Surprise lead for Conservatives in UK election exit poll

Posted: 07 May 2015 04:25 PM PDT

An exit poll predicting that the Conservative Party led by Prime Minister David Cameron will be the largest party with 316 seats is projected onto BBC Broadcasting House, Portland Place in London on May 7, 2015Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservatives have defied expectations to win the most seats at Britain's general election while falling just short of the clear majority needed to govern alone, exit polls indicated Thursday. The centre-right Conservatives were projected to win 316 seats compared to 239 for Ed Miliband's centre-left Labour party, in a result that tore up pre-election predictions. Opinion polls had indicated for months that the Conservatives and Labour were virtually tied. If the results are borne out, they could put Britain on a collision course with the European Union as Cameron has promised an in-out referendum on membership.

NSA's phone spying program ruled illegal by appeals court

NSA Surveillance-Privacy ReportBy Jonathan Stempel NEW YORK (Reuters) - A U.S. spying program that systematically collects millions of Americans' phone records is illegal, a federal appeals court ruled on Thursday, putting pressure on Congress to quickly decide whether to replace or end the controversial anti-terrorism surveillance. Ruling on a program revealed by former government security contractor Edward Snowden, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan said the Patriot Act did not authorize the National Security Agency to collect Americans' calling records in bulk. Circuit Judge Gerard Lynch wrote for a three-judge panel that Section 215, which addresses the FBI's ability to gather business records, could not be interpreted to have permitted the NSA to collect a "staggering" amount of phone records, contrary to claims by the Bush and Obama administrations.

Polling Manager Scott Russel (R) and assistant Ross Clement deliver ballot boxes and a polling sign to a polling station on The Royal Mile in the centre of Edinburgh on May 6, 2015 on the eve of the General electionThe final polls released on the eve of Britain's general election on Thursday showed main rivals Labour and the Conservatives locked in a dead heat. Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservative party and the Labour party led by Ed Miliband have been neck-and-neck for much of the campaign. The last survey data released before a ban on the publishing of opinion polls comes into force indicated that a flurry of last-minute campaigning to win over undecided voters had failed to sway the race one way or another.
