that would free activists and ease the country's worst crisis since independence, as Germany urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to use his sway to push for dialogue. The amnesty bill was passed by parliament with the backing of the ruling Regions Party in a chaotic late night session, but opposition MPs refused to vote and it appears unlikely the law could mark any breakthrough in the standoff. President Viktor Yanukovych has granted several concessions to protesters who have packed the centre of Kiev for the last two months, including accepting the resignation of Prime Minister Mykola Azarov. |

Iraqi gov't: Have you seen this man? Posted: 29 Jan 2014 09:10 AM PST The Iraqi interior ministry Wednesday published a photograph purportedly of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, leader of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, an Al-Qaeda-linked group fighting in Iraq and Syria. The photograph, the first of its kind published by an official source, provides a rare glimpse of the man leading a militant group blamed for killing countless Iraqis, as well as fighting the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. "Intelligence forces have obtained a recent portrait of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, and they also got three handwritten letters," said the statement accompanying the photograph, published on the ministry's website. Baghdadi's group has been blamed for a litany of attacks across Iraq in recent months, and ISIL has been involved in a deadly standoff with government forces in western Iraq's Anbar province. |

Petition to deport Justin Bieber passes White House threshold Posted: 29 Jan 2014 01:12 PM PST As if Barack Obama didn't have enough problems to deal with already, his administration now is being asked to weigh in on the grave matter of Justin Bieber's bad behavior. By midday Wednesday (1700 GMT), a petition on the White House website calling for the deportation of the Canadian-born teen idol had garnered 103,000 names -- easily surpassing the threshold of 100,000 signatures required for presidential consideration. "We the people of the United States feel that we are being wrongly represented in the world of pop culture," says the petition, created by one "J.A." in Detroit on January 23, the day Bieber was busted in Miami Beach for impaired driving and illegal drag racing in a flashy Italian sports car. "We would like to see the dangerous, reckless, destructive and drug-abusing Justin Bieber deported and his green card revoked. |

Holder: Justice Department investigating Target data breach Posted: 29 Jan 2014 02:59 PM PST By Lawrence Hurley and Mark Hosenball WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. spy agency chiefs on Wednesday called on Congress to draft stricter requirements for how retailers and other private businesses should inform government agencies and customers about big breaches of personal and financial data. The intervention by intelligence chiefs came as Attorney General Eric Holder confirmed that the Justice Department was investigating the massive hacking of consumer data from No. 3 U.S. retailer Target Corp during the holiday shopping season late last year. Also on Wednesday, several congressional committees signaled growing interest in recent data breaches, with the powerful House Oversight Committee scheduling a telephone briefing on Thursday with Target representatives. Separately, at Wednesday's threat hearing before the Senate Intelligence Committee, Barbara Mikulski of Maryland, where the National Security Agency is headquartered, asked intelligence chiefs if media leaks by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden had affected U.S. cybersecurity efforts. |
