Families of Lion Air crash victims criticise Boeing over alert issue Posted: 06 May 2019 02:18 AM PDT Families of victims in the Indonesia Lion Air crash hit out at Boeing Monday over its admission that engineers had identified a safety system glitch well before the fatal accident, in the latest knock to the plane maker's reputation. Boeing said Sunday engineers had found the safety alert issue on its 737 MAX aircraft in 2017, a year before the deadly crash in Indonesia that killed 189 people. According to Boeing, a supposedly standard piece of equipment that tells pilot about disagreements between angle of attack (AOA) indicators -- which measure the plane's angle vis-a-vis oncoming air to warn of impending stalls -- did not activate unless an additional optional indicator was purchased by airlines. |
Posted: 06 May 2019 10:54 AM PDT Appearing on The View on Monday, Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) was challenged by hosts Joy Behar and Sunny Hostin when he claimed that President Trump never referred to white nationalists or neo-Nazis as "very fine people" during his response to the deadly 2017 Charlottesville rally.Towards the end of his multi-segment Monday morning interview, the Texas Republican was asked about his vocal criticism of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN). Crenshaw, in case you forgot, helped spark conservative outrage against Omar last month, resulting in increased death threats against her when he attacked her for out-of-context remarks about 9/11.Meghan McCain asked Crenshaw why he felt Democrats were "reluctant to call [Omar] out," prompting the GOP congressman to reply that it was because "we're playing a team sport today.""We just had a long discussion about how Republicans feel about Trump," Crenshaw added. "I think you're seeing the same issues play out on the Democrat side with somebody on their own team and they're not sure how to handle it even though might, behind closed doors, disagree with what she's saying."Co-host Joy Behar then jumped in, noting that Omar is a new congresswoman before contrasting conservatives' reaction to her with the president's Charlottesville response."On the right, what we have is the President of the United States in Charlottesville saying there are good people on both sides and people are yelling 'Jews will not replace us.' There are not good people on both sides," she exclaimed.Crenshaw interrupted, claiming that "in the same sentence" the president said that he was "definitely not referring to white nationalists." (This, however, is not entirely true, as the president insisted there were "very fine people" on the side of a rally organized entirely by white supremacists and neo-Nazis.) "Why do you apologize for him?!" Behar shot back, causing Crenshaw to double down on his defense, telling her she needed to "read what he actually said."Hostin, meanwhile, claimed that Trump didn't admonish white supremacists in the same sentence but rather in a fumbling later statement. As they continued to argue about whether or not Trump condemned white nationalists, McCain rallied to Crenshaw's defense, saying she didn't "think it matters" because "bigotry and any kind of statements like these should be called out."As for Crenshaw's assertion that Trump said he wasn't referring to white nationalists during his Aug. 15, 2017 remarks, this really comes down to hair-splitting and not looking at the comments in a larger context."Excuse me, they didn't put themselves down as neo-Nazis, and you had some very bad people in that group," Trump said at the time. "But you also had people that were very fine people on both sides."Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Send it to The Daily Beast here |

On Sunday, the king was carried through the streets on his gilded palanquin for the royal procession. |
US lifts sanctions on Venezuelan general who joined uprising against Maduro Posted: 07 May 2019 03:14 PM PDT Mike Pence said Manuel Cristopher Figuera was being removed from list 'in recognition of his actions in support of democracy' People attend a candlelight vigil held for victims of recent violence in Caracas on 5 May. Photograph: STRINGER/Reuters The United States has sought to pile further pressure on Nicolás Maduro's crisis-hit administration by announcing it has lifted sanctions on the Venezuelan spy chief who joined last week's abortive rebellion in Caracas. Speaking in Washington, the US vice-president Mike Pence said Gen Manuel Cristopher Figuera – who fled Venezuela after backing the unsuccessful 30 April uprising – was being removed from a sanctions list "in recognition of his recent actions in support of democracy and the rule of law". "We hope the action that our nation is taking today will encourage others to follow the example of General Cristopher Figuera and members of the military who have also stepped forward and taken a stand for … libertad," Pence said. The US treasury department indicated the move was designed to influence Venezuelan officials "who take concrete and meaningful actions to restore democratic order". The move is perhaps the clearest sign yet that Washington believes there may still be life in opposition leader Juan Guaidó's bid to spark a mutiny against Maduro. Figuera was the only major figure to back Guaidó when he tried to launch an insurrection outside an airforce base in Caracas last Tuesday. Reports suggest that other top members of Maduro's administration may have been involved in the "Operation Freedom" plot – but then failed to follow through for reasons that remain murky. They include Venezuela's defense minister, Vladimir Padrino López, who was sanctioned by the US last year, and the head of its supreme court, Maikel Moreno, who was sanctioned in 2017. Pence also tried to turn up the heat on the supreme court's 25 judges, warning they would be held "accountable for their actions" if they continued to support what he called "the single greatest disrupter of peace and prosperity in the western hemisphere". "Nicolás Maduro is a dictator … and Nicolás Maduro must go," Pence said. Maduro loyalists have dismissed the unsuccessful revolt as a botched US-backed coup attempt. "The 30th April … was a demonstration that our armed forces are Bolivarian, revolutionary and nationalist," Pedro Carreño, a top member of Maduro's Socialist party, told the Guardian. "It was a demonstration that the Venezuelan right has no plan for our country beyond handing it over US oil corporations." "If the US wants to launch a military action, then we are ready for anything," Carreño added. Additional reporting by Patricia Torres |

US warns Iran against attack with aircraft carrier in Middle East Posted: 06 May 2019 12:15 AM PDT The US has deployed an aircraft carrier to the Middle East following "troubling and escalatory indications" that forces in Iran were preparing an attack on US forces in the region, according to a White House official.National security advisor John Bolton said on Sunday the decision was intended to "send a clear and unmistakable message" that any attack on US interests would be met with "unrelenting force".The deployment was approved after reports that US forces at sea and on land were potential targets, according to a defence official who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity."The United States is not seeking war with the Iranian regime, but we are fully prepared to respond to any attack, whether by proxy, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or regular Iranian forces," Mr Bolton said. The USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group and a bomber task force have been sent to the US Central Command region, which include the Middle East.Mr Bolton did not provide details on the alleged attack but the statement is expected to raise tensions between the US and Iran. The Pentagon had no immediate comment on Mr Bolton's statement.Secretary of state Mike Pompeo told reporters that the actions by the US had been planned for some time."It is absolutely the case that we have seen escalatory actions from the Iranians and it is equally the case that we will hold the Iranians accountable for attacks on American interests," he said."If these actions take place, if they do by some third-party proxy, a militia group, Hezbollah, we will hold the Iranian leadership directly accountable for that."Mr Pompeo also chose not to provide details on the allegations but told reporters that Iran's actions were unrelated to the recent conflict in Gaza and Israel. The deployment is the latest example of rising tensions between the Trump administration and Iran, with Mr Bolton and Mr Pompeo being frequent critics of the country's regime.Last month, Donald Trump announced the US will no longer exempt major importers of Iranian oil, such as China, India, Japan, South Korea and Turkey, from US sanctions if they continue to buy from the country. The US has also recently designated Iran's Revolutionary Guard, a branch of the country's armed forces, as a terrorist group. It was the first time the US had labelled another nation's military as a terrorist organisation. In response, Iranian president Hassan Rouhani named all US forces in the Middle East as terrorists and accused the US government of sponsoring terrorism. The relationship between Tehran and Washington has been fraught since Mr Trump unilaterally withdrew last year from the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement and reimposed sanctions on the country.Agencies contributed to this report |
Security high in restive Kashmir as India votes again Posted: 06 May 2019 01:46 AM PDT India held the next stage of its marathon election on Monday, with 90 million people eligible to vote in key seats for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party and security heavy in restive Kashmir. The world's biggest poll has been plagued by violence, with militants throwing a grenade at a voting booth Monday and shooting dead a candidate in south Kashmir over the weekend. At the 2014 election, Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 39 of the 51 constituencies up for grabs on Monday, as he swept to power and the opposition Congress party suffered its worst ever result. |

Amid U.S. measles outbreak, who needs an additional dose of the vaccine? Posted: 06 May 2019 08:25 AM PDT The United States is in the midst of its largest measles outbreak in 25 years, with the disease mainly hitting people who have failed to receive the recommended two doses of the live measles vaccine. While the vast majority of measles patients are unvaccinated children, up to 10 percent of patients in the current outbreak are adults who received at least one dose of the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued recommendations on when adults may need to seek an additional dose of the MMR vaccine: WHICH ADULTS ARE CONSIDERED AT HIGH RISK? |

Russia says it won't ground Sukhoi plane despite fatal crash-landing Posted: 06 May 2019 08:53 AM PDT The crash-landing on Sunday is the latest serious setback for the plane, the first new passenger jet developed in Russia since the fall of the Soviet Union, and threatens to undermine confidence in an airliner Moscow touts as proof it can produce its own high quality civil passenger aircraft. In a blow to the Russian aviation industry, regional carrier Yamal Airlines, the country's second biggest operator of the Superjet after Aeroflot, said on Monday it was cancelling its planned purchase of 10 of the planes, the TASS news agency reported. Investigators have started trying to piece together why the Aeroflot jet, which had been flying from Moscow to the northern Russian city of Murmansk on Sunday, was forced to make an emergency landing and why that landing went so badly wrong. |

"The unfortunate thing" about Florida, Gillum said, was that "we almost look directly at how we disenfranchise as many people as we possibly can," citing alleged attempts to close polling sites and dismiss absentee ballots. Video shows Apple’s new iPhone 11 design with one change we’re not so sure we like Posted: 06 May 2019 05:17 AM PDT Apple isn't always first when it comes to introducing new smartphone features. The company is known for taking its time and getting things right rather than trying to be first to market. Just ask Samsung about the travesty that is the Galaxy Fold and you'll understand why Apple is more than happy to do things well instead of just doing them quickly. When it comes to smartphone design, however, Apple has always been a trendsetter. Most people likely don't even remember what smartphones used to look like before the first iPhone debuted in 2007. Fast-forward a decade, and rival smartphone makers still scramble to copy Apple's every move. 2018 was indeed a rough year for smartphone fans since just about every handset out there was nothing but a boring iPhone X copycat, but 2019 is going in a completely different direction. In fact, something quite interesting is happening this year: For the first time since companies like Samsung and others popularized the phablet form factor, Android companies are actually moving away from copying Apple and starting to come up with their own novel designs. The upcoming iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Max, and iPhone 11R (if that's what Apple ends up calling it) are shaping up to be nearly identical to their predecessors in terms of design. There will some refinements here and there, and we know that it's going to put Android phones to shame when it comes to fit and finish. But overall, the iPhone 11 design we've seen leak time and time again is anything but exciting and new. Now, a new video has taken the information from all the leaks we've seen over the past few weeks and used it to show us what Apple's next-generation flagship iPhone models will look like.We still have more than four months to go before Apple announces its new iPhone 11 series smartphones, but the leaks have really picked up over the past month or so. Long story short, we now likely know just about everything there is to know about Apple's iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Max design. The image above shows what will likely end up being the iPhone 11's only distinguishing feature as far as hardware design goes. The front of the iPhone 11 will look exactly like the front of the iPhone XS and the front of the iPhone X -- an all-screen design interrupted by a large notch at the top of the screen. Around back, however, both the iPhone 11 and the iPhone 11 Max are expected to have a large square camera array consisting of three camera lenses and an LED flash. Only, it won't actually end up looking like it does in the render above, because we recently learned that Apple has a pretty big change planned for the rear camera on its iPhone 11 series phones. In the iPhone 11 Max render above, the phone itself is gold but the area around the cameras is black. Like other smartphone makers out there, this is the design Apple has always used on its iPhones. This year, however, word from the world's most accurate Apple insider suggests that Apple has decided to color-match the iPhone 11's rear camera so that it blends in with the rest of the back of the phone. Honestly, we're not so sure how we feel about the change. It looks pretty good in the render above, but this render uses some shading on the sapphire crystal to darken the glass. As a result, there's still some contrast between the back of the phone and the camera array. The actual iPhone 11 models Apple releases later this year obviously won't have any shading on the sapphire crystal, and now a new video created by graphic designer Gunho Lee shows us what Apple's next-generation iPhones will look like with color-matched cameras.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxsWPUfmn74We'll obviously have to wait to pass a final judgement until we see the real iPhone 11 series phones Apple unveils this coming September. For the time being, however, we're not so sure we like this change. |

It is customary in Myanmar for authorities to free prisoners across the country around the time of the traditional New Year, which began on April 17. Swamped by media and well-wishers as they walked through the gates of Insein Prison, on the outskirts of Yangon, a grinning Wa Lone gave a thumbs up and said he was grateful for the international efforts to secure their freedom. |

Sri Lanka deploys troops after communal violence breaks out in wake of Easter Sunday bombings Posted: 06 May 2019 04:00 AM PDT The Sri Lankan government has deployed troops and imposed a curfew after clashes broke out between Catholic and Muslim communities in Negambo, one of the sites of the Easter Sunday bombings. Mobs attacked homes and businesses in the first reported outbreak of violence since the bombings on churches and luxury hotels that left 257 dead. The Easter attacks, carried out by eight Sri Lankan suicide bombers were claimed by Isil. Eye witnesses to Sunday's clashes said that they began with a scuffle between Catholic and Muslim three-wheel trishaw drivers in Poharathota, a Muslim settlement. "It just escalated from there, ending in Muslim houses being damaged and a few trishaws set on fire," said Luxman Perera, a carpenter at the St. Sebastian's Church. The successive violence "seemed coordinated", residents told The Telegraph. "People took advantage of the situation and the violence spread very quickly," said Mohamed Nizam, a shopkeeper. The Dhalupotha mosque, some four miles from the area where the initial fight broke out, was pelted with stones and damaged by men wielding sticks. The Archbishop of Colombo, Malcom Ranjith, condemned the violence, which left homes in Muslim settlements badly damaged. "We were terrified. A mob of about eight to ten men swinging huge poles and some of them wearing helmets broke our door and rushed into our house last night. They were screaming that they will kill us," a mother of two, who asked to be identified as just Fathima, told The Telegraph. "They broke everything... The children were crying and I thought they were going to set fire to us," she said sobbing, adding she was scared for her family to stay in their home. In the past the government and the military have been accused of turning a blind eye to attacks on Muslims. The police said that no casualties were reported during the Sunday night violence. Homes and businesses belonging to Muslims were targeted in the clashes Credit: M.A. Pushpa Kumara/EPA-EFE/REX Following the tensions, the government shut down all social media for the second time since the Easter Sunday attacks to prevent the spread of rumours and incitement. A ban imposed following the bombings was lifted just three days ago. Authorities were particularly wary of allowing grievances to fester as some schools re-opened their doors on Monday. Amid tight security, classes resumed for public school students in Grades six to 13 – those between the ages of ten and 19 – although reports said most classrooms were near empty with many teachers also avoiding returning to work out of fear. Private schools, including those for Catholic students, remained closed while public school pupils aged between five and ten won't return until May 13. Students that did attend lessons today were forced to bring transparent school bags, lunch boxes and water bottles. Parking vehicles near school sites was banned entirely with special zones set up for school buses. In an attempt to gain control over Sri Lanka after the attacks, President Maithripala Sirisena has re-introduced the wartime state of emergency laws which give the police and military sweeping powers to arrest people without warrants and detain them for long periods of time. Muslim face coverings were also banned under this law last week. On Monday morning, security remained tight in Negambo, with the air force and elite special forces on guard amid an atmosphere of tense calm. St. Sebastian's Church in Negambo was the worst affected of the six bombing sites, with more than 100 worshippers killed during the Easter Sunday service. |
This U.S. Ally Could Buy Russia's Su-57 Stealth Fighter and S-500 Air Defense System Posted: 06 May 2019 12:40 AM PDT Turkey's plans to purchase the Russian S-400 missile system marked a major shift in Ankara's defense orientation, eliciting a sharp response from Washington. Nonetheless, the S-400 deal barely scratches the surface of the blooming Turkey-Russia defense relationship and the threat that it poses to NATO's military coherence. The Kremlin and Rosoboronexport-- Russia's state arms exporting agency—are seeking to capitalize on the political goodwill from the S-400 sale with several other high-profile contracts, including Russian jet fighters and next-generation missile defense system. When the US defense department suspended F-35 transfers to Ankara "pending an unequivocal Turkish decision to forego delivery of the S-400" early last month, Russian and western defense commentators speculated that Russia would pounce with a snap Su-35 offer. It now appears, however, that Moscow has its sights set on a bigger deal. In an interview given to Turkish state media, Rostec chief Sergei Chemezov suggested that Moscow is open to inking a Su-57 contract: "These fifth-generation Russian fighter jets [the Su-57] have outstanding qualities, and show promise for export." |

Watch a Tesla Model 3 quickly swerve on its own to avoid an accident at the last second Posted: 06 May 2019 04:06 PM PDT It's a shame that much of the narrative surrounding Tesla these days centers on the company's stock price, Elon Musk's shenanigans on Twitter, or other trivial details that don't truly capture some of the impressive automotive innovations Tesla has rolled out at a slow and steady pace over the years.Even today, a talking head on CNBC proclaimed that the 'Tesla dream' had come to an end and that the reality is that Tesla simply is unable to execute as promised. But if we move past the talking points, there's a lot of good news lurking beneath the surface. As a prime example, the number of Tesla vehicles on the road has exploded in recent years. To this point, Tesla deliveries from Q1 of 2018 to Q1 of 2019 jumped by an astounding 110%. In turn, we've seen a discernible uptick in videos depicting Tesla vehicles on Autopilot avoiding potentially tragic collisions. The latest example was posted to Reddit earlier today and depicts a Model 3 swerving out of harm's way after being rear-ended and almost careening into a car ahead:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVdTAwU07Jc"This morning I was rear ended coming to a stop by a lady driving about 40-50 mph," the uploader of the video notes. "The swerve in the video is not me. I don't really remember in the moment but I think it was the Tesla that avoided the front collision. Saved me from bigger damage."Now is it possible that the driver instinctively swerved to the left to avoid the car ahead and simply doesn't remember? Of course. That said, there are rumblings on the Reddit thread that Tesla will take a look at the logs and see exactly what happened.Interestingly enough, this is the second Autopilot video we've seen make the rounds in just the last two weeks:https://twitter.com/RaghuKonka/status/1120209206995406848 |
