Posted: 15 Dec 2017 07:41 PM PST The U.S. Marine Corps is arguably the best amphibious-warfare force in the world. The issue is that relentless overseas commitments have strained marine resources so badly that it can't conduct the other training that it needs to maintain its combat edge. A review of readiness data from 2014 to 2016 revealed that "Marine Corps units were unable to fully accomplish training for other amphibious operations priorities," according to the GAO report. |

U.S. judge to lift house arrest for former Trump campaign manager Manafort Posted: 15 Dec 2017 12:49 PM PST By Karen Freifeld WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. District Court judge on Friday said she would release former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort from house arrest once he meets certain conditions, expressing satisfaction that the $10 million he agreed to forfeit would be available if he ever failed to appear for court proceedings. In her order, Judge Amy Berman Jackson said to be released from home confinement, Manafort must execute documents agreeing to forfeit four properties, including two in New York, one in Alexandria, Virginia, and his Florida home. Manafort is charged with conspiring to launder money and failing to register as a foreign agent working on behalf of the government of Ukraine's former pro-Russia President Viktor Yanukovych. |

Fatah calls for protests against US VP Jerusalem visit Posted: 16 Dec 2017 05:22 AM PST Breaking with decades with US policy, President Donald Trump announced on December 6 his decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital and that he would move the US embassy to the city. The move has stirred global condemnation and sparked angry protests across Arab and Muslim countries, as well as deadly clashes in the occupied territories between Palestinians and Israeli forces. |

Hong Kong 'milkshake murderer' challenges life sentence Posted: 15 Dec 2017 02:42 AM PST American Nancy Kissel, dubbed the "milkshake murderer" for one of Hong Kong's most notorious crimes, was back in court Friday to challenge her life sentence for murdering her banker husband. Kissel lost an appeal in 2014 against a conviction for drugging her husband -- a senior executive at US bank Merrill Lynch -- with a sedative-laced strawberry drink before clubbing him to death with a lead ornament in their luxury home in the southern Chinese city. With bobbed hair and wearing glasses, she took copious notes throughout the judicial review hearing into her case at Hong Kong's High Court on Friday. |

South Africa's ANC aims to announce new leader on Sunday Posted: 15 Dec 2017 05:02 AM PST By Alexander Winning and Mfuneko Toyana JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC) expects to announce Jacob Zuma's successor as party leader on Sunday, a spokesman said, concluding a bruising leadership battle that threatens to tear it apart before a 2019 election. The race between Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, a former cabinet minister and ex-wife of President Zuma, the two frontrunners to replace Zuma, is too close to call. The stakes are high because the ANC's electoral dominance means whoever wins the party's top job is likely to become the next president of South Africa after the next national election. |

Trump on cusp of tax reform victory as wavering Republicans pledge support Posted: 15 Dec 2017 05:10 PM PST Senators Marco Rubio and Bob Corker had both expressed reservations about the landmark legislation, but they said they were now on board. Mr Corker, a Tennessee Republican who has feuded publicly with Donald Trump, said he would back the legislation despite concerns about the measure inflating the deficit. A Congressional Budget Office analysis of a version of the legislation found it would add some $1.4 trillion to the deficit, but supporters argue surging economic growth would offset that. |

There was no immediate indication of a tsunami, but authorities said they had issued a warning following the tremor, which struck a coastal region some 300 kilometres (190 miles) from the capital. Final Republican tax bill slashes U.S. corporate rate, voting next week Posted: 15 Dec 2017 05:17 PM PST By Amanda Becker and David Morgan WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Congressional Republicans on Friday unveiled the final version of their dramatic U.S. tax overhaul - debt-financed cuts for businesses, the wealthy and some middle-class Americans - and picked up crucial support from two wavering senators ahead of planned votes by lawmakers early next week. Passage of the biggest U.S. tax rewrite since 1986 would provide Republican lawmakers and President Donald Trump their first major legislative victory since he took office in January. Prospects for approval soared after Republican senators Marco Rubio and Bob Corker pledged support. |

Trump wraps up week with attacks on FBI and US immigrants: 'The worst people' Posted: 15 Dec 2017 11:10 AM PST The US president also made the false claim that foreign countries send the "worst of the worst" to America through the green card immigration lottery system. Having recently claimed the FBI's reputation is in "tatters", Trump launched his latest criticism following reports that former an FBI agent watered down director James Comey's statement – in the midst of the 2016 presidential election race – on Hillary Clinton's private email server and text messages. |

Islamic State: What happened to all the foreign fighters? Posted: 15 Dec 2017 06:39 PM PST An estimated 40,000 people traveled from around the world to take up arms for the Islamic State group as it occupied territory in Syria and Iraq and declared a caliphate in 2014. How many have gone elsewhere to fight?" said Seth Jones, director of the International Security and Defense Policy Center at the Rand Corporation. International counterterror groups are putting huge efforts into answering those questions, working hard to name, count and track IS foreign fighters. |
Catalan election to return hung parliament: poll Posted: 15 Dec 2017 04:37 AM PST By Sonya Dowsett MADRID (Reuters) - An election in Catalonia will fail to conclusively resolve a political crisis over an independence drive in the region, the final surveys before the Dec. 21 vote showed on Friday. The ballot will result in a hung parliament, a Metroscopia poll showed, with parties favoring unity with Spain tipped to gain a maximum of 62 seats and pro-secession factions 63, both short of a majority in the region's 135-seat legislature. Spain's worst political crisis since its transition to democracy four decades ago erupted in October, when Madrid cracked down on an independence referendum it had declared illegal and took control of the wealthy northeastern region. |

UN Syria talks in doubt as Russia takes on dealmaker role Posted: 15 Dec 2017 06:41 AM PST The failure of Syria peace talks this week has cast doubt over UN efforts to mediate a solution to the country's devastating war, while regime backer Russia has emerged as a key dealmaker, analysts say. UN mediator Staffan de Mistura acknowledged that "real negotiations" never took place during the eighth round of talks. "I am disappointed," he said, blaming the Syrian government for refusing to enter into dialogue and calling the round "a golden opportunity missed". |
