Thousands evacuated as Guatemala's Fuego volcano erupts Posted: 19 Nov 2018 07:44 AM PST Nearly 4,000 people were evacuated on Monday from areas around Guatemala's Fuego volcano, which began violently erupting overnight, the country's disaster agency Conred said. The volcano spewed out dangerous flows of fast-moving clouds of hot ash, lava and gas early Monday and more than 2,000 people had taken refuge in shelters so far, officials from the agency told reporters. More dangerous flows of hot ash and lava could be expelled, said Juan Pablo Oliva, the head of the country's seismological, volcanic and meteorological institute Insivumeh. |
Twitter CEO Dorsey sparks India social media storm Posted: 20 Nov 2018 01:44 AM PST Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has been accused of inciting hate against India's highest caste after being photographed holding a poster declaring "smash Brahminical patriarchy" during a visit to the country. Dorsey was snapped holding the offending poster alongside six women who participated in a discussion last week on the role of Twitter in India, where caste is a flashpoint issue and grievances can turn violent. "Do you realise that this picture has potential of causing communal riots at a time when several States are going to Assembly Elections in India," tweeted Indian police officer Sandeep Mittal. |

A firefighter rescued a cat from the Paradise fire and she won't leave him alone Posted: 19 Nov 2018 04:41 PM PST Get ready to sob, because this newfound friendship will pull every single heartstring you have. While raking through debris from the devastating Camp Fire that destroyed Paradise, CA, firefighter Ryan Coleman came across a fluffy gray cat. Deciding that Coleman was her human, the friendly cat scaled his body and settled down on his shoulders. SEE ALSO: Some good news: Doughnut the 28-pound cat has a new home Already comfortable with her new companion, the cat rode around on his shoulders and affectionately rubbed her face on his stubble. In a video posted to Facebook last week, the absolute floof wrapped herself around Coleman's neck while he surveyed the remnants of Paradise. The Camp Fire has been burning through Butte County in Northern California for nearly two weeks. It has claimed 77 victims since erupting on Nov 8, and destroyed more than 10,500 homes over 150,000 acres since. The state's forestry and fire protection agency estimates that the fire won't be fully contained until Nov 30. WATCH: Oprah's Favorite Things list will get you through the holiday shopping mania |

Saudi king backs son amid furore over Khashoggi murder Posted: 19 Nov 2018 02:09 PM PST Saudi King Salman stood by the crown prince and heaped praise on the judiciary Monday, in his first public remarks since critic Jamal Khashoggi's murder tipped the country into one of its worst crises. The public prosecutor last week exonerated Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the king's son, of involvement in the murder in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2, but the CIA reportedly concluded he had ordered the assassination. "The kingdom was founded on Islamic principles of justice and equality, and we are proud of the efforts of the judiciary and the public prosecution," the 82-year-old monarch said in his annual address to the Shura Council, a top advisory body. |
US troops at Mexican border to ‘start returning home’ two weeks after midterm elections Posted: 20 Nov 2018 12:57 PM PST US Army and Marine engineers deployed to the nation's southern border ahead of the arrival of a caravan of thousands of refugees and migrants are set to start returning home. The first troops who were deployed to the region as Donald Trump warned of the migrant caravan's imminent arrival will start heading home "in the coming days," Politico reported, long before many of those migrants are able to reach the US-Mexico border — and just two weeks after the 2018 midterm elections. The White House did not immediately respond to questions about whether or not it supported redeploying those troops before a previously set 15 December deadline. |

Trump's forest remarks 'rake news' for Finland Posted: 19 Nov 2018 02:17 AM PST Social media in Finland was ablaze with bemused comments on Monday after US President Donald Trump claimed the forest-covered nation prevents wildfires by raking its forest floors. Speaking to reporters during the weekend while in California to see the impact of devastating forest fires, the US president again blamed forest management, but said Finland had the answer. Trump cited the Finnish president as telling him Finns "spend a lot of time on raking and cleaning and doing things (in the forest), and they don't have any problem". |
Mike Lee Accuses Tom Cotton of Spreading ‘Fake News’ on Criminal-Justice-Reform Bill Posted: 19 Nov 2018 01:46 PM PST In a Monday tweet, Senator Mike Lee of Utah lambasted his Republican colleague, Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas, for spreading "fake news" about the bipartisan criminal-justice-reform bill currently making its way through Congress. Cotton has maintained his opposition to the First Step Act — a sweeping package of criminal-justice reforms designed to reduce incarceration rates and recidivism — despite mounting bipartisan support. In defending his opposition on Twitter Monday, Cotton accused the bill's proponents of trying to push it through Congress without allowing time for an adequate review of its contents. |

Daily Digit: Majority of Americans believe abortion should be legal Posted: 20 Nov 2018 05:24 AM PST Daily Digit is the story behind the numbers that make our world work. Today we're looking at abortions and the right to choose. In 1973, the Supreme Court ruling on Roe v. Wade decriminalized abortion in the U.S. According to a new study by Pew Research Center, nearly 60% of Americans believe abortion should be legal in all or most cases. Unsurprisingly, the views about this issue vary widely between the political parties. Among the general public, the study shows there's no significant difference in opinion between men and women. But support varies by race, with whites and blacks more accepting than members of Hispanic groups. And support is higher among individuals with higher education. Do you think abortion should be legal? |

U.S. spy chiefs should publicly report on Khashoggi death: Senator Posted: 19 Nov 2018 02:07 PM PST The reported finding was the most definitive link made yet to the de facto Saudi ruler's direct involvement and contradicts Saudi government assertions that he was not. Senate intelligence committee member Ron Wyden, in a statement to Reuters, called on U.S. spy chiefs to "come out and provide the American people and the Congress with a public assessment of who ordered the killing." Khashoggi, a U.S.-based Washington Post columnist who was a critic of the Saudi government, was murdered on Oct. 2 at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul where he went to collect documents needed for a planned marriage. After offering contradictory explanations for Khashoggi's disappearance, Riyadh said last week that Khashoggi was killed and his body dismembered when "negotiations" to convince him to return to Saudi Arabia failed. |
