Russia threatens to force fly-around for airlines Posted: 05 Aug 2014 12:04 PM PDT Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev threatened on Tuesday to retaliate for the grounding of a subsidiary of national airline Aeroflot because of EU sanctions, with one newspaper reporting that European flights to Asia over Siberia could be banned. Low-cost carrier Dobrolyot, operated by Aeroflot, suspended all flights last week after its airline leasing agreement was cancelled under European Union sanctions because it flies to Crimea, a region Russia annexed from Ukraine in March. |

A tale of two shelters: Israelis and Palestinians united in fear Posted: 05 Aug 2014 10:04 AM PDT By Nidal al-Mughrabi and Maayan Lubell GAZA/ASHKELON Israel (Reuters) - Ramadan Subuh surveyed the packed Gaza school where he and some 2,500 other Palestinians have been sheltering and lamented the plight of civilians who have struggled to survive nearly four weeks of Israeli bombardment. "A life of humiliation - this how we live," said Subuh, 42, whose family of 12 fled to the U.N.-run Al-Fakhoura school from Beit Lahiya, a town in the northern Gaza Strip devastated by the fighting. No place in Gaza is safe, and everyone is taking his own chance," he said. Some 260,000 of the Gaza Strip's population of 1.8 million have taken refuge in schools and other institutions run by the United Nations. |
Civilians killed in Ukraine as U.N. warns of mass exodus Posted: 05 Aug 2014 04:26 PM PDT At least two civilians were killed in heavy clashes on the outskirts of the main rebel-held bastion of Donetsk in east Ukraine on Tuesday, as the UN warned of a "massive exodus and destruction" if fighting intensified. Powerful explosions rocked the western Petrovksy suburb of the sprawling million-strong city, the local administration said, as government forces pushed on with an offensive to oust insurgents. Ukraine's military called on insurgents in Donetsk, Lugansk and another frontline city, Gorlivka, on Monday to open corridors for several hours each day to allow civilians to escape. |

One Russian's heartfelt protest against US sanctions Posted: 05 Aug 2014 07:06 AM PDT A confused Russian citizen reacted to recent international sanctions against Russia by deciding to give up American products. In a video message for Barack Obama he begins by pouring out a bottle of Coca-Cola. But then he realises that his smartphone and tablet are also American-made. Watch as he smashes his iPhone and iPad with a hammer before turning his attention to the very camera that he's using to record the video. Credit: Mikhail Samarsky |

Armed police escort man off Qatar Airways plane at UK airport Posted: 05 Aug 2014 06:58 AM PDT By Andrew Yates MANCHESTER England (Reuters) - Britain scrambled two fighter jets on Tuesday to escort a Qatar Airways plane into Manchester airport after the pilot reported a possible explosive device on board. A passenger was later arrested on suspicion of making a hoax bomb threat. Qatar Airways said the Airbus A330-300 plane was flight QR23 from Doha to Manchester with 269 passengers and 13 crew on board. A Reuters photographer saw armed police remove a handcuffed male passenger dressed in baggy trousers and a sports shirt from the plane. "We can confirm that Typhoon aircraft were launched from RAF Coningsby in their quick reaction alert role this afternoon to investigate a civilian aircraft whose pilot had requested assistance," Britain's Ministry of Defence said in a statement. |

Experimental drug may be Ebola silver bullet Posted: 04 Aug 2014 03:56 PM PDT Hopes of finding a treatment for the deadly Ebola virus shifted on Monday to a small California-based biotech company whose experimental drug has been used to treat two American missionary workers. The drug, developed by Mapp Biopharmaceutical Inc, was used to treat two aid workers, one from the Samaritan's Purse group and the other from Christian mission group SIM USA, who were exposed to the disease in Liberia, according to a U.S. government health official. The Samaritan Purse aid worker, Dr Kent Brantly, returned to the United States on Saturday for medical care, and his colleague Nancy Writebol of SIM USA is due to fly back via medical aircraft on Tuesday. Samaritan's Purse said both the aid workers received the experimental treatment while in Liberia. |
China earthquake death toll passes 400 Posted: 05 Aug 2014 10:00 AM PDT The death toll had risen to 410, authorities in the southwestern province of Yunnan said in a statement, as concerns mounted over a barrier lake formed by a landslide blocking a river in the disaster zone. The magnitude 6.1 tremor destroyed 80,000 houses and seriously damaged 124,000 more, wrecking the once-idyllic mountainside village of Longtoushan, where residents confronted their losses. "We have no money and I don't know what we are going to do." Li Shanyan, 35, watched anxiously as emergency personnel dug through the debris of her home, searching for her 71-year-old aunt. "(The rescuers) dug for a whole day and couldn't find her." Like many in poverty-stricken Longtoushan, the crudely-made house is built from yellow earth, with a tiled roof. |
