B.B. King recalled with love, humor at Mississippi funeral Posted: 30 May 2015 03:28 PM PDT INDIANOLA, Miss. (AP) — B.B. King's early life personified the blues: He was born to dirt-poor sharecroppers in the cotton country of the Mississippi Delta and left alone by the deaths of his mother and grandmother when he was a child. But he never let those circumstances hold him back or define him, a minister said Saturday at the funeral of the blues legend. |
Kerry, Zarif fail to make breakthrough in nuclear talks Posted: 30 May 2015 11:31 AM PDT Tehran rejected a key Western demand for site inspections Saturday and differences remained after US Secretary of State John Kerry and his Iranian counterpart held talks to secure a nuclear deal. With a deadline a month away, a senior Iranian negotiator said the Geneva talks between Kerry and Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif failed to bridge the differences between Tehran and world powers. "The differences are still there," Abbas Araghchi, deputy head of Iran's negotiating team, said at the end of the meeting. |
Rollback of U.S. spy powers would mark post-9/11 watershed Posted: 30 May 2015 12:19 PM PDT By Warren Strobel and Mark Hosenball WASHINGTON (Reuters) - At 3:59 p.m. EDT on Sunday, the National Security Agency and telecommunications companies will begin mothballing a once-secret system that collected Americans' bulk telephone records, shutting down computers and sealing off warehouses of digital data. If the U.S. Congress fails to act, key provisions of the USA Patriot Act will lapse in a watershed moment in the post-Sept. 11, 2001, era. Intrusive government powers, created and wielded in the name of preventing another mass-casualty terrorist attack, would be at least partly scaled back, proponents and critics of the surveillance say. |

Tom Perry, the oldest member of the faith's highest governing body and who spoke against same-sex marriage, died from cancer on Saturday at age 92, the church said. Perry, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, died at his home in Salt Lake City, Utah, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said in a statement. Perry was present when Utah lawmakers and Mormon leaders introduced a landmark bill in March barring discrimination against gays and transgender people while protecting the rights of religious groups and individuals. |
More flooding in Texas after storms, death toll hits 23 Posted: 30 May 2015 03:56 PM PDT By Lisa Maria Garza and Jim Forsyth DALLAS/SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) - Rain caused flooding on roads in parts of Texas on Saturday, an official said, after severe weather killed at least 23 people during the week and prompted U.S. President Barack Obama to declare a disaster in the state. Texas has endured record rainfall in May. This week, flooding turned streets into rivers, ripped homes off foundations, swept over thousands of vehicles and trapped people in cars and houses. Obama signed a disaster declaration late on Friday to free up federal funds to help rebuild areas of Texas slammed by the storms. |
