U.S. clerk jailed for gay marriage defiance; dispute goes on Posted: 03 Sep 2015 03:33 PM PDT A Kentucky county clerk was jailed on Thursday for refusing to issue marriage licenses to gay couples, and a full day of court hearings failed to put an end to her two-month-old legal fight over a U.S. Supreme Court ruling upholding same-sex marriage. U.S. District Judge David Bunning found Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis in contempt then elicited a pledge from five of her six deputies to issue the licenses. The 49-year-old woman, who has emerged as a darling of social conservatives, has refused to issue licenses to any couples, gay or straight, since the U.S. Supreme Court in June ruled that same-sex couples have the right to marry under the U.S. Constitution, citing her beliefs as an Apostolic Christian. |
South Carolina to seek death penalty in Charleston church massacre Posted: 03 Sep 2015 01:55 PM PDT South Carolina will seek the death penalty for Dylann Roof, who is charged with the June murders of nine black worshippers at a Charleston church, a state prosecutor said on Thursday. The 21-year-old Roof, who is white, has been accused of gunning down his victims, members of a Bible study group at Charleston's Emanuel AME Church, because it was a nationally known historically black church. "This was the ultimate crime and justice from our state calls for the ultimate punishment," Ninth Judicial Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson said at a news conference. |
Security video may provide lead in Illinois policeman's slaying Posted: 03 Sep 2015 02:37 PM PDT Authorities in northern Illinois turned to a home security video on Thursday for possible clues about three suspects in the fatal shooting of a veteran policeman as hundreds of officers searched across the region for a third day. The video, turned in Wednesday night by a Fox Lake homeowner from near where the shooting occurred, was being processed by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Lake County Major Crime Task Force Commander George Filenko told a news conference. Filenko said the task force expected results back from the video as soon as Thursday evening. |

Kentucky clerk unlikely star in fight against gay marriage Posted: 02 Sep 2015 06:05 PM PDT Fans of Kim Davis have rallied around the Kentucky clerk while foes have lined up in protest since she touted her religious beliefs in defiance of a court order to issue same-sex marriage licenses. From the overwhelmed florist in Morehead, Kentucky, delivering bouquets to her nearby office, to a fellow county clerk biking across the state to show solidarity, to a Republican presidential candidate calling hers a fight against tyranny, many are standing with her. This week the U.S. Supreme Court declined to grant Davis a stay on a federal judge's injunction that would force her to issue marriage licenses to all comers. |
