Egypt: Heavy prison sentence for Islamist women Posted: 27 Nov 2013 02:06 PM PST CAIRO (AP) — Nearly two dozen Islamist women and girls, some as young as 15, were handed heavy prison sentences Wednesday for protesting in a court ruling that came a day after police beat and terrorized prominent female activists in a crackdown on secular demonstrators under a tough new anti-protest law. |

Egypt: Women protesters get heavy prison sentences Posted: 27 Nov 2013 10:58 AM PST CAIRO (AP) — Egyptian authorities on Wednesday took a heavy hand against both Islamist and secular opponents, handing down heavy prison sentences to a group of female supporters of the ousted Islamist president — including teenagers as young as 15 — and ordering the detention of two dozen secular activists, all for participating in protests. |

Politician picks resignation vs. recall Posted: 27 Nov 2013 01:08 PM PST A Colorado lawmaker facing a possible recall election over her support for gun control resigned on Wednesday in a move that will allow Democrats to appoint a successor and block Republicans from wresting control of the state Senate. The resignation of Evie Hudak, a former educator who represented Denver's northwest suburbs, comes after two other Democratic senators were unseated in September, leaving that party with a mere 18-17 majority in the state Senate. All three Democratic lawmakers were targeted for recall after they supported a package of laws to strengthen gun control following the mass shootings last year in a suburban Denver movie theater and at a Connecticut elementary school. Hudak said in a resignation letter that she was stepping down to spare taxpayers in her county from having to pay for a special election, after budgets have been slashed for mental health and senior citizen programs, among other services. |

49 dead in Iraq, 6,000 this year; country on brink of sectarian war Posted: 27 Nov 2013 09:43 AM PST Suicide bombings and other attacks killed 30 people in Iraq Wednesday, and authorities found the bodies of 19 others shot dead in Baghdad, scenes eerily reminiscent of the country's gruesome sectarian war. Most of the violence struck Baghdad and Sunni Arab areas of northern and western Iraq, which have borne the brunt of the months-long spike in bloodletting. Four suicide bombers detonated their explosives, but the carnage could have been much worse because security forces shot dead several would-be suicide attackers. Meanwhile, in two separate areas of the capital, police found the bodies of 14 men, all in their 20s or 30s, and all shot dead, medical officials said. |

Latvia prime minister resigns after deadly supermarket disaster Posted: 27 Nov 2013 06:13 AM PST Latvian Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis has resigned after the collapse last week of a supermarket roof in the capital Riga that killed more than 50 people, his spokesman said on Wednesday. The resignation throws into political turmoil a Baltic state that is due to join the eurozone in January and is seen as an example of fiscal prudence and economic recovery after a deep financial crisis in 2008. "I announce resigning from the post of prime minister, taking political responsibility for ... the tragedy," Dombrovskis told journalists, according to local news agency BNS. The prime minister's spokesman Martins Panke confirmed the resignation to Reuters. |
