Missouri governor charged with felony computer data tampering Posted: 20 Apr 2018 07:13 PM PDT Missouri Governor Eric Greitens, already facing an invasion-of-privacy trial next month in connection with an extramarital affair, was charged separately on Friday with felony computer tampering tied to his political fund-raising. The new case was brought by the same St. Louis prosecutor two days before the statute of limitations deadline for the charge, which stems from Greitens' alleged theft of a donor list from the military veterans charity he created and ran for several years. Greitens, a Republican under mounting pressure from Missouri politicians of both parties to resign since the sex scandal broke earlier this year, called the latest case part of a "smear" campaign orchestrated by St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner, a Democrat. |

Tens of thousands of people earlier flocked to Republic Square in the capital Yerevan to protest against new premier Sarkisian's rule, according to AFP journalists at the scene. "I will meet Serzh Sarkisian to discuss the conditions of his resignation and of (a) peaceful transfer of power," Pashinyan said in a video address published on his Facebook page. |

Korean Air boss apologises as hot-tempered daughters resign Posted: 22 Apr 2018 03:35 AM PDT Korean Air Chairman Cho Yang-ho on Sunday apologised for the "immature" behaviour of his two daughters and said they would both immediately resign from their company posts following separate controversies. Cho Hyun-min, the younger daughter who is marketing executive at the South Korean flag carrier, is under police investigation for assault after she was accused of throwing water into a man's face at a business meeting. Four years ago her older sister Cho Hyun-ah made global headlines for angrily kicking a cabin crew member off a plane after being served macadamia nuts in a bag rather than a bowl -- an incident quickly dubbed "nut rage". |

Iran ex-prosecutor jailed months after sentence: media Posted: 22 Apr 2018 01:16 AM PDT A former Iranian prosecutor has finally been taken to prison months after being sentenced over the death in custody of a protestor, the judiciary's news agency said Sunday. The delay in starting Saeed Mortazavi's two-year sentence had caused anger and ridicule in recent weeks, with mocked-up "Wanted" posters appearing for the notorious former prosecutor online and around Tehran. The former chief prosecutor for Tehran was sentenced last year over the death of a protester who had been jailed for taking part in the mass protests over alleged election-rigging in 2009. |
Martin Lewis to sue Facebook over fake ads which scam people out of thousands Posted: 22 Apr 2018 04:01 PM PDT MoneySavingExpert founder Martin Lewis is to sue Facebook over scam adverts using his image. The commentator and financial journalist is claiming defamation over allegations that the site is publishing scam adverts using his image causing vulnerable people to hand over thousands of pounds to criminals. He said the company had hosted more than 50 of the scam ads and that it had failed to act because it was motivated by "greed". Mr Lewis said the legal action, due to be launched on Monday, was the result of months of frustration with scammers who were piggybacking on his reputation and preying on Facebook users with outlandish get-rich-quick scams. Supporters have handed over thousands of pounds in good faith, only to find the advert has nothing to do with Mr Lewis or his company. "Vulnerable people are the ones being scammed and the ones being hurt," he told the Daily Telegraph. "It has to take some responsibility." "It is not worth Facebook's while improving its systems. The company who is the leader in facial recognition, when it's been put on notice by someone that there is a scam and that that person never does adverts, it is not beyond its wit and wisdom to notify me of these adverts, and ask if they are legitimate. "But its processes don't work like that - it wants to make it flexible and easy for anyone to be able to advertise - and it has done, including criminal scammers. "Facebook has become this big agglomerated organisation where no-one seems to take care and responsibility." Any damages won through the lawsuit will be donated to charity, by Mr Lewis said the legal action was not designed to win the case itself, but to force the company to change its policy on advertising, for example by having inbuilt settings notifying well-known people every time their image was used in an advert, requiring their approval. It's distressing, and genuinely makes me feel physically sick when I hear someone has lost money because of this, and because they trusted me, and now they blame me.Martin Lewis He said he has repeatedly reported the adverts, only for new, almost identical ones to appear days later. "I don't do ads, so an ad with me in it, does not have my permission. These are companies warned about by the FCA, warned about by Action Fraud - this is about as clear cut as it gets," he said. "Why do I have to go through the time, cost and stress of doing the work? I have people spending half their week doing this. I'm not being paid by Facebook. It's making the money - if I'm going to have to do that can it pay me a fee to police it? "It sees each advert as discrete, and the next day there's another one. They're not identical but it's the same thing. They say 'it's a new advert, you've got to report it'. "It's distressing, and genuinely makes me feel physically sick when I hear someone has lost money because of this, and because they trusted me, and now they blame me. It is very upsetting, personally - not as upsetting as it is for the people who have lost money." He said "fake ads" needed to be taken seriously alongside "fake news" as a threat to civil society. "Our democracy is failing to protect vulnerable from scammers by appeasing one of the world's biggest and richest companies. That is a bit of a threat as well. There isn't enough focus on fake ads." Solicitor Mark Lewis of Seddons, leading the lawsuit, said: "Facebook is not above the law - it cannot hide outside the UK and think that it is untouchable. "Exemplary damages are being sought. This means we will ask the court to ensure they are substantial enough that Facebook can't simply see paying out damages as just the 'cost of business' and carry on regardless. "It needs to be shown that the price of causing misery is very high." A Facebook spokesperson said: "We do not allow adverts which are misleading or false on Facebook and have explained to Martin Lewis that he should report any adverts that infringe his rights and they will be removed. "We are in direct contact with his team, offering to help and promptly investigating their requests, and only last week confirmed that several adverts and accounts that violated our Advertising Policies had been taken down." |
The end of the Castro era? Raúl's exit likely to change little in Cuba Posted: 21 Apr 2018 12:01 AM PDT A child holds a Cuban flag marking the 59th anniversary of the arrival of Fidel Castro and his rebel army on the outskirts of Havana in January. As pundits around the globe proclaimed the end of the Castro era this week, Cuba's new president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, promptly dismissed such a notion. "Raúl Castro … will lead the decisions of greatest transcendence for the present and the future of this country," said Díaz-Canel in a speech marking the official changing of the guard on Thursday. |

Israel hints it could hit Iran's 'air force' in Syria Posted: 22 Apr 2018 04:26 AM PDT (This April 17 story corrects to change the media source in paragraph 8 to The Israeli News Company.) By Dan Williams JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel released details on Tuesday about what it described as an Iranian "air force" deployed in neighboring Syria, including civilian planes suspected of transferring arms, a signal that these could be attacked should tensions with Tehran escalate. Iran, along with Damascus and its big-power backer Russia, blamed Israel for an April 9 air strike on a Syrian air base, T-4, that killed seven Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) members. Israeli media ran satellite images and a map of five Syrian air bases allegedly used to field Iranian drones or cargo aircraft, as well as the names of three senior IRGC officers suspected of commanding related projects, such as missile units. |
