'Then came the Beatles!' -- How one moment transformed lives Posted: 07 Feb 2014 11:01 AM PST Before the Beatles played six songs in two sets before 73 million Americans on the Feb. 9, 1964, Ed Sullivan Show, the secret was already out. The group's biggest hit at the moment — "I Want to Hold Your Hand" — was just leaked, played relentlessly on local radio and spread virally (before that was a thing) across the United States. |

International court to investigate Central African Republic crime allegations Posted: 07 Feb 2014 07:42 AM PST The International Criminal Court will open a preliminary examination into crimes allegedly committed during the conflict in the Central African Republic, the court's prosecutor said in a statement on Friday. "The plight of civilians in CAR since September 2012 has gone from bad to worse," said prosecutor Fatou Bensouda in a statement, adding that some victims of crimes, which included alleged killings and acts of rape and sexual slavery, appeared to have been singled out on religious grounds. The preliminary examination announced on Friday could proceed to a second investigation if prosecutors find evidence strong enough to justify it. |

Syria evacuates civilians from besieged Homs centre Posted: 07 Feb 2014 01:05 PM PST By Khaled Hariri HOMS, Syria (Reuters) - Syria evacuated 83 civilians on Friday who had lived under government siege in the devastated city of Homs for a year and a half, the first concrete result of talks launched two weeks ago to try to end the country's civil war. Buses ferried dozens of weary-looking evacuees, accompanied by the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, to a meeting point outside Homs where aid workers, soldiers and police were gathered. The World Food Programme said many appeared malnourished. "They were living on leaves and grass and olives and whatever they could find," WFP spokeswoman Elisabeth Byrs said. |

Leaked audio reveals embarrassing U.S. exchange on Ukraine, EU Posted: 06 Feb 2014 04:21 PM PST By Doina Chiacu and Arshad Mohammed WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A conversation between a State Department official and the U.S. ambassador to Ukraine that was posted on YouTube revealed an embarrassing exchange on U.S. strategy for a political transition in that country, including a crude American swipe at the European Union. The leaked conversation appeared certain to embarrass the United States and seemed designed to bolster charges - from Russia, among others - that the Ukrainian opposition is being manipulated by Washington, which President Barack Obama's administration strenuously disputes. |

White House giving Boehner room on immigration Posted: 07 Feb 2014 04:57 PM PST WASHINGTON (AP) — As Republican leaders dampen expectations for overhauling immigration laws this year, the White House is hoping that the GOP resistance is temporary and tactical, and it's resisting pressure from some political allies for President Barack Obama to take matters into his own hands and ease his administration's deportation record. |
