U.S. cardinal steps down amid widening sex abuse scandal Posted: 28 Jul 2018 08:28 AM PDT Pope Francis on Saturday accepted the resignation of Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, one of the U.S. Catholic Church's most prominent figures, who has been at the center of a widening sexual abuse scandal. McCarrick, 88, the former archbishop of Washington, D.C., is the first cardinal in living memory to lose his red hat and title. Other cardinals who have been disciplined in sexual abuse scandals kept their membership in the College of Cardinals and their honorific "your eminence". |
Cambodia's Hun Sen hails 'elimination' of opposition at mass rally Posted: 26 Jul 2018 05:54 PM PDT Cambodia's strongman ruler hailed Friday the success of efforts to "eliminate traitors" at a mass rally ahead of an election without a credible opposition that will leave the country as a virtual one-party state. Tens of thousands of supporters decked in the ruling party's white and blue arrived from dawn in the centre of the capital, some on motorbikes and buses, in an impressive show of support for the Cambodia People's Party (CPP), which premier Hun Sen has led for 33 years. In typically bombastic comments, Hun Sen vowed victory on Sunday and took a swipe at his opponents, many of whom have been jailed, prodded into self-exile or have gone to ground inside the kingdom since the ruling. |

US judge praises govt on reunifications, demands more Posted: 27 Jul 2018 04:53 PM PDT A federal judge praised the US government Friday for reuniting 1,800 migrant children it took from their families at the Mexican border -- but demanded that the focus shift to 400 who remain in custody because their parents have been deported. Judge Dana Sabraw spoke out a day after it was revealed that hundreds of families had still not been reunited after being split under President Donald Trump's controversial "zero tolerance" policy against undocumented migrants. Sabraw had ordered that all eligible migrant families be brought back together by 6:00 pm (2200 GMT) Thursday. |

(NYSE: CMG) investors got more good news on Thursday when the company reported its third consecutive quarter of positive earnings numbers. Chipotle's growth finally seems to be back on track, but some analysts say CMG stock is simply too expensive to own at its current price. The soft-spoken spaceman, nicknamed "Nemo" for his background as a diving medical officer in Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force, blasted into space for the first time in December. |

California fire 'tornado' kills two firefighters, thousands flee Posted: 27 Jul 2018 08:35 PM PDT By Alexandria Sage REDDING, Calif. (Reuters) - A fast-growing northern California wildfire killed a second firefighter on Friday after high winds drove it into the city of Redding, prompting mass evacuations, destroying 500 structures and threatening thousands of other dwellings and businesses, officials said. Flames raging in California's scenic Shasta-Trinity area erupted into a firestorm that jumped across the Sacramento River and swept into the western side of Redding, home to about 90,000 people, forcing residents to flee. Firefighters and police "went into life-safety mode," hustling door to door to usher civilians out of harm's way, said Scott McLean, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire). |

Zimbabwe's jobless generation hopes election will mark a change Posted: 27 Jul 2018 07:41 AM PDT By Sisipho Skweyiya HARARE (Reuters) - Young voters in Zimbabwe hope the first election without Robert Mugabe will mark a change in a country where most of them are unemployed, and say the older generation has failed to deliver them a future. Monday's contest pits Emmerson Mnangagwa, a former Mugabe deputy who became president after his boss was ousted, against Nelson Chamisa, a 40-year-old lawyer and part-time preacher who is appealing for votes from the young and disillusioned. Number two: I'm expecting the elections to usher in a new Zimbabwe. |
Catholics slam India rights body over confession ban bid Posted: 27 Jul 2018 07:11 AM PDT Catholic leaders in India Friday slammed the national women's rights watchdog for seeking to ban church confessions after two priests were arrested for allegedly raping and blackmailing a woman over 20 years. Two more priests are being investigated in the scandal that has rocked the Syrian Orthodox church in the southern state of Kerala since the 34-year-old woman reported her cycle of abuse earlier this month. The woman told police that the priests at the church used her confessions to blackmail her into having sex with them. |

The largest of the fires menacing the state has nearly doubled in size, while another pushed thousands of people to flee and a third forced the partial closure of the popular Yosemite National Park. Two young children and their 70-year-old great-grandmother Melody Bledsoe died in the Carr Fire, their family confirmed to US media. |

Spain, which has overtaken Italy as the preferred destination, has registered nearly 21,000 migrants so far this year, almost more than in the whole of last year, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said. Italy - whose new government has closed its ports to rescue vessels - has had about 18,130 migrants arriving by sea from Libya this year, with the rest going to Greece, Malta and Cyprus. |

Intel Corporation (INTC) Earnings Beat Overshadowed by Product Delays Posted: 27 Jul 2018 08:05 AM PDT Intel Corporation (Nasdaq: INTC) reported second-quarter earnings and revenue beats on Thursday afternoon, but the stock dropped more than 8 percent on Friday morning after the company provided a disappointing update on its highly anticipated 10-nanometer processors. Analysts say product delays could cost Intel market share and make INTC stock a risky long-term bet. Intel reported second-quarter adjusted earnings per share of $1.04 on revenue of $16.96 billion. |
North Korea returns remains of US soldiers killed during Korean War Posted: 27 Jul 2018 01:34 AM PDT North Korea has returned what are believed to be the remains of US soldiers killed during the 1950-53 Korean War, the latest gesture of goodwill between the two nations following the Singapore summit in June. A US military plane made a rare trip into North Korea to retrieve 55 small, flag-draped cases of remains on Friday. The repatriation is seen as a modest diplomatic victory for Donald Trump, because it was one of the agreements reached when he met with North Korea's leader, Kim Jong-un. |

Main parties concede Pakistan election to Imran Khan; protests threatened by others Posted: 27 Jul 2018 01:24 PM PDT By Idrees Ali and Asif Shahzad ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistan's former ruling party conceded defeat to cricket star-turned-politician Imran Khan ahead of final results from the country's disputed election, which European Union monitors said on Friday had not been fought on a level playing field. The party of jailed ex-prime minister Nawaz Sharif initially rejected the so far incomplete results, but by Friday its leaders appeared to accept that Khan would be the next prime minister. "We are going to sit on opposition benches, despite all the reservations," said Hamza Shehbaz Sharif, a parliamentarian and the nephew of Nawaz Sharif, who is in prison after being convicted on corruption charges he disputes. |

Three firefighters and an unknown number of civilians suffered burns during the fire, but information on the extent of their injuries was not immediately known. Governor Jerry Brown declared states of emergency for the three largest fires, which will authorise the state to rally resources to local governments. |
Russia at UN makes case for Syria reconstruction aid Posted: 27 Jul 2018 10:49 AM PDT Russia on Friday urged world powers to help Syria's economic recovery and the return of refugees as its Damascus ally pressed on with a campaign to re-take territory in the seven-year war. Russian Deputy Ambassador Dmitry Polyansky appealed for an end to unilateral sanctions against Syria and said countries should not link aid to political demands for changes to President Bashar al Assad's regime. Moscow's 2015 military intervention in support of Assad was widely seen as a turning point in the war, which has killed more than 350,000 people and displaced millions. |
