Facebook stops misinformation campaigns tied to Iran, Russia Posted: 21 Aug 2018 06:45 PM PDT Facebook said Tuesday it stopped stealth misinformation campaigns from Iran and Russia, shutting down accounts as part of its battle against fake news ahead of elections in the United States and elsewhere. Facebook removed more than 650 pages, groups and accounts identified as "networks of accounts misleading people about what they were doing," according to chief executive Mark Zuckerberg. While the investigation was ongoing, and US law enforcement notified, content from some of the pages was traced back to Iran and from others linked to groups previously linked to Russian intelligence operations, the social network said. |

Indonesian Buddhist woman imprisoned for complaining mosque too loud Posted: 21 Aug 2018 05:24 AM PDT An Indonesian court sentenced a Buddhist woman to 18 months in prison for blasphemy on Tuesday, after she was accused of insulting Islam for complaining that neighborhood mosque was too loud. China, El Salvador establish ties in fresh defeat for Taiwan Posted: 20 Aug 2018 10:45 PM PDT China and El Salvador established diplomatic relations Tuesday as the Central American nation ditched Taiwan in yet another victory for Beijing in its campaign to isolate the island. Beijing has been using its economic clout to peel away international support for the democratically-ruled island, leaving it with only 17 diplomatic allies around the world. Speaking in Beijing at the Diaoyutai Guest House, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi praised El Salvador's decision to "recognise there is one China in the world". |

Jeremy Corbyn refuses to endorse tougher sanctions on Russia Posted: 21 Aug 2018 10:32 AM PDT Jeremy Corbyn has refused to endorse calls for the UK to follow the United States and impose tougher sanctions on Russia, describing it as a "huge player on the world stage". Speaking in New Lanark, Scotland, the Labour leader called for "serious dialogue" with Moscow. It came after Jeremy Hunt, the Foreign Secretary, used his first speech in the US to call for the European Union to stand "shoulder to shoulder" with Washington over tougher sanctions on Russia. Mr Corbyn said: "I think what we need is a serious dialogue with Russia, put the megaphones down, pick up the phone and make the arrangements to have serious meetings with Russia. "Yes, there are huge human rights issues that have to be raised with Russia and Russia has to be challenged on them, but at the end of the day there has to be a relationship with Russia. We cannot just have a building up of tensions on both sides of the border." Asked if tougher sanctions should be put in place, Mr Corbyn said: "You have to realise you've got to live with Russia, you've got to negotiate with Russia, you have to be critical of Russia where they are wrong, but you also have to have that relationship. "After all, Russia is part of the Europe-wide economy, a major energy supplier and obviously a huge player on the world stage." Jeremy Corbyn Credit: Matt Dunham/AP The comments went against calls by Mr Hunt for the EU to take more decisive action against "aggressive and malign behaviour" by the Kremlin. The Foreign Secretary praised the Trump administration's support of the UK following the Salisbury poisoning, as well as its latest round of sanctions, which come into force on Wednesday. Mr Hunt said: "Of course we must engage with Moscow, but we must also be blunt: Russia's foreign policy under President Putin has made the world a more dangerous place. "Today the UK asks its allies to go further by calling on the European Union to ensure its sanctions against Russia are comprehensive, and that we truly stand shoulder to shoulder with the US. Jeremy Hunt Credit: SAUL LOEB/AFP "That means calling out and responding to transgressions with one voice wherever and whenever they occur, from the streets of Salisbury to the heart of Crimea." He later clarifies that his call for the EU to support the US "doesn't mean we will react in the same way as the US". Mr Hunt praised Donald Trump's administration and added: "There is no closer military alliance anywhere in the world than the UK and US." |

"We talked about whether he considered Roe to be settled law," she said. "He said he agreed with what (Supreme Court Chief) Justice (John) Roberts said at his nomination hearing, in which he said that it was settled law." Settled law refers to a legal position that has been consistently upheld by judges, although it can still be overturned. |

Trump directed me to break law, Michael Cohen tells court on day of disaster for president Posted: 21 Aug 2018 03:53 PM PDT In a stunning day of developments, Donald Trump's former lawyer has claimed he violated campaign laws at the direction of "the candidate", just as the president's former campaign manager was separately convicted of bank and tax fraud. The president's former lawyer, Michael Cohen, pleaded guilty to violating campaign laws at a Manhattan court and said he was acting for the "purpose of influencing the (presidential) election". Mr Cohen also admitted that he worked "with and at the direction of the same candidate" to deliver a $130,000 (£100,000) payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels to silence her claims about an affair. |
