World’s Longest Sea Bridge Brings China Closer to Hong Kong Posted: 22 Oct 2018 02:00 PM PDT The $15 billion, 55-kilometer (34-mile) bridge, which Xinhua says is the world's longest sea link, opens for business at 9 a.m. Wednesday and is tipped to carry some 29,000 cars and trucks daily between Zhuhai on the mainland and Hong Kong, a former British colony. It also envisions a better marriage between China's industrial might and its one-party state and the liberal, capitalist bastions of Hong Kong and Macau, which have their own passports, currencies, trade policies, courts and civil rights. The Greater Bay Area could serve as a new growth engine for the capital markets of Hong Kong, the casinos of Macau, formerly a Portuguese colony, and nearby Shenzhen, the economic powerhouse one of Xi's predecessors, Deng Xiaoping, built on their doorstep almost four decades ago. |

The United Nations said more than 7,000 people were now heading toward the United States, as more migrants joined the original group, including some Central Americans who were already in Mexico. |

Saudi explanation of Khashoggi death not 'credible': UK minister Posted: 21 Oct 2018 07:35 AM PDT Saudi Arabia's account of the death of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside its Istanbul consulate is not credible and the culprits must be "held to account," a British minister said on Sunday. After a fortnight of denials, Saudi authorities admitted Saturday that the Washington Post columnist, a prominent critic of powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was killed after entering the consulate in Turkey on October 2. "I don't think it's credible," Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab told the BBC, adding there was a "serious question mark over the account that has been given". |

"This is larger than we might know," The Detroit News quoted Police Chief James Craig as saying. Michigan state regulators suspended the home's license, a week after investigators found the remains of 10 fetuses in a false ceiling at another funeral home in the city. |

Mnuchin says premature to comment on sanctions against Saudi Arabia Posted: 21 Oct 2018 04:08 AM PDT Mnuchin said information so far on the investigation was "a good first step but not enough" as Riyadh faced international pressure to disclose what happened to Khashoggi, who disappeared after he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2. U.S. President Donald Trump emphasized on Saturday that he was not satisfied with the Saudis' handling of the case, further raising questions over whether he would act to impose sanctions on Saudi officials believed to be behind Khashoggi's death. "It would be premature to comment on sanctions and premature to comment on really any issues until we get further down the investigation and get to the bottom of what occurred," Mnuchin told reporters in Jerusalem at the start of a Middle East visit. |
Barzani makes comeback on both Kurd, Iraq fronts Posted: 22 Oct 2018 02:22 AM PDT A year after a disastrous independence vote he had championed in Iraqi Kurdistan, veteran leader Massud Barzani has made a strong comeback both on the home front and in Baghdad. France avoids question on Saudi Arabia weapons sales Posted: 22 Oct 2018 09:13 AM PDT France declined to say on Monday if it might suspend weapons sales to Saudi Arabia, after Germany called on others to follow its example until the truth about Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi's murder is established. Riyadh has given conflicting accounts about Khashoggi's death on Oct. 2 at its consulate in Istanbul. On Sunday, Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir called the killing a "huge and grave mistake" but sought to shield Saudi Arabia's crown prince. |
