Self-driving cars may hit U.S. roads in pilot program - NHTSA Posted: 09 Oct 2018 09:15 PM PDT Fully self-driving cars may be on the fast lane to U.S. roads under a pilot program the Trump administration said on Tuesday it was considering, which would allow real-world road testing for a limited number of the vehicles. Self-driving cars used in the program would potentially need to have technology disabling the vehicle if a sensor fails or barring vehicles from traveling above safe speeds, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said in a document made public Tuesday. NHTSA said it was considering whether it would have to be notified of any accident within 24 hours and was seeking public input on what other data should be disclosed including near misses. |

Netanyahu praises Nikki Haley after she quits UN post Posted: 09 Oct 2018 10:38 AM PDT Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the outgoing US ambassador to the United Nations after she resigned on Tuesday, following a tenure in which she asserted Washington's support for Israel. "I thank ambassador Nikki Haley for her uncompromising struggle against the hypocrisy of the UN," he wrote in Hebrew on his official Twitter account, wishing her success in her future endeavours. Haley has been a favourite in Israel as she pushed a hawkish line on Iran -- Israel's implacable foe -- and led the United States in quitting the UN Human Rights Council, accusing it of bias against Washington and Israel. |

Most heavy arms pulled out of planned Syria buffer zone Posted: 09 Oct 2018 07:27 AM PDT Jihadists and Turkish-backed rebels in Syria's last major opposition stronghold have withdrawn heavy weapons from nearly all of a planned buffer zone, a monitor said Tuesday, a day ahead of deadline. The pullback is the first major test of a deal brokered by government ally Russia and Turkey last month to avoid what the United Nations warned would be the appalling humanitarian consequences of a major government offensive. Analysts had expected Ankara to have a difficult time enforcing the September 17 deal but by Tuesday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the heavy weapons pullout was nearly complete. |

Wray made his comments days after President Donald Trump signed into law legislation that gives the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the FBI new powers to disable or destroy drones that pose a threat to government facilities. |

Trump Tariffs Push Small Firms to Plead for Same Relief as Apple Posted: 09 Oct 2018 01:00 AM PDT Shekoski, chief executive of the Primex Family of Companies in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, is among the hundreds of U.S. companies filing requests by Tuesday's deadline for exclusions from the initial round of tariffs imposed on Chinese imports. While Shekoski has testified against the duties, asked elected representatives for help and filed for exclusions on almost 80 products, he puts the odds of getting them approved at less than 10 percent. |
Posted: 09 Oct 2018 02:24 PM PDT There is no-one more qualified "in the world" to become the next US ambassador to the United Nations than Ivanka Trump, her father Donald has claimed. The position became available after Nikki Haley announced she would be resigning from the role and will be leaving the administration by the end of 2018. Mr Trump, who referred to Ms Haley as a "very special" person during a media appearance in the Oval Office, said he had known for six months that she may want to take time off from the role to spend time with her family. |
BMW i4 Is a New Electric Car Coming in 2021 Posted: 09 Oct 2018 10:40 AM PDT At the Paris auto show last week, BMW chairman Harald Krüger confirmed that the brand will be launching a fourth all-new electric vehicle in 2021. Dubbed the i4, it will be the BMW Group's fifth fully electric "core" model. BMW has given no details on the production i4 aside from the release date, but that concept had an electric range of 373 miles (albeit on the very optimistic European test cycle), a top speed of 125 mph, and a zero-to-62-mph time of 4.0 seconds. |
Man held in Bulgarian journalist murder probe to be released Posted: 09 Oct 2018 10:34 AM PDT A Romanian man who had been detained as part of the investigation into the killing of a Bulgarian journalist in the northern town of Ruse will be freed, police said on Tuesday. The brutal murder of 30-year-old Viktoria Marinova -- who presented a current affairs talk programme called "Detector" for the small TVN television channel -- has shocked the country and drawn international condemnation. Ruse police chief commissioner Teodor Atanasov said Tuesday that a man had been detained, adding that "we're still checking his alibi so he is not officially a suspect for committing the crime yet". |

In addition to asking for pay rises, the soldiers asked Abiy to "review the structure and operations of the military", ETV said. |

Trump appointees hold keys in Supreme Court immigration case Posted: 10 Oct 2018 11:47 AM PDT The nine justices on Wednesday heard the administration argue for sweeping government authority to detain immigrants awaiting deportation after they complete sentences for criminal convictions, even years after leaving prison. The administration, which has taken a hard line toward immigration, has appealed a lower court ruling in favor of immigrants that the government has said undermines its ability to deport immigrants who have committed crimes. In April, Gorsuch joined with the court's four liberal justices in a 5-4 ruling in another immigration case that could hinder the administration's ability to step up the removal of immigrants with criminal records. |
Taiwan pledges to enhance national security amid China pressure Posted: 09 Oct 2018 11:46 PM PDT Tsai's remarks came weeks ahead of islandwide local elections in late November that are seen as a bellwether for her ruling party's performance in presidential elections due in 2020. "At this time, China's intimidation and diplomatic pressure not only hurts relations between both sides, but seriously challenges the peaceful stability in the Taiwan Strait," she said in a National Day speech in Taipei. Taiwan will increase its defence budget every year to ensure it can defend its sovereignty, Tsai said, by upgrading military capabilities and self-sufficiency, including resuming domestic development of advanced training aircraft and submarines. |

'Just say no' to drug legalisation: WHO chief Posted: 10 Oct 2018 03:55 AM PDT With Canada on the verge of becoming the world's second nation to legalise recreational marijuana, the head of the World Health Organization said Wednesday that countries should think twice before opening that door. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who was in the Philippines for a regional meeting, told AFP the organisation supports availability of drugs like marijuana for medical reasons. "I think any addictive substance is not good for human health," he said. |
Morgan Stanley Gives Up on Flattening Yield Curve Too Soon Posted: 10 Oct 2018 02:00 AM PDT In July 2016, when the 10-year Treasury yield reached an unprecedented low of 1.32 percent, he pushed the envelope, declaring "the year of the bull for rates markets" would push the global benchmark to 1 percent. In what the bank's chief cross-asset strategist deemed Morgan Stanley's "most controversial call, by a country mile," Hornbach projected in late 2017 that 30-year yields would fall to a record low 2 percent by the end of this year. |
In Los Angeles, Columbus Day is out; Indigenous Peoples Day is in Posted: 08 Oct 2018 05:43 PM PDT The city of Los Angeles celebrated its first Indigenous Peoples Day on Monday, joining the growing ranks of local governments across the country replacing the traditional Columbus Day holiday with observances of Native American history and culture. The daylong commemoration began with a sunrise ceremony by native American residents, some in traditional dress, followed by a 5-kilometer run through downtown led by City Councilman Mitch O'Farrell, himself a member of the Wyandotte Nation who grew up in Oklahoma. O'Farrell was principal sponsor of legislation the council passed last year designating the second Monday of October as Indigenous Peoples Day in place of Columbus Day in the nation's second-largest city. |
