Admiral John Richardson arrived at the US naval base in Yokosuka on the outskirts of Tokyo to meet bereaved relatives and officers who served on the USS Fitzgerald. "It's an intimate meeting, very solemn grieving with families, so we're not even taking photos," Commander Ron Flanders, press officer at the US Naval Forces in Japan, told AFP. |

Boeing, Airbus to battle it out at Paris Air Show Posted: 18 Jun 2017 08:58 PM PDT The aircraft industry descends on Paris for the world's biggest airshow Monday, which sees bitter rivals Boeing and Airbus battle for contracts as newcomers snap at the heels of the two giants. Single-aisle planes for short and medium distances are the hottest ticket in the world's civil aviation industry, with airline demand for models in the Airbus A320 family giving the European company an edge, for now, over its American opponent, which is racing to return in force to the mid-range segment. Boeing, meanwhile, is to showcase the 737 Max 9 model as its anti-Airbus weapon in a market segment where squeezing a few more seats into a narrow-body cabin while eking out increased fuel efficiency over greater ranges is key. |

Two days after Philando Castile was shot dead by a police officer during a traffic stop, the National Rifle Association issued a statement. Castile's death was "troubling", the group said, adding that it supported the right of law-abiding Americans to carry firearms, no matter their race. |

Otto Warmbier dead: Student was 'murdered' by North Korea, says John McCain Posted: 20 Jun 2017 02:09 PM PDT Following the death of Otto Warmbier – the American student detained for more than a year by the North Korean government – world leaders have called on the repressive state to release all those still detained in the country, with John McCain accusing the regime of "murder". Mr Warmbier, a 22-year-old college student, visited North Korea in January of 2016. "In the final year of his life, [Mr Warmbier] lived the nightmare in which the North Korean people have been trapped for 70 years: forced labor, mass starvation, systematic cruelty, torture, and murder," Senator McCain, a former prisoner of war, said. |

Teen slams hypocritical school dress code in the perfect senior quote Posted: 19 Jun 2017 03:12 PM PDT High school senior Tori DiPaolo is now a hero on Twitter for using her senior quote to fight sexism. DiPaolo's school, West Milford High in New Jersey, bans girls from wearing shoulder baring tops on most days, but the robes required for senior photos happen to show a whole lot of ... wait for it ... shoulder. Tori: 1Dress code: 0 pic.twitter.com/1HHgjg84AE — Tori (@tori_dipaolo) June 13, 2017 SEE ALSO: Rapper/philosopher T-Pain gives student a senior quote and it's glorious DiPaolo called attention to this blatant contradiction with a self-quote: "I'm sorry, did my shoulders distract you from reading this quote?" Let's just say Twitter was here for it. This is the best senior quote ever. You're a fucking iconic ass queen & I applaud the fuck out this shit FUCK IT UP QUEEN https://t.co/29vsd6JALw — Brittany PINNED (@LitLikeBrittt) June 17, 2017 You are an awesome young lady with the world at your fingertips. Never settle and don't let the system box you in. GL — Angel Valdez (@GiJoeValdez) June 16, 2017 yo Tori, this is hype a/f. I applaud this shit — Nik Latrone (@NikHasTricks) June 17, 2017 It really is the perfect quote coming from someone who describes themselves as infamous for fighting their school's dress code double standards. DiPaolo finds that her school unfairly applies the dress code to girls but not boys. "My school's dress code prohibits boys from wearing muscle shirts," DiPaolo told the Huffington Post. "But they do all the time and don't get in trouble yet, when my bra strap accidentally slips I have to miss class time to go change." A+ trolling, Tori. Calling out sexism with honors. WATCH: |

Trump to make announcement on any Comey tapes this week: White House Posted: 20 Jun 2017 11:50 AM PDT U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to make an announcement this week about the existence of any tapes of conversations between him and former FBI Director James Comey, the White House said on Tuesday. "The president has said that he will make an announcement on this. Spicer was responding to a question about whether there are tapes of the conversations with Comey, whom Trump fired last month, and whether they would be turned over to the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee, which is probing allegations of Russians meddling in the 2016 U.S. election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign. |
Armed Russian jet 'flies within 5 feet of American plane' over Baltic Sea Posted: 20 Jun 2017 07:57 AM PDT An armed Russian fighter jet flew within 5ft (1.5m) of a US plane in a "provocative" manoeuvre over the Baltic Sea, it has been reported. The Sukhoi Su-27 jet approached an American RC-135 reconnaissance plane "rapidly" and flew "erratically", according to officials quoted by Fox News. The US considers the incident, which took place some 25 miles north-west of Kaliningrad, an unsafe intercept. |

Qatar demands 'blockade' lifted before Gulf crisis talks Posted: 19 Jun 2017 06:49 AM PDT Qatar's foreign minister on Monday called on neighbouring states to lift their "blockade" of his country before Doha takes part in any negotiations on ending the Gulf diplomatic crisis. Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani called measures to isolate Qatar imposed by Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and others "an act of aggression", adding that lifting them was a "pre-condition" for talks. "We have to make it very clear for everyone, negotiations must be done in a civilised way and should have a solid basis and not under pressure or under blockade," the foreign minister told reporters in Doha. |

A look at Americans detained in North Korea in recent years Posted: 20 Jun 2017 01:59 AM PDT SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Otto Warmbier, an American college student who died days after being released from North Korea in a coma, was one of several U.S. citizens who have been imprisoned in the country in recent years over a variety of alleged crimes, including subversion, anti-state activities and spying. He's also a rare Western detainee who came out of the country in rough shape — the vast majority of Americans detained by the North have been released in relatively good condition. |
Design video explains almost every OnePlus 5 detail Posted: 19 Jun 2017 06:01 PM PDT With one day to go until one of the most exciting smartphones of the summer becomes official, there's not much that we don't know about it. And thanks to a new video that looks at OnePlus's reasoning for designing the OnePlus 5, we now know why the handset looks like the iPhone 7 Plus but not the iPhone 8. We also know that it's going to be more expensive than last year's OnePlus flagships.
Talking to The Verge about making the OnePlus 5, various execs explained that the company's main goal this year is to make a great camera, one that can rival the camera experience on iPhone or top Samsung devices. OnePlus apparently thought about equipping last year's OnePlus 3 with a dual camera, but the endeavor was too expensive. Or it was too expensive to inform the public why such a camera works. In the video below, you'll see OnePlus CEO Pete Lau thanking Apple for doing that last year. You're also going to see a bunch of OnePlus 5 prototypes that don't look like the iPhone 7 Plus, yet the one that does, was ultimately chosen. "It's a little difficult to make two cameras, two holes in the back not look ugly," OnePlus Simon Liu says in the video. Speaking of expensive decisions, Lau also told The Verge that it's interested in edge-to-edge screen designs. "But we don't currently have the resources or access to those displays," he said. That's why the phone will not look like the Galaxy S8 or the iPhone 8. Finally, the video also reveals that the OnePlus 5 will be more expensive than its predecessors. How much will it cost? We'll just have to wait until tomorrow to find out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onBiCn963XM |

Londoners hold vigil for Muslim terror attack victims Posted: 19 Jun 2017 05:11 PM PDT Londoners bearing flowers and messages of solidarity gathered Monday at the spot where a man ploughed a van into Muslims leaving prayers at a mosque, the fourth terror strike in Britain in four months. Eleven people were injured in the attack, which took place early Monday near Finsbury Park mosque, north London, raising fears of retaliation against Muslims after recent assaults by Islamic extremists. |
5 Surprising Ways to Get Most Value Out of Your Grill Posted: 20 Jun 2017 07:07 AM PDT Because of the relatively long cook time, you won't want to do this next to fast-cooking items such as burgers or hot dogs, but if you're cooking something for a longer period, bread works wonderfully on the grill. The beans may need a bit more cooking later, but this technique will do most of the cooking for you. If you're cooking something low and slow, you might just find that the beans are done and ready to use with a side dish when the main course is done, making a pairing like black beans and barbecued ribs work out perfectly. |
Georgia special election: Democrats bidding to humiliate Donald Trump in historic vote Posted: 19 Jun 2017 11:14 AM PDT As Jon Ossoff sprang into a campaign office on the eve of the most closely watched – and costliest – special election in history, there were few clues on the 30-year-old's face that he had been shaking hands and banging on doors all year. If he does emerge as the victor, it would be the first time a Democrat has won Georgia's 6th congressional district in four decades. The polite and humble former documentary filmmaker has been careful throughout his campaign – situated in the green suburbs north of Atlanta – to avoid being overly critical of Donald Trump. |

Reliable insider suggests the Galaxy Note 7 will launch sooner than we thought Posted: 19 Jun 2017 12:47 PM PDT After a series of reports said that Samsung intends to unveil the Galaxy Note 8 in late August or early September, around the IFA tech event in Berlin, Germany, a new leak says the phone will be out even sooner than that.
Chinese leaker of Weibo fame Ice Universe said on Monday that Samsung has already settled on the Galaxy Note 8's launch date. Apparently, the Galaxy Note 8 will be unveiled in New York City during the third week of August in New York City. If accurate, it means the Galaxy Note 8 will be unveiled anywhere between August 14th and August 20th, which would be up to two weeks earlier than the most recent estimates. Let's just hope that rushing to market to beat Apple's newest iPhone, a strategy that killed the Galaxy Note 7 last year, will work this time around. The same leaker posted on Twitter an image that shows an alleged screen protector for the handset, that indicates the Galaxy Note 8 will have an Infinity display with extremely thin bezels, just like the Galaxy S8 before it. The phone is also expected to share some of the Galaxy S8's specs, although it'll have a few unique features, including a dual lens camera and a built-in S Pen stylus. https://twitter.com/UniverseIce/status/875731253726556162 Before the Galaxy Note 8 arrives, Samsung will relaunch last year's failed Galaxy Note 7 as the Galaxy Note FE. The safe phablet will sport the same design and hardware as its predecessor. The only thing that's going to be changed is the battery. |
