Ex-NAACP activist Dolezal removed from police oversight panel in Washington state Posted: 18 Jun 2015 04:57 PM PDT SEATTLE (Reuters) - The city council in Washington state voted on Thursday to remove civil rights activist Rachel Dolezal, who drew national attention over her racial identity, from a police oversight commission over conduct violations, a Spokane city spokesman said. Six members of the Spokane City Council voted unanimously to remove Dolezal following a city probe that found she had publicly named citizens who made complaints against police officers, in violation of confidentiality rules, and had also engaged in workplace harassment, city spokesman Brian Coddington said. Three dead as Tropical Depression Bill lashes central U.S. states Posted: 18 Jun 2015 02:48 PM PDT By Heide Brandes OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) - Tropical Depression Bill pelted Oklahoma with heavy rains, triggering flooding that killed a 2-year-old toddler who was swept out of his father's arms by raging waters, officials said on Thursday. One person in neighboring Missouri was killed by flooding caused by rains from the storm hitting the region and a woman died in central Texas when she lost control of her car while driving through the storm, officials said. Bill, the second named tropical storm of the 2015 Atlantic hurricane season, is expected to dump between 2 to 4 inches (5 to 10 cm) of rain as it travels northeast through Arkansas and Missouri into West Virginia. |
New Jersey man charged with conspiracy to provide support to Islamic State Posted: 18 Jun 2015 02:35 PM PDT U.S. authorities on Thursday charged a New Jersey man with conspiring to support the militant group Islamic State, the fourth person arrested in recent days in and around New York City as part of a broader investigation. Samuel Rahamin Topaz, 21, of Fort Lee, New Jersey, was arrested at his home on Wednesday, the Justice Department said. According to a criminal complaint, he had communicated frequently with Munther Omar Saleh, a college student from Queens who was arrested on Saturday along with an unnamed co-conspirator when they ran at a surveillance vehicle. |
