Deadly anti-Charlie Hebdo riots as France defends free speech Posted: 17 Jan 2015 03:02 PM PST Five people were killed and churches set on fire in Niger on Saturday in fresh protests against the French weekly Charlie Hebdo's Mohammed cover, as France condemned the violence and defended freedom of expression. With France still reeling from last week's attacks that claimed 17 lives, jittery European countries stepped up security, with soldiers patrolling the streets of Belgium for the first time in 35 years. Around 1,000 youths wielding iron bars, clubs and axes rampaged through the Niger capital, hurling rocks at police who responded with tear gas. "In Niamey, the tally is five dead, all civilians," Niger's President Mahamadou Issoufou said in a speech broadcast on state television, as he appealed for calm. |
CBS suspends sports analyst Greg Anthony after his arrest Posted: 17 Jan 2015 10:57 AM PST CBS Sports basketball analyst Greg Anthony has been suspended indefinitely by the network, a CBS spokesperson said on Saturday, a day after he was arrested in Washington, D.C., on a charge of soliciting prostitution. "Greg Anthony will not be working again for CBS this season," the spokesperson said in an email. "I will work to regain the trust that I have lost, and the first step is saying that I am sorry." Anthony played 11 seasons in the National Basketball Association before joining CBS in 2008 as lead studio analyst for the network's college basketball coverage, according to his network biography. He had been scheduled to work CBS' broadcast of the Michigan State-Maryland basketball game in College Park, Maryland, on Saturday. |
Husband injures wife, kills man, self in Florida mall Posted: 17 Jan 2015 01:34 PM PST By Irene Klotz MELBOURNE, Fla. (Reuters) - A man armed with "several pockets full of ammunition" opened fire at a Florida shopping mall on Saturday, injuring his wife and killing another man before fatally shooting himself, police said. Investigators believe a domestic dispute triggered the shooting just as stores at Melbourne Square mall on Florida's east coast were preparing to open for the day, said Melbourne police commander Vince Pryce. Idanerys Garcia-Rodriguez, who appeared to be the target, was in good condition at a hospital Saturday afternoon, Pryce said. Pryce said reports that the unidentified man had tried to wrestle the gun away from Jose Garcia-Rodriguez were unconfirmed. |

France's Hollande defends freedom of speech after anti-Hebdo clashes abroad Posted: 17 Jan 2015 10:16 AM PST By Leigh Thomas PARIS (Reuters) - French President Francois Hollande said on Saturday that anti-Charlie Hebdo protesters in other countries do not understand France's attachment to freedom of speech. He was speaking a day after the satirical weekly's publication of a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammad sparked violent clashes, including deaths, in some Muslim countries. Demand has surged for Charlie Hebdo's first issue since two militant gunmen burst into its weekly editorial conference and shot dead 12 people at the start of three days of violence that shocked France. A cartoon image of Mohammad on its front page outraged many in the Muslim world, triggering demonstrations that turned violent in Algeria, Niger and Pakistan on Friday. |
