Florida shooting: Tributes paid to 'hero' teacher who died trying to protect students Posted: 15 Feb 2018 05:03 PM PST A teacher who died trying to protect students was among the 17 people killed at a Florida school shooting, a survivor has said. Geography instructor Scott Beigel had unlocked the door to his classroom to try and let in students who were fleeing from a rampaging gunman, according to a student, but was shot down before he could close and re-lock the door. As students and staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School have begun processing the brutal aftermath, many are hailing Mr Beigel's sacrifice. |

Venezuela's Maduro to attend Americas summit, defying host Peru Posted: 15 Feb 2018 10:28 AM PST Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said Thursday he will attend a summit of Western Hemisphere nations in April despite the host Peru saying he is unwelcome. Peru said on Tuesday that Maduro's "presence will no longer be welcome" after a decision to hold early presidential elections in his crisis-torn country without reaching an agreement with the opposition. Peru's statement followed a meeting of the 14-nation Lima Group, also Tuesday, urging Venezuela to reconsider holding elections on April 22 on the grounds that conditions for a free and fair vote, as demanded by the opposition, did not currently exist. |

Why is America unable to halt this epidemic of deadly gun violence? Posted: 15 Feb 2018 10:45 AM PST Perhaps the toughest speech he had to deliver was in December 2012, when 20 children and six adults were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. Four years later, appearing in the Oval Office with some of the parents of those youngsters who lives were stolen, and appealing for support for gun control measures, he wiped tears from his eyes. Six years later – a period in which at least 400 people have been shot in more than 200 school shootings, and in which 590 individuals died in 346 mass shootings in 2017 alone – another US president is making another speech after yet another mass fatality incident takes its turn to dominate the headlines for a day or two. |

Florida gets failing grade for its gun laws: study Posted: 15 Feb 2018 10:15 AM PST The findings in an annual survey from the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence also said U.S. states with strong gun safety laws have fewer average gun death than states with weaker laws. The study was completed before a 19-year-old man who had been expelled from his Parkland, Florida, high school was charged with 17 counts of murder, after authorities say he opened fire at the school on Wednesday. Florida, which also had one of the worst mass shootings in modern U.S. history when a gunman killed 49 people at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando in 2016, received a failing grade in the study for its gun laws. |
Posted: 15 Feb 2018 03:23 PM PST Police are piecing together the timeline of events before and after the mass shooting at a high school in Florida, saying the suspect stopped at both Subway and McDonald's before being arrested. Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel told reporters that the suspected shooter, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, arrived at Marjory Douglas High School via Uber at 2:19pm lcoal time (8:18pm BST) on Wednesday. In total, police say Mr Cruz killed 17 students and staff and injured 14. |

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu said after talks in Ankara that the two sides would set up working groups to solve key issues that have bedevilled relations. "We are not going to act alone any longer, not US doing one thing, Turkey doing another," Tillerson said after the talks. |

On eve of investigation, Vatican says pope meets sex abuse victims often Posted: 15 Feb 2018 09:29 AM PST By Philip Pullella VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Francis regularly meets with victims of sexual abuse, the Vatican said on Thursday, a disclosure that follows intense criticism of his defense of a Chilean bishop accused of covering up abuse. Vatican spokesman Greg Burke confirmed comments the pope made in private during a visit to Peru last month which were reported on Thursday by Civilta Cattolica, a journal of the Jesuit religious order. "The Holy Father meets victims of sexual abuse, either individually or in groups, several times a month," Burke said in a statement, adding that the pope "tries to help them heal the grave wounds caused by the abuses they suffered." Remarks the pope made last month have created one of the greatest image crises of his papacy, which marks its fifth anniversary next month. |

Ramaphosa elected president of South Africa, vows anti-corruption fight Posted: 15 Feb 2018 08:31 AM PST By Wendell Roelf CAPE TOWN (Reuters) - Cyril Ramaphosa was elected as South Africa's president in a parliamentary vote on Thursday and pledged to tackle endemic corruption after scandal-ridden Jacob Zuma resigned on orders from the ruling African National Congress. Ramaphosa faces an uphill battle in revitalizing growth, creating jobs and stamping out a culture of graft in a nation still polarized by race and inequality more than two decades after the end of white-minority rule. Ramaphosa, in brief remarks to parliament ahead of his first state of the nation address expected on Friday, said he would work hard "not to disappoint the people of South Africa". |
Qualcomm rejects $121 bn hostile Broadcom bid, again Posted: 16 Feb 2018 06:45 AM PST US mobile chipmaking giant Qualcomm on Friday rejected for a second time a hostile $121 billion takeover bid from Singapore's Broadcom, but said it was open to "further discussions" on a tie-up. Two days after a meeting of top executives of the two computer chipmakers, Qualcomm chairman Paul Jacobs said the recently revised bid remained unacceptable. "Our board is open to further discussions with Broadcom to see if a proposal that appropriately reflects the true value of Qualcomm shares, and ensures an appropriate level of deal certainty, can be obtained," Jacobs said in an open letter to Broadcom chief executive Hock Tan. |
