Fear, mistrust linger in Ferguson despite reform efforts by police Posted: 08 Aug 2015 11:36 AM PDT The scene outside the Ferguson Police Department in Missouri on Friday night was familiar: A crowd of 300 protesters, angry over last year's fatal police shooting of an unarmed black teen, went toe-to-toe with a line of officers, screaming profanities. "They were in our face, but we didn't react," said Ferguson police Sergeant Dominica Fuller, clad for Friday night's police work in a polo shirt bearing the phrase "community engagement team" rather than the body armor and riot helmets common in the unrest following the death of 18-year-old Michael Brown on Aug. 9, 2014. "Our job now is to listen," said Fuller, one of five black officers on the 50-member police force who in May became the city's first black female police sergeant. |
Colorado gunman gets life sentence for killing 12 in movie rampage Posted: 07 Aug 2015 07:13 PM PDT By Keith Coffman CENTENNIAL, Colo. (Reuters) - A Colorado jury sentenced movie rampage gunman James Holmes to life without parole on Friday, rejecting the death penalty for the 27-year-old who entered a midnight screening of a Batman film wielding a semi-automatic rifle, shotgun and pistol and killed a dozen people. After less than a day of deliberations, and in a surprise to many legal experts and those in the packed courtroom, the jurors said they were unable to reach a unanimous decision condemning Holmes to execution. Holmes showed no reaction. |
Pennsylvania's top prosecutor arraigned, no plea entered Posted: 08 Aug 2015 12:13 PM PDT Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane appeared before a magisterial district judge on Saturday via video conference to face charges including criminal obstruction relating to a leak about a rival. Kane, 49, who in 2012 became the first woman and first Democrat elected as the state's top prosecutor, has vowed to fight the charges, though she would have to step down if convicted. Kane did not enter a plea in the proceedings, which lasted about five minutes, and was released on an unsecured $10,000 bail by Judge Cathleen Kelly Rebar. |

Trump's rivals criticize comment about female moderator Posted: 08 Aug 2015 04:07 PM PDT ATLANTA (AP) — Donald Trump's bombast continued to roil the Republican presidential race Saturday as several rivals criticized his treatment of a Fox News debate moderator. The organizer of a conservative political convention rescinded the businessman's prime-time speaking slot, angering those eager to hear from the businessman. |
Trump dumped from conservative event in Atlanta over 'inappropriate' comments Posted: 07 Aug 2015 10:39 PM PDT By Steve Holland WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was dumped from a prime speaking role to an important gathering of conservative activists on Friday for his criticism of Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly after a combustible debate performance. Trump was scheduled to deliver the keynote address on Saturday night at a conference in Atlanta organized by Red State, an influential conservative group. Red State chief Erick Erickson said he had disinvited Trump from the event because of what he described as "demeaning" remarks about Kelly who was one of three moderators during the first major Republican debate on Thursday night in Cleveland. |
