Trump’s campaign chief ducks questions about ties to Russian billionaire Posted: 26 Apr 2016 02:40 PM PDT Paul Manafort on "Meet the Press" earlier this month. A court in the Cayman Islands has sought to question Paul Manafort, Donald Trump's chief campaign aide, to determine what happened to $26.2 million invested by a billionaire Russian oligarch in a Cayman Islands partnership with the political consultant, according to documents obtained by Yahoo News. Court-appointed liquidators from the Cayman Islands last summer initiated a legal action in federal court in Alexandria, Va., seeking to question Manafort and two business partners under oath about a business deal between them and firms controlled by Oleg Deripaska, a Russian aluminum magnate who for years was barred from entering the United States over allegations of ties to organized crime. |
After Tuesday, will Bernie Sanders’ tone pave way for concession? Posted: 26 Apr 2016 04:51 AM PDT Polls suggest that Sen. Bernie Sanders is poised to lose Maryland and Pennsylvania in key races Tuesday, raising questions about whether the progressive candidate — who continues to raise millions of dollars from his passionate supporters — will adopt a more unifying tone as his chances for the Democratic nomination fade. During last week's New York primary, Sanders sounded a defiant note as he lost the delegate-rich state, fiercely criticizing rival Hillary Clinton in an hourlong speech at Penn State University. By Sunday, however, Sanders was already striking a more conciliatory note. |
Posted: 26 Apr 2016 03:09 PM PDT Activist, DeRay McKesson is running for mayor of Baltimore. BALTIMORE — There was one moment during protests in Ferguson, Missouri, when DeRay Mckesson says he feared a casual gesture might cost him life. According to Mckesson, the incident occurred in the first few days of the demonstrations that engulfed the city following the August 9, 2014 shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown by a Ferguson cop. |
Prince too weak to walk off plane after emergency landing; bodyguard carried him, records reveal Posted: 26 Apr 2016 10:39 AM PDT A week before his unexpected death, Prince was so weak that his bodyguard had to carry him off a private jet when the aircraft made an emergency landing in the middle of the night in western Illinois, according to fire and ambulance records released Tuesday. |
Trump hits 50 percent in national GOP poll for the first time Posted: 26 Apr 2016 09:12 AM PDT While Republican frontrunner Donald Trump still needs more than 300 delegates to reach 1,237 — the magic number needed to secure the GOP presidential nomination — he has finally reached a key milestone in his bid for the White House: support from half of the country's likely Republican voters. According to a new NBC News/SurveyMonkey national tracking poll released Tuesday, 50 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents say they support the real estate mogul's candidacy, compared to the 26 percent who support Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and the 17 percent who are backing Ohio Gov. John Kasich. Trump's double-digit lead over his GOP rivals is one reason Cruz and Kasich banded together this week in an effort to block the brash billionaire from winning the GOP nomination. |
Hillary Clinton: Half of my Cabinet will be women Posted: 26 Apr 2016 07:24 AM PDT Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton says that if she's elected president, at least half of her Cabinet will be women. During a town hall hosted by MSNBC on Monday night, host Rachel Maddow asked Clinton whether she would match a campaign promise Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made good on earlier this year. "He promised when he took office that he would have a Cabinet that was 50 percent women, and then he did it," Maddow said. |

Thirty years on, Ukraine mourns victims of Chernobyl Posted: 26 Apr 2016 04:48 PM PDT Ukrainians held candlelit vigils Tuesday to mark 30 years since the world's worst nuclear accident at Chernobyl spewed radiation across Europe and left several thousand people dead or dying. Church bells rang and mourners laid flowers at Chernobyl's memorial square as the clock turned 1:23 am -- the moment the plant's reactor number four exploded and changed the fate of a generation living across the former Soviet Union. At least 30 people were killed on site and several thousand more are feared to have died from radiation in what Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said "appears to have been the world's largest man-made catastrophe". |

Canadian executed by Islamic militants in Philippines: Trudeau Posted: 25 Apr 2016 02:18 PM PDT Islamic militants in the Philippines have executed a Canadian hostage, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Monday, after the Filipino authorities said they had found the head of a foreign man on a remote island. "I'm outraged by the news that a Canadian citizen, John Ridsdel, held hostage in the Philippines since September 21, 2015, has been killed at the hands of his captors," Trudeau said. Ridsdel, fellow Canadian tourist Robert Hall, Hall's girlfriend Filipina Marites Flor, and Norwegian resort manager Kjartan Sekkingstad were kidnapped seven months ago from yachts at a marina near the major city of Davao, more than 500 kilometers (300 miles) from Jolo. |
