Shrinking salamanders linked to climate change in study Posted: 14 Apr 2014 04:08 PM PDT Wild salamanders that live in the Appalachian Mountains are shrinking because they must burn more energy as the local climate gets hotter and drier, according to a new study. Researchers found that the salamanders they collected between 1980 and 2012 were 8 percent smaller than those collected in earlier decades, starting in 1957. The climate where the salamanders live has gotten warmer and drier, researchers said. "We compared the size of the museum specimens to the current animals and we were surprised to see that, in fact, many species has become smaller over just a 50- to 60-year period," said study author Karen Lips, a biologist at the University of Maryland. |
Obama has personal connection to Jewish center shootings Posted: 14 Apr 2014 01:04 PM PDT President Obama called on Americans to "stand united" against religious-based violence, following the shooting deaths Sunday of three people at two Jewish centers near Kansas City, Kan. "We have to keep coming together across faiths to combat the ignorance and intolerance, including anti-Semitism, that can lead to hatred and to violence, because we're all children of God," Mr. Obama said Monday at the annual Easter prayer breakfast at the White House. In his remarks, Obama noted a personal connection to two of the victims, a 14-year-old boy and his grandfather, who were shot outside the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City in Overland Park, Kan. The boy, Reat Underwood, and his grandfather, William Corporon, were members of a church whose minister played a role in Obama's second inauguration. |

Helium leak delays SpaceX cargo run to ISS Posted: 14 Apr 2014 01:28 PM PDT By Irene Klotz CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - Privately owned Space Exploration Technologies canceled its planned cargo run to the International Space Station on Monday after a helium leak was found in its rocket's first stage, NASA said. The launch of the Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon capsule had been slated for 4:58 p.m. EDT (2058 GMT). The next opportunity for the Falcon 9 to fly is 3:25 p.m. (1925 GMT) on Friday if the problem can be resolved, NASA said in a statement. The flight, the third of 12 under the firm's 1.6 billion contract with NASA, already had been delayed several times for technical issues, including a potential contamination concern with the rocket and damage to an Air Force ground tracking radar needed to monitor the Falcon's flight. |

Frustrated with Pistorius's frequent crying in the witness box, prosecutor Gerrie Nel toughened his questioning and accused the Paralympic star of crocodile tears.
