Paul Ryan on tax plan: 'Too long to go through all the math’ Posted: 30 Sep 2012 11:15 AM PDT Paul Ryan says "it would take me too long to go through all the math" involved in the tax plan he and Mitt Romney are proposing. The Republican vice presidential nominee said on "Fox News Sunday" that their plan--a 20 percent across-the-board income tax cut--would focus on deductions and closing tax loopholes for the rich, [...] |

Chavez to Obama: I'd vote for you, and you for me Posted: 30 Sep 2012 11:27 AM PDT CARACAS (Reuters) - With both presidents facing tight re-election fights, Venezuela's Hugo Chavez gave a surprise endorsement to Barack Obama on Sunday - and said the U.S. leader no doubt felt the same. "I hope this doesn't harm Obama, but if I was from the United States, I'd vote for Obama," the socialist Chavez said of a man he first reached out to in 2009 but to whom he has since generally been insulting. Chavez is running for a new six-year term against opposition challenger Henrique Capriles, while Obama seeks re-election in November against Republican candidate Mitt Romney. ... |

Canada says it took Guantanamo detainee early after U.S. pressure Posted: 30 Sep 2012 11:49 AM PDT OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada, which allowed Guantanamo detainee Omar Khadr to be transferred to a prison in his homeland months earlier than expected, did so after pressure from the United States, Foreign Minister John Baird said on Sunday. Baird declined to comment on reports an angry Washington had insisted on Khadr's quick return after someone in Canada leaked a secret U.S. report on him. Khadr, 26, the youngest prisoner and last Westerner held in the Guantanamo military base, was sent back to Canada on Saturday to finish his sentence. ... |

Analysis: As fiscal cliff nears, markets ponder a rougher ride Posted: 30 Sep 2012 07:53 AM PDT NEW YORK (Reuters) - When it comes to deficit reduction, many investors would rather Congress "kick the can down the road" again than let 2013 start with a blast of fiscal austerity not seen since the Vietnam War. While hardly optimal, a temporary deal that prevents a plunge over the "fiscal cliff" would stave off recession and buy time for investors to tweak their portfolios. ... |

Paper: BP spill settlement talks stall as U.S. demands $18 bil Posted: 30 Sep 2012 06:04 AM PDT LONDON (Reuters) - Talks between BP and the U.S. government over a settlement for the 2010 oil spill have stalled because the U.S. is insisting that the British oil giant pay at least $18 billion, British newspaper the Sunday Times reported. A settlement deal may not happen until early next year, the newspaper quoted sources close to the company as saying. A settlement between $18 billion to $21 billion is near the level which BP would be required to pay should it be found grossly negligent under the Clean Water Act, said the paper. ... |
