Three killed, two injured in small plane crash at Colorado airport Posted: 31 Aug 2014 03:55 PM PDT By Keith Coffman DENVER (Reuters) - Three people were killed and two injured on Sunday when a single-engine airplane crashed in a field adjacent to a runway at a northern Colorado airport, authorities said. Peter Knudson, spokesman for the National Transportation Safety Board, said the Piper PA-46 aircraft went down shortly before noon near the Erie Municipal Airport, about 25 miles northwest of Denver. "We don't know yet know if it was taking off or landing," said Knudson, adding that five people were on board the plane, which crashed in clear weather. Roger Rademacher, assistant fire chief with Mountain View Fire Rescue, said emergency crews found two people dead inside the wreckage of the six-seat airplane when they arrived at the scene. |
Aftershock hits California's Napa Valley Posted: 31 Aug 2014 08:20 AM PDT (Reuters) - California's Napa Valley, the site of a strong and damaging earthquake a week ago, was shaken by a small aftershock early on Sunday. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake, measuring magnitude 3.2, occurred five miles southwest of Napa. There were no immediate reports of damage. It was one of many aftershocks that have occurred since Aug. 24 when a magnitude 6.0 quake struck, the biggest to hit California's Bay Area in 25 years, injuring more than 200 people and damaging dozens of buildings. ... |

China slams door on full Hong Kong democracy in 2017 vote Posted: 31 Aug 2014 12:02 PM PDT By Michael Martina and James Pomfret BEIJING/HONG KONG (Reuters) - Pro-democracy activists vowed on Sunday to bring Hong Kong's financial hub to a standstill after China's parliament rejected their demands for the right to freely choose the former British colony's next leader in 2017. The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) endorsed a framework to let only two or three candidates run in the 2017 leadership vote. All candidates must first obtain majority backing from a nominating committee likely to be stacked with Beijing loyalists. The relatively tough decision by the NPC - China's final arbiter on the city's democratic affairs - makes it almost impossible for opposition democrats to get on the ballot. |
Israel claims West Bank land for possible settlement use, draws U.S. rebuke Posted: 31 Aug 2014 04:02 PM PDT By Jeffrey Heller JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel announced on Sunday a land appropriation in the occupied West Bank that an anti-settlement group termed the biggest in 30 years, drawing Palestinian condemnation and a U.S. Some 400 hectares (988 acres) in the Etzion Jewish settlement bloc near Bethlehem were declared "state land, on the instructions of the political echelon" by the military-run Civil Administration. "We urge the government of Israel to reverse this decision," a State Department official said in Washington, calling the move "counterproductive" to efforts to achieve a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians. Israel Radio said the step was taken in response to the kidnapping and killing of three Jewish teens by Hamas militants in the area in June. |
Officials: Iraqi forces break jihadist siege of Amerli Posted: 31 Aug 2014 12:48 PM PDT Iraqi forces broke through Sunday to the jihadist-besieged Shiite town of Amerli, where thousands of people have been trapped for more than two months with dwindling food and water supplies. It is the biggest offensive success for the Iraqi government since militants led by the Sunni jihadist group Islamic State (IS) overran large areas of five provinces in June, sweeping security forces aside. The breakthrough came as the United States carried out limited strikes in the area, the first time it has expanded its more than three-week air campaign against militants outside of Iraq's north. Aircraft from several countries also dropped humanitarian aid to Amerli. |

Fukushima fallout: Resentment grows in nearby Japanese city Posted: 31 Aug 2014 03:15 PM PDT By Mari Saito and Antoni Slodkowski IWAKI Japan (Reuters) - Like many of her neighbours, Satomi Inokoshi worries that her gritty hometown is being spoiled by the newcomers and the money that have rolled into Iwaki since the Fukushima nuclear disaster almost three and a half years ago. Property prices in Iwaki, about 60 km (36 miles) south of the wrecked nuclear plant, have jumped as evacuees forced from homes in more heavily contaminated areas snatch up apartments and land. "The situation around Iwaki is unsettled and unruly," said Ryosuke Takaki, a professor of sociology at Iwaki Meisei University, who has studied the town's developing divide. "There are many people who have evacuated to Iwaki, and there are all kinds of incidents caused by friction." HOSTS WEARY, GUESTS FRIGHTENED Residents across Fukushima prefecture hailed the first wave of workers who arrived to contain the nuclear disaster in 2011 as heroes. Cities like Iwaki also welcomed evacuees from towns closer to the meltdowns and explosions. |

China banks seek new lending horizons as bad debts rise Posted: 31 Aug 2014 03:05 PM PDT By Engen Tham and Lawrence White SHANGHAI/HONG KONG (Reuters) - Grappling with a slowing economy, China's biggest banks are turning their back on mainstay borrowers like manufacturers and courting high growth industries such as healthcare, food and IT in a bid to boost revenue. The shift in focus by the state-owned lenders coincides with a spike in non-performing loans and slower profit growth as China's vast factory sector flounders. China's biggest bank, the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China , also said 80 percent of new non-performing loans in the second quarter came from manufacturing and wholesale. The Agricultural Bank of China , for example, said it had cut loans to customers in steel making and ship building by almost 39 billion yuan ($6.4 billion). |
