Hawaii volcano simmers ominously, experts warn it could blow again Posted: 08 May 2018 04:48 PM PDT By Terray Sylvester PAHOA, Hawaii (Reuters) - Hawaii residents drove through clouds of sulfur and over roads splitting open to make desperate and possibly last visits home on Tuesday before another eruption by Kilauea volcano, which has already destroyed 35 homes and other structures. The explosions from Kilauea, which began five days ago, paused on Tuesday long enough for many of the roughly 1,700 people ordered to flee their homes in the hardest-hit Leilani Estates area to rush back in for pets or cherished belongings they were forced to leave behind. "The way it looks now, I thought I'd try one more time to get my things out," U.S. Army veteran Delance Weigel, 71, said while collecting some of his prized possessions shortly after 7 a.m. on Tuesday as steam and sulfur dioxide gas rose out of cracks in the street. |

The raid struck the area of Kisweh south of Damascus late Tuesday, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said. Syria's official news agency SANA said the army had intercepted two Israeli missiles fired towards Kisweh, with state television broadcasting images of fires in the nearby area. |

Facebook to block foreign ads in Irish abortion referendum Posted: 08 May 2018 06:44 AM PDT Facebook will no longer accept advertisements from outside Ireland related to the country's May 25 abortion referendum, the U.S. firm said on Tuesday, in its latest move to boost the transparency of its political advertising. The social media group, under scrutiny for its role in Britain's Brexit referendum and the 2016 U.S. presidential election, made the move following criticism that foreign advertising could be a decisive in the campaign to overhaul one of the world's strictest abortion regimes. |

Human Rights Watch, a New York-based rights organization, said the decision showed that Israel was seeking to suppress criticism of its human rights record, and that it would challenge the decision in court. |
Posted: 09 May 2018 05:56 AM PDT The Mormon church will cut all ties with Boy Scouts, a week after movement announced its decision to drop 'boy' from its name. A statement issued by the church said it had opted for the split so it could create its own youth programme, although the two organisations' values had clearly diverged over recent years. The announcement was not a complete surprise after the religion last year removed 185,000 boys between the ages of 14 and 18 from the Scouts, signalling an end to a nearly century-old relationship based on shared values. |
