Democrat Webb weighing possible independent bid for White House Posted: 19 Oct 2015 04:05 PM PDT Democratic presidential candidate Jim Webb is considering an independent bid for the White House, and will hold a news conference about his candidacy on Tuesday, his campaign said on Monday. Webb, a former U.S. senator from Virginia, has lagged behind front-runner Hillary Clinton and her chief rival, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, in opinion polls, along with former Maryland Governor Marin O'Malley and former Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chaffee. Webb's campaign announced the news conference at the National Press Club in Washington with a short statement headlined "Jim Webb To Consider Independent Run." In addition to his candidacy, Webb will discuss "the campaign and his views of the political parties in the current (2016) election cycle," the statement said. |

U.S. appeals court upholds core of N.Y., Connecticut gun laws Posted: 19 Oct 2015 12:45 PM PDT A federal appeals court on Monday upheld parts of New York and Connecticut gun control laws banning semiautomatic assault rifles and large-capacity magazines, ruling the measures passed after a 2012 school massacre did not violate the Constitution. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York upheld the bans on semiautomatic weapons and large-capacity magazines, but struck down a New York provision barring gun owners from loading more than seven bullets in a clip and a Connecticut prohibition on the non-semiautomatic Remington 7615. |
U.S. announces task force to develop drone registry Posted: 19 Oct 2015 02:45 PM PDT The Obama administration said on Monday that it would require drone owners to register their unmanned aircraft as part of an effort to curtail rogue drone flights that pose a danger to commercial aircraft and crowded public venues. U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx announced the creation of a task force of private sector and government representatives to craft recommendations for establishing the first ever federal drone registry. The recommendations are due by Nov. 20, and administration officials hope to have the registry in place before Christmas, when they say that more than 1 million new drones could be given as gifts to new untrained operators. |
Texas defunds Planned Parenthood clinics, but Louisiana ordered to pay Posted: 19 Oct 2015 12:12 PM PDT By Lisa Maria Garza and Andy Grimm DALLAS/NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - Texas on Monday barred Planned Parenthood from receiving state Medicaid money, the latest setback for the women's healthcare provider since it became embroiled in controversy over undercover videos about its handling of fetal tissue. Hours earlier in neighboring Louisiana, a federal judge blocked that state's efforts to cut the group's funding. In a letter to Planned Parenthood clinics statewide, Texas health officials said all funding from Medicaid, the government healthcare program for the poor, was being cut because of what it characterized as program violations captured on the videos. |
