The death toll may still climb at the club, which hosted a rock concert attended by up to 400, Deputy Interior Minister Raed Arafat said. Deputy Prime Minister Gabriel Oprea said an investigation into the causes of the incident was already underway. |

Two dead as torrential rains, tornadoes lash central Texas Posted: 30 Oct 2015 03:48 PM PDT At least two people were killed when a storm with high winds and heavy rains pelted central Texas on Friday, flooding highways, causing evacuations after rivers overflowed and spawning tornadoes that ripped through buildings outside San Antonio. The body of one man swept away by raging waters when his vehicle was caught southeast of Austin has been recovered, a Travis County emergency official said, adding one elderly woman was still missing. Near San Antonio, U.S. Army officials said the body of an individual, who was washed downstream when a vehicle was picked up by fast moving flood waters, was found on Friday afternoon on Camp Bullis. |
One killed in partial building collapse in New York Posted: 30 Oct 2015 12:12 PM PDT By Laila Kearney NEW YORK (Reuters) - A building undergoing demolition in New York partially collapsed on Friday, killing one construction worker and temporarily trapping another in the rubble, authorities said. Some 65 firefighters responded to the collapse, which occurred at about 10:30 a.m. in the rear of a multistory building on West 38th Street in midtown Manhattan, a fire department spokesman said. After three hours of digging, firefighters wielding pickaxes and saws freed the trapped man. |
Mass release of U.S. prisoners spells deportation for hundreds Posted: 30 Oct 2015 01:10 PM PDT Almost a third of 6,000 federal prisoners scheduled to be freed between Friday and Tuesday, part of a push to reduce America's soaring incarceration rate, will immediately be turned over to U.S. immigration authorities for deportation proceedings. While this weekend will be a happy occasion for the thousands of inmates who are U.S. citizens and will reunite with their families, many of the roughly 1,780 foreign inmates to be put on the deportation track will leave family members behind in the United States. Despite Obama administration assurances that the transfer of ex-convicts into the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is a routine occurrence, immigrant advocates worry they may not receive due process as they leave. |
