Improperly stored raw meat among violations found at Trump's Mar-a-Lago Posted: 13 Apr 2017 12:15 PM PDT By Bernie Woodall FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Reuters) - Undercooled meat, potentially dangerous raw fish and broken coolers were among 13 violations found by restaurant inspectors at Mar-a-Lago, the exclusive Florida resort owned by President Donald Trump, during visits in late January, state officials said on Thursday. Mar-a-Lago representatives did not respond to requests for comment on the problems discovered at the private club, which charges $200,000 in initiation fees and has been dubbed the Southern White House. This weekend, Trump is due to make his seventh trip as the 45th president of the United States to the Palm Beach property that he purchased in 1985. |

This new bill would legalize weed in Canada Posted: 13 Apr 2017 02:06 PM PDT Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is trying to change the maple leaf at the center of his nation's flag into a pot leaf. That's not true. Although you could see how it might happen? There's a leaf there already? Anyway, for real, Trudeau's march to legal recreational weed has officially begun. SEE ALSO: Colorado town caters to the lazy with its first drive-thru pot shop The prime minister revealed legislation on Thursday that would make it legal to recreationally smoke marijuana across Canada. There are roughly one bajillion details to figure out before Canadians will be able to purchase weed and smoke up just like people buy alcohol and drink, but this is where it starts. If successful, Canada and Uruguay would be the only countries to completely legalize recreational pot as a consumer product across their nations. Others have decriminalized it or effectively stopped enforcing laws against it. There's still a lot to do: the bill needs to become law; each province has to figure out how people will go about buying marijuana; and marketing regulations will have to be standardized. A number of questions will need to be answered, including how the advertising will work. Will it be sold like cigarettes or like alcohol or neither? Plus people are probably going to get too high to drive but will drive anyway, so the government will have to figure out how to test drivers the same way breathalyzers test blood-alcohol content. Provinces will also have to set prices and purchasing age minimums (the federal minimum will be 18, though provinces can make it higher) and government officials will have to figure out how to comply with drug treaties that they may or may not violate with legalization. So the Canadian government's got a few things to figure out. But the bill is expected to pass, meaning soon most Canadians over the age of 18 will be able to buy weed, and households will be able to grow up to four plants. Now see if United States President Donald Trump doesn't have to build another border wall just to keep people in. WATCH: Trump is president, but at least you can get high in four more states |
Pope makes Easter visit to fortress prison holding ex-mafiosi Posted: 13 Apr 2017 10:58 AM PDT By Philip Pullella ROME (Reuters) - Pope Francis visited a fortress prison holding mafia turncoats on Thursday and again included a Muslim and women in a traditional Holy Week foot-washing ritual that previous popes had limited to Catholic men. Francis said a Mass for the 70 inmates of the prison, a 16th century fortress at Paliano 75 km (47 miles) south of Rome. During the service, he bent to wash and kiss the right foot of 12 inmates, commemorating Jesus' gesture of humility towards his 12 apostles on the night before he died. |

US boy, 8, on joy ride for a cheeseburger Posted: 12 Apr 2017 07:03 PM PDT Talk about a craving: an eight-year-old American boy drove his father's van to a McDonald's because he just had to have a cheeseburger. The Ohio boy said he learned to drive by watching YouTube videos, the Weirton Daily Times reported on Sunday evening's adventure. The child, at the wheel with his four-year-old sister riding shotgun, drove for about a mile and a half, stopping at red lights and letting traffic pass before he executed a left turn into the McDonald's in the town of East Palestine in eastern Ohio, the paper said. |
U.S.-backed forces launch new attacks on Islamic State in Syria: statement Posted: 13 Apr 2017 03:25 AM PDT U.S.-backed forces fighting Islamic State in Syria launched a new phase of their offensive on Thursday, a statement said, but they have not yet begun to attack the militant group's stronghold of Raqqa city in an apparent delay in the operation. The multi-phased campaign by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), an alliance made up of Syrian Kurdish and Arab fighting groups, was launched in November and aims ultimately to drive the jihadists from Raqqa, their de facto Syrian capital. Officials in the Kurdish YPG militia, a powerful component of the SDF, said last month that assaults on Raqqa city itself would start in early or mid-April. |

Canada unveils legislation to legalize cannabis Posted: 13 Apr 2017 01:33 PM PDT Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government unveiled legislation Thursday to fully legalize marijuana, making Canada only the second country to do so, after Uruguay. While medical marijuana use has been regulated in this country since 2001, cannabis remains a controlled substance. Its legalization and regulation for recreational use is expected in 2018, in time for Canada's national holiday on July 1. |
Uber just added a feature to protect you from creepy drivers Posted: 13 Apr 2017 01:09 PM PDT 2017 hasn't exactly been kind to Uber, and while the company and its CEO can't seem to get out of each others' way, day-to-day operations continue to march on. Today, the Uber apps gets an all-new feature that, unlike almost every tidbit of Uber news so far this year, might actually make its users pretty happy. Starting today, riders who summon an Uber to their location can specify their pick-up and drop-off points without using physical street addresses, in an effort to boost user privacy and cut back on the creepiness of letting a driver know where you live.
With the new location options, if you don't feel like having an Uber driver meet you at a specific address you can choose any cross-street, including pre-determined pick-up spots at most major intersections. It's essentially an easier, faster way to obfuscate your comings and goings from the random drivers who show up to give you a lift. It's worth noting that, if you really wanted to protect your privacy with the previous system, it has always been possible to physically move the pickup point on the Uber map, or simply choose a nearby address rather than your own. But as TechCrunch notes, Uber discovered that very few people were actually taking advantage of that option, and many desired an easier way to apply an additional layer of privacy. This new pickup option should go a long way to fulfilling that request. The update to add the feature should be rolling out to all US users shortly, with wider implementation expected later. |

Mexico to extradite accused gunman to U.S. for 'Fast and Furious' slaying Posted: 13 Apr 2017 02:20 PM PDT Mexico's government said on Thursday it planned to extradite the man accused of pulling the trigger in the 2010 killing of a U.S. Border Patrol agent in a case tied to the U.S. government's ill-fated "Fast and Furious" gun-running sting. Heraclio Osorio-Arellanes was arrested on Wednesday on the border of the northern Mexican states of Sinaloa and Chihuahua for the shooting of Border Patrol agent Brian Terry, according to the U.S. Marshal for Arizona. Identifying the suspect only as Heraclio "N", the Mexican attorney general's office said in a statement that following his capture by Mexican marines, steps were underway to initiate the process of his extradition to the United States. |

Killer whales toss boats like toys while hunting a sea lion Posted: 13 Apr 2017 12:01 PM PDT A couple of boaters found themselves directly in the middle of a pod of orca whales hunting a sea lion off of the coast of Bowyer Island in British Columbia, Canada. According to Viral Hog, the man filming the incident spotted a few whale watching boats and went to go check out the action. After observing the orcas from a distance for 30 minutes, things took a turn when a sea lion sought refuge under one of the boats. The orcas bashed the boats like toys in a bathtub while trying to hunt the sea lion. The boaters were fearful that they would harm the animals with the propellers on their boats if they tried to get away, so the boats stayed put until a guide on the whale watching boat suggested that they move closer to the island so the sea lion could get to safety. Thankfully for the sea lion, the tactic worked. "The sea lion was safe in the end, though clearly a little injured," the boater told Viral Hog. |
Sessions announces revamp of immigration law system. Will it help? Posted: 13 Apr 2017 12:21 PM PDT While President Trump's promises to crackdown on illegal immigration have put his administration at odds with immigrants and their advocates, a new Justice Department policy could bring additional resources to an overtaxed legal system burdened with a backlog of cases. At a Tuesday visit to the US-Mexico border, Attorney General Jeff Sessions called for a revamping of the immigration law system, including an $80-million plan that would add 75 additional teams of judges to immigration court system. Today, the average detainee might wait 677 days for a hearing, leading officials to go around the court system in some cases, opting to expedite the deportation and send immigrants back to their countries of origin without a day in court. |
Philippines' Duterte cancels visit to disputed South China Sea island Posted: 12 Apr 2017 07:01 PM PDT Philippines' President Rodrigo Duterte has canceled a planned visit to an island the Philippines claims in the disputed South China Sea, after Beijing warned him against the visit. The brash Philippine leader last week announced his plan to raise the Philippine flag in the island of Thitu and fortify it with barracks, setting off alarm bells. "Because of our friendship with China and because we value your friendship I will not go there to raise the Philippine flag," Duterte said in a speech before the Filipino community in Riyadh late Wednesday. |

JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup profits up; Wells Fargo flat Posted: 13 Apr 2017 06:52 AM PDT Strong trading results in the first quarter drove profits higher at JPMorgan Chase and Citigroup, which also got a boost from a decline in funds set aside for bad energy loans, the banks reported Thursday. "The momentum we saw across many of our businesses towards the end of last year carried into the first quarter, resulting in significantly better overall performance than a year ago," Citigroup chief executive Michael Corbat said. |

Nintendo Switch battery case could be the system’s first must-have accessory Posted: 13 Apr 2017 04:28 PM PDT As massive of an improvement as the Nintendo Switch is over the Wii U, it still has its share of issues. The battery only lasts a few hours, the kickstand is flimsy and the charging port is positioned at the bottom of the tablet, making it impossible to charge while playing in tabletop mode. None of these issues are deal-breakers for most Switch owners, but they do hinder what could be the best portable consoles on the market. Thankfully, someone has decided to solve all of these problems (and more) with one simple accessory.
InDemand Design's SwitchCharge is a battery case for the Nintendo Switch expected to ship in August. The creators are currently raising money for the case on Indiegogo, where over 1,800 backers have already more than doubled the $80,000 goal. With 23 days left, the campaign is primed to be a huge success. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQULgVJocMo The primary feature of the SwitchCharge case is its 12,000mAh battery, which should give Switch owners up to 12 hours of uninterrupted game time. The case is also equipped with a sturdy, adjustable kickstand, 2 game card storage slots, quick charge technology and a USB-C port on the side (perfect for tabletop mode). InDemand Design is asking for $85 for a SwitchCharge case and power supply, but you can save a few dollars by purchasing a set of multiple cases. The company plans to begin shipping SwitchCharge cases in July, with deliveries expected to arrive in August. As this is an unreleased project, we can't say whether or not it does everything it claims to do, but it looks like it could be the ultimate all-in-one accessory for the Switch. |
Exposure to Pesticides May Increase Risk of Liver Cancer Posted: 13 Apr 2017 04:43 PM PDT People who are exposed to pesticides may face an increased risk of liver cancer, a new meta-analysis suggests. Pesticide exposure was associated with a 71 percent increased risk of liver cancer, according to the meta-analysis, which was presented on April 3 at the American Association for Cancer Research's annual meeting in Washington, D.C. The findings have not yet been published in a peer-reviewed journal. Liver cancer is the sixth most common cancer in the world, and the No. 2 cause of cancer deaths (behind lung cancer), said lead study author Hamdi Abdi, a cancer research fellow at the National Cancer Institute. |
CIA chief calls WikiLeaks a 'hostile intelligence service' Posted: 13 Apr 2017 04:24 PM PDT CIA Director Mike Pompeo on Thursday called WikiLeaks a "hostile intelligence service," using his first public speech as spy agency chief to denounce leakers who have plagued U.S. intelligence. "It is time to call out WikiLeaks for what it really is, a non-state hostile intelligence service often abetted by state actors like Russia," Pompeo said. |

At Chinese border with North Korea, trade cools but few signs of strain Posted: 13 Apr 2017 01:56 AM PDT By Philip Wen and Joseph Campbell DANDONG, China (Reuters) - Despite heightened tension on the Korean peninsula and North Korea warning of a nuclear strike against any sign of U.S. aggression, there were few signs of strain on Thursday on the main border post between China and the reclusive nation. In Dandong, through which about three-quarters of China's trade with North Korea flows, long queues of trucks heading in both directions formed across the Friendship Bridge, despite what locals said was a relative lull due to the North's most important national holiday on Saturday marking the birth of founder president Kim Il Sung. China has signed up to wide-ranging United Nations sanctions designed at halting Pyongyang's nuclear and ballistic missile programs, and local traders told Reuters that blanket bans on key North Korean commodities exports like coal, iron ore powder and precious metals have dealt a blow to business. |
