Lavrov notes Trump blamed China, not Russia, for U.S. election meddling Posted: 28 Sep 2018 03:22 PM PDT Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov took pleasure in pointing out on Friday that U.S. President Donald Trump this week accused China, not Russia, of interfering in U.S. elections. Trump on Wednesday accused the Chinese government of seeking to influence the Nov. 6 U.S. congressional elections against his Republican Party. China has denied the allegation. |

Russia begins missile system delivery to Syria, warns West on peace talks Posted: 28 Sep 2018 02:57 PM PDT Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu had said on Monday the system would be delivered to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces in two weeks despite strong Israeli and United States objections. A week previously, Moscow had accused Israel of indirectly causing the downing of a Russian military jet in Syria. "The delivery started already and as President (Vladimir)Putin said, after that incident ... the measures that we will take will be devoted to ensuring 100 percent safety and security of our men," Lavrov told a news conference at the United Nations. |
F-35 fighter jet crashes in South Carolina, pilot ejects Posted: 28 Sep 2018 02:16 PM PDT The pilot, the only person aboard the craft, ejected safely and was being checked for injuries, said a Pentagon spokesman, adding that there were no other injuries. It was a Lockheed Martin F-35B, a short take-off/vertical landing version of the F-35, said a U.S. military official, speaking on condition of anonymity. It was the first crash of an F-35 fighter jet since they became operational in 2006, said another military official, also speaking on the condition of anonymity. |
Reporter's notebook: Watching as the world watches Trump Posted: 28 Sep 2018 12:54 PM PDT When President Trump this week regaled a fancy New York hotel ballroom full of journalists with a tale of how China's leaders respect him for his "very, very large brain," it rang a bell with me. Ah yes, I thought, as I observed the ripple of laughter the president's remark elicited: Mr. Trump's NATO summit press conference, just a few weeks earlier in Brussels. In that case, hundreds of mostly foreign journalists had assembled in a large press conference tent to glean any clues as to the US leader's intentions for the transatlantic alliance. |

Sayfullo Saipov, 30, allegedly drove a rented pickup truck down a mile-long stretch of bike path in Manhattan as children and their parents prepared to celebrate Halloween on October 31, 2017. It was the deadliest attack in New York since the September 11, 2001 Al-Qaeda hijackings brought down the Twin Towers. |

Brexit challenger Gina Miller: UK's battle over EU membership must end Posted: 28 Sep 2018 10:23 AM PDT More than two years since the 2016 EU referendum, the United Kingdom, its politicians and its business leaders remain deeply divided over Brexit while Prime Minister Theresa May has yet to clinch a divorce deal with the EU. Opponents of Brexit are exploring ways to stop what they say is Britain's biggest mistake since World War Two. Miller is leading a campaign to have another referendum, but she said if the government manages to successfully navigate an exit deal then politicians must be allowed to focus on domestic issues without the distractions of a debate about Britain's relationship with Europe. |

UN rights council renews Yemen war crimes probe Posted: 28 Sep 2018 07:10 AM PDT The United Nations Human Rights Council voted to extend an international probe of alleged war crimes committed in Yemen despite strong opposition from Saudi Arabia and several of its allies. Last month, investigators detailed evidence of possible war crimes committed in Yemen by both the Saudi-led coalition and the Huthi rebels supported by Iran. The coalition and the Yemeni government, which together are battling the Huthis, strongly criticised the probe's initial report, arguing that it underplayed rebel violations and Iran's role. |

The Future of Real Estate -- With Fewer Agents? Posted: 28 Sep 2018 01:04 PM PDT The real estate industry is facing disruption, and not just on one front. New real estate brokerages are offering an alternative to the way agents do business, tech startups are providing more information and ease of access to consumers and professionals, and companies are helping consumers bypass the need for a real estate agent altogether. Some argue that real estate agents will become obsolete, while others believe the way real estate transactions are closed will evolve. |
US regulators charge Tesla CEO Elon Musk with fraud Posted: 27 Sep 2018 07:45 PM PDT The US Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday charged Tesla CEO Elon Musk with securities fraud, alleging he misled investors last month in tweets about taking the company private. Musk tweeted August 7 that he had "funding secured" to privatize the electric automaker at $420 a share, causing a brief spike in Tesla's share price. The SEC said Musk's statements on Twitter were "false and misleading" and that he had never discussed the plans with company officials or potential funders. |
