FBI unlocks iPhone of attacker, ending Apple battle Posted: 28 Mar 2016 04:25 PM PDT The FBI has unlocked the iPhone used by one of the San Bernardino attackers, officials said Monday, ending a heated legal standoff with Apple that had pitted US authorities against Silicon Valley. Apple, backed by a broad coalition of technology giants like Google and Facebook, was fiercely opposed to assisting the US government in unlocking the iPhone on grounds it would have wide-reaching implications on digital security and privacy. A key court hearing scheduled earlier this month to hear arguments from both sides in the sensitive case was abruptly cancelled after the FBI said it no longer needed Apple's help and had found an outside party to unlock the phone. |

Belgium releases sole suspect charged over Brussels attacks Posted: 28 Mar 2016 02:34 PM PDT Belgium on Monday freed the sole suspect charged over last week's Islamic State attacks in Brussels that left 35 dead, raising fresh questions about the handling of the case by under-fire Belgian authorities. Prosecutors charged Faycal C. on Saturday with "terrorist murder" and were investigating whether he was a third airport attacker who fled after his bomb did not go off, but said there was now a lack of evidence. Police earlier Monday released new CCTV footage of a third suspect in the March 22 Zaventem airport attack, the so-called "man in the hat" seen with the two suicide bombers. |
Brussels toll rises to 35 as European hunt gathers pace Posted: 27 Mar 2016 05:16 PM PDT Belgium raised the death toll from the Brussels attacks to 35 and charged three terror suspects Monday as police across Europe stepped up efforts to unravel an Islamic State network linked to the carnage. Police released a new video of a third suspect in the March 22 Zaventem airport attack, the so-called "man in the hat" seen with two other suicide bombers, who escaped after his bomb failed to explode. Mourners were set to hold an Easter Monday church service in memory of the victims of the bombings at the airport and at Maalbeek metro station, Belgium's worst ever terror attack. |

Belgian police release video footage of third airport suspect Posted: 28 Mar 2016 03:35 AM PDT Belgian police on Monday released new video footage of the third suspect whose bomb failed to go off at Brussels airport in last week's attack. The footage shows the man wearing a hat and white jacket pushing a trolley with a large bag through the departure hall, next to suicide bombers Ibrahim El Bakraoui and Najim Laachraoui. "It's a new video which had not previously been released," a spokesman for the federal prosecutor's office told AFP. |
