"We live in a nation that is failing its moral obligations to its children, to its people," Booker said in a short speech at a church near the bridge in Selma, Alabama, where civil rights activists were attacked more than half a century ago. Nearly 600 activists marching for African-American voting rights were met on the Edmund Pettus bridge on March 7, 1965, by white state troopers who beat them with batons and sprayed them with tear gas. |

Releasing them is a gesture of "cooperation, fraternity and clemency," said the statement posted on the website of the US-backed, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The prisoners were released in several areas of northern Syria held by Kurds, including the city of Raqa, which was the de facto Syrian capital of the IS "caliphate", the statement added. |

In a statement issued through its news agency Amaq, Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack on a village it referred to as Tdmari, near Maiduguri town. It said the attack happened two days ago. The Nigerian Army spokesman insisted the "situation in the north east has been calm for sometime now. The Nigerian Army is consolidating its efforts and successes are being achieved." Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA), which split from Islamist group Boko Haram in 2016, has carried out a number of attacks in northeast Nigeria in the last few months. |

If Trump loses, we know what to expect: anger, fear and disruption Posted: 02 Mar 2019 10:00 PM PST Michael Cohen says the president will not go quietly if he is beaten in 2020. This doesn't bode well for the 2020 presidential election. Among the most chilling words uttered this week by Michael Cohen, Donald Trump's former personal lawyer and fixer, were "given my experience working for Mr Trump I fear that if he loses the election in 2020 that there will never be a peaceful transition of power, and this is why I agreed to appear before you today". |
Cisco CEO Suggests Fear of Huawei 5G Dominance Is Overblown Posted: 03 Mar 2019 12:49 PM PST "The current infrastructure around the world is built on a combination of communication suppliers from Europe, from China, from the U.S., everywhere," Robbins said in a CNN interview on Sunday. The U.S. is seeking to discourage purchases of equipment from Huawei and is pressing European governments to do the same, saying it's a gateway for Chinese spying. While major western equipment manufacturers specialize in different areas of next-generation mobile gear, Shenzhen-based Huawei competes in both wide-area radio technology and core network equipment, Robbins said. |
Mountain lion strangled by Colorado man was orphaned cougar cub Posted: 01 Mar 2019 06:35 PM PST The mountain lion strangled by a Colorado man after it attacked him on a jogging trail last month was a young cub, weighing no more than 40 pounds (18 kg) and likely orphaned but not starving, state wildlife officials said on Friday. The encounter between the young predator and Travis Kauffman garnered international headlines when authorities revealed that the 31-year-old man had not only survived a rare mountain lion attack but had suffocated the cat by stepping on its throat. A necropsy - the animal equivalent of an autopsy - showed the cougar was 4 to 5 months old, based on the condition of its teeth, and the results confirmed Kauffman's account of the struggle, Colorado Parks and Wildlife said in a statement. |

Iran condemns Britain for listing ally Hezbollah as 'terrorist' group Posted: 02 Mar 2019 02:41 AM PST Iran criticized Britain for its decision to list Hezbollah as a terrorist organization, saying on Saturday it ignored both the will of a large portion of the Lebanese people and the Tehran-backed group's role in fighting Islamic State. Britain said on Monday it planned to ban all wings of Hezbollah, which is deemed a terrorist organization by Washington, due to its destabilizing influence in the Middle East, having previously proscribed its external security unit and its military wing. "This British measure signifies deliberately ignoring a large part of the Lebanese people and the legitimacy and the legal position of Hezbollah in Lebanon's administrative and political structure," Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi was quoted as saying by state news agency IRNA. |

Lavrov condemns 'flagrant interference' by US in Venezuela Posted: 02 Mar 2019 01:45 PM PST Russian Foreign Secretary Sergei Lavrov on Saturday condemned what he called America's "flagrant interference" and "destructive influence" in Venezuela, in a telephone conversation with his US counterpart Mike Pompeo. "The provocation and external destructive influence, under the hypocritical pretext of humanitarian aid has nothing to do with the democratic process," said Lavrov, in comments cited by his foreign ministry. The strong criticism came a day after the United States and Russia clashed over how to assist crisis-wracked Venezuela, with Moscow pledging new relief channelled through President Nicolas Maduro and Washington slapping on sanctions over the blocking of US aid. |

Syria force pounds holdout IS village Posted: 03 Mar 2019 08:11 AM PST Kurdish-led forces backed by US warplanes rained artillery fire and air strikes Sunday on besieged and outgunned jihadists making a desperate last stand in a Syrian village. Islamic State group fighters holed up in Baghouz, the last sliver of the once-sprawling "caliphate" that their leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi proclaimed in 2014, responded with small arms fire as the Syrian Democratic Forces advanced. AFP reporters near the front line saw explosions lighting up the sky over the eastern Syrian farming village after an airstrike hit an underground ammunition depot. |
