Trump renews Mexico tariff threat amid row over migration deal Posted: 10 Jun 2019 03:28 PM PDT US President Donald Trump renewed his threat Monday to impose tariffs on Mexico as controversy erupted over what exactly is in the countries' new migration deal, which the Mexican government admitted would be reviewed in 45 days. Trump reignited the pressure three days after granting a reprieve from tariffs that he had threatened to apply from this week to force the major US trading partner to boost measures against illegal immigrants trying to enter the United States. In a series of statements and tweets, Trump alluded to still-secret provisions in the deal that he said would need approval by the Mexican Congress. |
Maine Gov. Signs Bill Allowing Non-Doctors to Perform Abortions Posted: 11 Jun 2019 08:46 AM PDT Maine's newly elected Democratic governor, Janet Mills, signed a bill Monday granting medical professionals who are not licensed doctors the authority to perform abortion procedures. In a statement released Monday, Mills argued that the bill, which will allow registered nurses and physician assistants to administer abortion-inducing drugs and perform in-clinic abortions."Allowing qualified and licensed medical professionals to perform abortions will ensure that Maine women, especially those in rural areas, are able to access critical reproductive health care services when and where they need them from qualified providers they know and trust," Mills said.Maine joins California, Colorado, Vermont, and New Hampshire in allowing individuals who are not licensed physicians to administer abortions."States across the country, including Vermont and New Hampshire, have already eliminated this outdated restriction on abortion care," said Democratic state representative Sara Gideon, who sponsored the bill. "This law will allow women to receive the care they need from a provider they trust and eliminate the financial and logistical hurdles they face today."Carroll Conley, executive director of the Christian Civil League of Maine, told the New York Times that his group objects to the bill on purely philosophical grounds but also raised a number of pragmatic concerns, including whether nurses would receive adequate training in how to administer abortions by the time the law takes effect in September, and whether patients might be placed in danger if they have an emergency medical complication at one of the remote clinics where the bill is designed to facilitate abortion access. |

Pose’s Dyllón Burnside: I’d Love to See Queer Folks Embraced as the Mainstream—Not ‘the Other’ Posted: 10 Jun 2019 02:25 AM PDT Photo Illustration by Sarah Rogers/The Daily Beast/Photos GettyIn this special series, LGBT celebrities and public figures talk to Tim Teeman about the Stonewall Riots and their legacy—see more here.Dyllón Burnside is an actor currently starring as Ricky Evangelista in Pose, the second season of which starts on FX on Tuesday, June 11, at 10 p.m.When/how did you first hear about the Stonewall Riots, and what did you make of them?I first heard about Stonewall and the riots that took place there when I came to New York for a summer music theater program at NYU. I met an older couple who became big brothers to me. They were the first gay black married couple I had met in my life. I was so shocked, fascinated, and curious about them. Stonewall 50: Don't Forget the Black & Brown LGBTQ StruggleI didn't know much about gay culture and had even less experience with gay bars. They took me on a tour of Christopher Street and the old "gayborhood" in the village. Stonewall was our first stop. I was lucky enough to meet guys like them who really had an interest in mentoring and caring for younger brothers. That's something I'm truly grateful for because everyone doesn't find that and I think that kind of sharing of history and experiences is so necessary for the community. It gave me a sense of security and belonging. I was also shocked that I had never heard anything about Stonewall before, which highlighted for me a need to tell the stories of queer people and history in the media on a much larger scale. It's why I do what I do. What is the riots' significance for you now?To know that people fought with their bodies and souls for my right to be and express freely made me feel a responsibility to honor that bloodshed. It is also what emboldens me to keep fighting with pride. Knowing that their fight produced results reinforces my faith that the work I'm doing and seeds I'm sowing to further liberate men, men of color, and queer men of color from the bondage of toxic masculinity, homophobia, transphobia, and misogyny, will bear fruit as well. How far have we LGBT people come since 1969?We have come to a place in history where LGBTQ folk are more visible and celebrated than ever, and that only continues with the rise of shows like Pose. The work of our ancestors made room for us to thrive in our communities. We can now find refuge in our bars. We have safe places to pray and worship. We even have brilliant queer folks leading major companies and organizations and serving as leaders in our government. However, the work doesn't end there. We still see our people persecuted all around the world and even here on U.S. soil. What would you like to see, LGBT-wise, in the next 50 years? In the next 50 years I'd love to see queer folks not only be accepted in the mainstream but embraced as the mainstream. I look forward to the day when the lives and experiences of queer people, specifically queer people of color, are normalized. No more being treated as the other. I envision a world where the collective "we" invokes an image of all "the people" living and working side by side, sharing mutual respect and understanding. Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Michigan hotel offers free room to women seeking abortions Posted: 10 Jun 2019 02:39 PM PDT A hotel manager in Michigan's rural Thumb region is offering free lodging to women who come from states that have passed tough abortion restrictions to have the procedure. The Detroit Free Press reports Yale Hotel manager Shelley O'Brien proffered an invitation on Facebook that includes roundtrip transportation to appointments. O'Brien, a 55-year-old mother and grandmother, says she wants to help women "maintain autonomy" over their bodies. |
Watergate figure Dean details Trump-Nixon parallels Posted: 10 Jun 2019 03:06 PM PDT John Dean, the White House lawyer who helped bring about the Watergate downfall of Richard Nixon, told Congress Monday that there are "remarkable" similarities between the former president's illegal behavior and alleged acts of obstruction by Donald Trump. Dean told the House Judiciary Committee that the Mueller report, which outlines 10 possible acts of obstruction by Trump, is equivalent to the famous "road map" that prosecutor Leon Jaworski delivered to Congress in 1974, sparking impeachment proceedings against Nixon and forcing his resignation. "In many ways the Mueller Report is to President Trump what the so-called Watergate roadmap... was to President Richard Nixon," the 80-year-old Dean told the House Judiciary Committee. |
Posted: 11 Jun 2019 03:30 AM PDT Clarity of thought and expression about moral issues is not a core competency of CEOs.If anyone had any doubt, look no further than the "historic" pro-abortion statement by nearly 200 CEOs that ran in a full-page ad in the New York Times. It is a festival of absurdity and euphemism, an exercise in perverse virtue-signaling to a progressive audience that believes that maintaining one of the most permissive pro-abortion regimes in the developed world is a virtue. The CEOs define abortion as "equality" ("Don't Ban Equality") and, of course, refer to it as "comprehensive reproductive care," the ubiquitous phrase that has the advantage of sounding like the opposite of what it's describing. The CEOs contend that abortion is central to their businesses, which might be true if all of their companies had the same business model as Planned Parenthood, one of the organizers of the effort. But Bloomberg L.P., Amalgamated Bank, and H&M, to name three of the companies whose CEOs signed the ad, are hardly dependent on abortion to thrive. The old saw was, "What's good for General Motors is good for America." Now, according to top CEOs, what's good for abortion is good for American business. They seem to consider abortion a crucial component of GDP just like personal consumption, business investment, government spending, and net exports. They argue that "equality in the workplace" is an important business issue, and it is impossible to achieve without unrestricted access to abortion. Any restriction "threatens the health, independence and economic stability of our employees and customers." The idea that abortion is necessary for the health of women is one of the most misleading pro-abortion cliches. Comprehensive data from Florida last year shows that three-quarters of abortions were elective, and another one-fifth were for social and economic reasons. A small percentage involve a threat to the mother's life or health, and pro-life laws account for such cases — even the sweeping Alabama law has a health exception. The contention that restrictions put "the economy at risk" is nonsensical. Are we supposed to believe that the reduction of the abortion rate in the U.S. from its high in 1980 of 29.3 abortions per 1,000 women of childbearing age to its post-Roe v. Wade low of 14.6 as of 2014 has been a calamity for corporate America? On what grounds? Do these CEOs really lament that we don't have the abortion rate of Bulgaria, Cuba, or Kazakhstan? By this standard, Utah must be a terrible place to do business since its abortion rate is so low, and the District of Columbia an enticing place to do business since its abortion rate is so high. (To the contrary, Forbes ranks Utah as the second-best state for business in the country.)The implication is that these CEOs prefer that their employees and customers not become mothers, or if they are mothers, not have more children. It apparently hasn't occurred to them that unborn children will grow up to buy their products or perhaps work for their firms one day, and indeed all the employees they claim to be protecting were themselves, once, vulnerable in the womb. At the end of the day, their argument isn't really about restrictions being "bad for business." What they care about most is that such policies, as they say, go "against our values." The CEO ad is another sign that the debate over abortion has entered a new phase. It isn't enough to say that abortion should be safe, legal and rare, the old Bill Clinton formulation, because that implies a moral disapproval. Now, abortion is a positive good. A stance that used to be limited to the fringes is mainstream enough that CEOs are willing to sign up for it. Pro-life laws will have to prevail against this inflamed pro-abortion sentiment — and the swath of big business that shares it.© 2019 by King Features Syndicate |

US resident released from Iran custody says it eases tension Posted: 11 Jun 2019 12:08 PM PDT A Lebanese man with permanent U.S. residency who had been imprisoned in Iran for years on charges of espionage said Tuesday that he was subjected to "kidnapping, arbitrary detention and a show trial," adding that his release served to de-escalate tensions between the U.S. and Iran. In his first comments after arriving in his native Lebanon, Nizar Zakka denied reports that his release was part of a wider deal but suggested that it had helped avert further escalation in the region. Zakka's release comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and the U.S. after President Donald Trump withdrew the U.S. from Tehran's nuclear deal with world powers. |
US business leaders express support for abortion rights Posted: 10 Jun 2019 01:14 PM PDT Nearly 200 business leaders on Monday endorsed an open letter on abortion rights, saying conservative efforts to restrict "comprehensive reproductive care" would be bad for both employees and customers. "Restricting access to comprehensive reproductive care, including abortion, threatens the health, independence and economic stability of our employees and customers," said the open letter that appeared as an ad in the New York Times. Several prominent tech executives were among those who signed the letter, including Twitter chief executive Jack Dorsey, Jeremy Stoppelman of Yelp and Stewart Butterfield of Slack. |

Biden Hardens China Stance: U.S. Needs to ‘Get Tough’ on Beijing Posted: 11 Jun 2019 10:18 AM PDT Former vice president Joe Biden plans to announce a new, hardened stance on China Tuesday, when he will tell Iowans that the country is "a real threat" to U.S. interests."We are in a competition with China. We need to get tough with China," Biden plans to say at a campaign event in Iowa according to prepared remarks, which add that China engages in "cheating" and "abusive behavior" economically.Biden, who chaired the Senate Foreign Relations Committee before becoming Barack Obama's vice president, raised eyebrows by downplaying the influence of the world's second-largest economy earlier this year when he said "they're not competition for us.""China is going to eat our lunch? Come on, man," Biden said at a campaign stop in Iowa in April. "They can't figure out how they're going to deal with the corruption that exists within the system. They're not bad folks, folks."Although Biden's planned Tuesday remarks are harshly critical of President Trump's approach to China as a "damaging and erratic trade war," they echo the president's frequent talking point that China is a threat, calling the country "a serious challenge to us, and in some areas a real threat.""China is pressing its advantage all over the world," Biden will say. "And every single step that Donald Trump is taking is only exacerbating the challenge."The White House raised tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese imports from 10 to 25 percent last month after accusing the country of reneging on the terms of a trade deal it had previously agreed to. The U.S. also currently has a 25 percent tariff on $50 billion worth of Chinese high-tech products.Biden and others have criticized the tariffs, saying American consumers and businesses are eating the cost, not China's economy. The leading Democratic presidential candidate says his solution involves a new "initiative in scientific research, cutting-edge infrastructure, and a modern workforce that will help American workers and entrepreneurs compete and win.""We need to rally more than half the world's economy to hold China to account for their cheating. And get a chorus of voices speaking out on China's repression," Biden will say. |

UN nuclear watchdog warns Iran has begun accelerating production of enriched uranium Posted: 10 Jun 2019 08:12 AM PDT The UN's nuclear watchdog chief revealed on Monday that Iran has accelerated its production of enriched uranium, as Tehran warned the US it "cannot expect to stay safe" after introducing sanctions on the country. Yukiya Amano, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), voiced rare concern over "increasing tensions" between Washington and the Islamic Republic. He said Tehran was now producing more enriched uranium than before, following through with a threat made last month. Iran announced in early May that it no longer considered itself bound to keep to the limits of stocks of heavy water and enriched uranium which were agreed as part of the 2015 landmark nuclear deal, after the US withdrew. "Yes, (the) production rate is increasing," Mr Amano told a news conference when asked if enriched uranium production had accelerated since the agency's last quarterly report, which found Iran compliant with the nuclear deal as of May 20. Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, IAEA, Yukiya Amano of Japan, addresses the media during a news conference after a meeting of the board Credit: AP He declined to say how much it had increased by and it was not clear when it might reach stockpile limits set in the pact. President Donald Trump pulled the US out of the multilateral accord, introduced sanctions on Tehran and has pressured allies to cut trade with the Islamic Republic, crippling the country's oil economy. During a meeting with his German counterpart in Tehran on Monday, Mohammed Javad Zarif, Iran's foreign minister, issued the stark warning over US security, accusing it of launching an "economic war" on his country. He said Iran would not start a war but "whoever starts a war with us will not be the one who finishes it". President Donald Trump shows a signed Presidential Memorandum after delivering a statement on the Iran nuclear deal Credit: AP The visit by Heiko Maas was part of a concerted European effort to preserve the nuclear pact with world powers and defuse rising US-Iranian tensions. "The only way to decrease tensions in the region is to stop the economic war," Mr Zarif said, adding that Germany and the EU had an "important role" in such efforts. Iran has claimed the European signatories to the deal have not done enough to provide it with alternative ways to trade. Mr Maas acknowledged limits to how much help the European countries can provide. "We want to fulfil our obligations," he said during his joint news conference with Mr Zarif. "We cannot work miracles, but we will try to avert a failure." France, Britain and Germany have set up a special-purpose vehicle called Instex, designed to allow payments to Iran that would legally bypass sanctions but it is yet to be launched. "This is an instrument of a new kind, so it's not straightforward to operationalise it," Mr Maas told reporters. "But all the formal requirements are in place now, and so I'm assuming we'll be ready to use it in the foreseeable future." |

Trump administration moves to release migrant children faster from U.S. custody Posted: 10 Jun 2019 01:41 PM PDT The Trump administration is again changing the way it vets people who want to sponsor minors who crossed the U.S.-Mexico border alone in an effort to speed up the release of thousands of migrant children currently in U.S. custody. Under the change, announced to staff on Friday, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which houses unaccompanied migrant children, will no longer require an immigration records check on potential sponsors already backgrounded by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). In May 2018, HHS began routinely sending sponsors' fingerprints to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to check their records on potential sponsors' immigration history, which would include any arrests for immigration violations and active deportation orders. |

Trump raises tariff threat anew over secret provision in Mexico deal Posted: 10 Jun 2019 04:40 AM PDT President Donald Trump said Monday a secret provision of the US immigration deal with Mexico will require the approval of that country's legislature and warned US tariffs will be reinstated if it is not forthcoming. Trump first alluded to the secret provision in a tweet late Sunday defending the agreement with Mexico against criticism it contained little that had not already been agreed to. Trump, for his part, withdrew a threat to impose a five percent tariff on all Mexican imports, beginning Monday and escalating to 25 percent by October. |

Samsung’s overhauled Galaxy Note 10 design shown again in new leaks Posted: 10 Jun 2019 05:17 AM PDT Samsung's Galaxy Fold is a complete and total failure at this point. The company was mere days away from launching its first smartphone with a foldable display when a number of reviewers found inexcusable defects with the Galaxy Fold's design, and the release had to be canceled. That's right, a bunch of bloggers are apparently better than a multi-billion dollar company at quality assurance. Samsung postponed the phone's release and went to work on fixing it, but we would definitely suggest skipping the Fold even once the updated model launched. It's a bad phone with a terrible design, and it's a total waste of $2,000. Everyone knows that Samsung is horrible at first-generation products, so smart consumers will wait for the second- or even third-generation model, since Samsung excels at refining existing products, not introducing new ones.If you want proof that Samsung is fantastic at refining its products, look no further than the Galaxy S10. Early Galaxy S phones were awful, plasticky iPhone copycats. Now, the Galaxy S10 is easily one of the sleekest and most powerful smartphones on the planet. Want more proof that Samsung is great at refinement? Just wait until you see the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10 Pro, which are set to be released in August. With about two months to go until Samsung unveils its next-generation Galaxy Note lineup, leaks are hitting the rumor mill in full force right now. We've learned all sorts of details from reliable sources in recent weeks, and we know that this is the first year Samsung is planning to release not one but two different Galaxy Note 10 models in 2019. Just as the Galaxy S10e offers a less expensive option to people who don't want to spend over $1,000 on a smartphone, Samsung is reportedly readying am "entry-level" Note 10 that will be more affordable than the Galaxy Note 10 Pro, which could have a base price as high as $1,200.We've heard all about Samsung's new Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10 Pro designs over the past month or so, and then last week we saw renders based on design files that were stolen from the factory where the Note 10 will be manufactured. The renders are believed to be accurate, for the most part, and now a new leak reaffirms that they were the real deal. Two different users took to leak aggregator Slashleaks over the weekend and posted renders of the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10 Pro in protective cases. Here's the Note 10 from Slashleaks:And here's the Galaxy Note 10 Pro from Slashleaks:Samsung is expected to announce its new Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10 Pro at a press conference in early August, and the phones should be released in the weeks that follow. |
