Kerry says Iran vow to defy U.S. is 'very disturbing' Posted: 21 Jul 2015 02:32 AM PDT U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said a speech by Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on Saturday vowing to defy American policies in the region despite a deal with world powers over Tehran's nuclear program was "very disturbing". Ayatollah Khamenei told supporters on Saturday that U.S. policies in the region were "180 degrees" opposed to Iran's, at a speech in a Tehran mosque punctuated by chants of "Death to America" and "Death to Israel". "Even after this deal our policy toward the arrogant U.S. will not change," Khamenei said. |
U.S. appeals court vacates some convictions of former Illinois Governor Blagojevich Posted: 21 Jul 2015 04:31 PM PDT A U.S. appeals court on Tuesday vacated five out of 18 criminal convictions against former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, who is serving a 14-year sentence for attempted extortion from campaign contributors, wire fraud and other crimes. The judges vacated his sentence and ordered a retrial on the five counts, but said Blagojevich, 58, was not entitled to release from prison pending retrial because most convictions were upheld and the advisory sentencing range is above 14 years. An attorney for Blagojevich said he believed his client should pursue further appeals and Blagojevich's wife, Patti Blagojevich, told a news conference her husband is an innocent man who never intended to break the law. |
Tennessee suspect's family sees depression, shame behind rampage Posted: 21 Jul 2015 02:48 PM PDT Members of Mohammod Youssuf Abdulazeez's family believe deep depression and shame over an drunken driving charge may have led him to go on a rampage in which five U.S. servicemen died last week, a source close to the family said on Tuesday. Two days before the Chattanooga attack, Abdulazeez told his family he was going to work, the source said, but they learned from his friends that he instead took a marijuana and alcohol-fueled "joy ride" in a rented car. The trigger for his "bender" was the worsening of depression that had dogged him for years, the family believes. |
Facebook must hand over New York users' info to prosecutors, court rules Posted: 21 Jul 2015 12:47 PM PDT Facebook Inc cannot challenge search warrants New York prosecutors used to get information from its site on hundreds of users suspected of Social Security fraud, a state appeals court said on Tuesday, in a decision likely making it harder for New Yorkers to keep their digital lives private. The warrants, which applied to 381 users' photos, private messages and other account information, could only be challenged by individual defendants after prosecutors gathered evidence, the Manhattan-based court unanimously ruled. Facebook was backed in the case by a group of large Internet companies including Google Inc and Microsoft Corp, which argued the case could set a troubling precedent giving prosecutors access to all kinds of digital information. |
