Macron hails French resistance spirit of heroic gendarme who swapped himself for hostage Posted: 28 Mar 2018 04:16 AM PDT President Emmanuel Macron led a national ceremony on Wednesday morning paying tribute to a heroic policeman who died after swapping with a female hostage during a jihadist attack. Lieutenant-Colonel Arnaud Beltrame, 44, was was killed along with three others in the shooting spree last Friday in the southwestern towns of Carcassonne and nearby Trebes. "His greatness has stunned France," Mr Macron told family members, hundreds of dignitaries and "brothers in arms" at a solemn ceremony at Paris' Invalides near Napoleon's tomb. "The intolerable can never win the day," said the president. His act was the epitome of France's "spirit of resistance" against Islamist barbarity, he added. Mr Beltrame who had been part of an elite unit, had taken the place of a female employee held as a final hostage in a supermarket by 25-year-old gunman Radouane Lakdim, who pledged allegiance to Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. The president placed France's highest award on Lt Col Beltrame's coffin draped in the French flag with his military cap laid upon it. France has lost more than 240 lives to jihadists over the past three years, but this attack was the country's worst since Mr Macron became president last May. Earlier, police stations paused for a minute's silence. Mr Beltrame took the place of the woman Lakdim was using as a human shield, but the Islamist shot the gendarme and slit his throat, leading police to intervene and shoot the attacker dead. Mr Macron said the gunman's disregard for human life mirrored that of the murderer of Mireille Knoll, an 85-year old Holocaust survivor found dead in her Paris flat last Friday. The pair attacked "an innocent and vulnerable woman because she was Jewish and who thus profaned our sacred values and our memory," said Mr Macron. Marine Le Pen and Jean-Luc Mélenchon say they will attend regardless, while the victim's son said it was wrong to ban people. Mr Macron's government has meanwhile come under fire from Right-wing opponents who claim that the attack could have been prevented. He said "ultimately no one thought that there would be a hasty attack" by Lakdim, a Moroccan-born French resident with dual nationality. How could they know he would act hours after taking a child to school, he asked. Prime Minister Edouard Philippe hit back at the criticism on Tuesday, telling parliament: "Those who say ignorantly that this attack could have been avoided, those who promise people zero risk - I say to them, these people bear a heavy responsibility in speaking so casually." |

Rick Santorum tries to correct his 'CPR' gaffe by digging an even deeper hole Posted: 28 Mar 2018 11:38 AM PDT Sentient mayonnaise blob Rick Santorum was back on CNN on Wednesday trying to walk back some controversial comments he made about the Parkland shooting survivor teens and still somehow wound up doubling down on his original comments. Santorum faced backlash after, over the weekend, he said students taking part in the March For Our Lives would be better off "maybe taking CPR classes or trying to deal with situations that when there is a violent shooter that you can actually respond to that." Speaking to CNN's Chris Cuomo on Wednesday, Santorum said, "I did misspeak in using the term CPR." But that was the extent to which Santorum made any sense. Here is more from Santorum's line of thinking: Right, okay, Rick, you just described the organizations behind March For Our Lives, so I'm not sure I see where you're going. Or like March For Our Lives? But go on. You mean the huge rallies across the country in support of bringing an end to gun violence are avoiding the issue of gun violence in schools and not unifying? Rick. Your sweater vest is too tight. After Cuomo called out Santorum and his ilk for "going after these kids, who are survivors, in the interest of political expediency," Santorum tried to wriggle free from everything he had previously said through several minutes of sparring with Cuomo. But he stood by his point that there were better ways for the students to help prevent school violence. Like take CPR, I guess? Canada teen scores lottery win of $1,000, every week, for life Posted: 28 Mar 2018 04:20 PM PDT Turning 18 is the moment when most teenagers begin to wonder how they will pay their way in the world, but for one lucky Canadian woman, paying the bills will never be a problem. Charlie Lagarde never dreamed she'd strike lucky when she hit the legal age to buy a lottery ticket in Canada by spending C$4 on a winning scratch card. The Quebec teenager wound up winning a lifetime of weekly payments of $1000. Ms Lagarde was given the choice of receiving either C$1m (£550,000) in one go or in weekly installments of $1000 - meaning should could be paid up to $4m if she reaches the average Canada life expectancy for a woman of 83. After consulting with a financial adviser, Ms Lagarde opted for weekly payments so as to avoid tax. Patrice Lavoie, a spokesman for the lottery corporation, told the Canadian Press: "It's without taxes so it's equivalent to a salary of more than $100,000 a year, so it's a great start in life for that young lady." "That was her first lottery ticket ever and she fell upon a winning ticket." Ms Lagarde claimed her prize on Monday at the lottery corporation's head office in Montreal, surrounded by friends and family. She said she wants to use the money to travel and her studies. "I want to study photography. One of my dreams would be to work for National Geographic," she told the lottery officials. |

Israel detains armed Palestinians from Gaza: army Posted: 27 Mar 2018 08:38 AM PDT Israeli soldiers on Tuesday detained three Palestinians who slipped across the border with the Gaza Strip in possession of knives and grenades, officials said, as tensions rise along the volatile frontier. The military said the trio were apprehended some 20 kilometres (12 miles) inside Israel near an army base, while police distributed pictures of hand grenades, knives and wire cutters found on them. Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman, on an inspection tour of southern Israel near the Gaza border, said he had ordered a probe and expected the results on Thursday. |

"In today's session, the council held a vote and elected Abiye Ahmed as chairperson," said the EBC presenter, without giving further details. |

Biggest convoy yet evacuates Syria's ruined Ghouta Posted: 27 Mar 2018 09:01 PM PDT The largest convoy yet of Eastern Ghouta evacuees arrived in northwestern Syria Tuesday as the regime threatened to resume its blitz if the last remaining rebels do not leave. Government troops, backed by Russia and loyalist militia, launched a ferocious assault more than a month ago to retake the enclave on the outskirts of Damascus. Russia and the Syrian regime it supports reportedly threatened to resume their blistering bombardment if the last holdout pocket that includes the main Ghouta town of Douma does not agree to a similar deal. |
China and Russia accused of waging 'war on human rights' at UN Posted: 27 Mar 2018 10:31 AM PDT The UN Human Rights Up Front initiative was established in 2014, after a series of UN failures in preventing or sounding the alarm over atrocities. China and Russia are leading a stealthy and increasingly successful effort at the United Nations to weaken UN efforts to protect human rights around the world, according to diplomats and activists. The two countries have used the UN budget panel, known as the fifth committee, to cut funding for human rights monitors and for a senior post in the secretary general's office which is supposed to ensure that human rights – one of three pillars of the UN's function – are not forgotten in its day-to-day work. |
