What Obama should do on torture Posted: 26 May 2016 02:00 AM PDT Like a lot of two-term presidents nearing the last bend in the road, Barack Obama seems guided by equal parts conviction and whimsy these days, without much regard for political consequence. The president has expounded publicly on race and political civility, shaken hands with a Cuban Castro, commuted a slew of sentences for drug offenders, plunged the federal government into the debate over transgender Americans in restrooms. Obama clearly isn't going to declassify the full text of the Senate's mammoth, landmark report on torture, and maybe that's the right call — I don't know. |

'Game on': Donald Trump, Bernie Sanders say they're willing to debate each other Posted: 26 May 2016 07:43 AM PDT Dust off the lawn chairs and get the popcorn ready: Donald Trump says he's willing to debate Bernie Sanders before the June 7 California primary. During a Wednesday night appearance on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" Trump said he would accept the Vermont senator's challenge to a one-on-one debate as long money raised for the event goes to charity. Trump is the presumptive GOP nominee and Sanders is facing increasingly daunting odds in the Democratic primary. |
Paul Ryan ally doubts speaker will ever fully endorse Trump Posted: 25 May 2016 08:40 AM PDT He has been called an "intellectual prodigy" and is one of the most influential thinkers and writers in conservative Republican politics. Yuval Levin, founding editor of National Affairs magazine, is also an informal adviser to House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., the most prominent Republican national leader to decline — at least so far — to endorse presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump. Levin also worked as a White House policy adviser to former President George W. Bush and has since been part of a movement within Republican politics to move the party toward a solutions-oriented disposition, in contrast to many in the party whose main goal has been to block the agenda of President Obama and the Democrats. |

‘American Sniper’ Chris Kyle exaggerated medal count, records reveal Posted: 25 May 2016 02:50 PM PDT Newly published documents reveal that "American Sniper" Chris Kyle was not part of the elite group of U.S. fighters to earn one of the nation's top three combat medals on more than one occasion during the global war on terrorism, as he claimed in his bestselling autobiography. Kyle, a former Navy SEAL who was murdered by a disturbed fellow veteran in 2013, wrote that he had received two Silver Stars and five Bronze Stars. The Silver Star, the third-highest combat decoration, is awarded for gallantry in action. |
