Obama applauds nomination of new Iraqi PM as "step forward"

Posted: 11 Aug 2014 04:58 PM PDT

U.S. President Obama delivers a statement on the situation in Iraq from his vacation compound at Martha's Vineyard, MassachusettsBy Jeff Mason CHILMARK Mass. (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama said on Monday Iraq had taken "a promising step forward" in designating a new prime minister, vowing to step up support for a new Iraqi government in a widening conflict that his administration had hoped to avoid. Speaking to reporters in the Massachusetts island of Martha's Vineyard, where he is vacationing with his family, Obama said Iraq had made important strides toward rebuffing fighters from the Islamic State, an al-Qaeda offshoot, since the United States authorized air strikes last week. "Today Iraq took a promising step forward in this critical effort," Obama said in brief remarks. Obama's comments and a congratulatory telephone call he made to Iraqi Prime Minister-designate Haider al-Abadi signal the administration's expectation, or hope, that Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki's 8-year-rule is all but over, even as Maliki shows no sign of relinquishing power.

U.S. can keep court orders, phone cos secret in NSA spy case

Posted: 11 Aug 2014 04:57 PM PDT

Former monitoring base of the NSA, which belongs to the German Federal Intelligence Agency (BND), is seen in Bad AiblingThe U.S. government need not turn over a secret surveillance court's orders or the names of phone companies helping it collect call records, because it might reveal methods needed to protect national security, a federal judge decided on Monday. U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in Oakland, California, rejected the Electronic Frontier Foundation's argument that the U.S. Department of Justice should turn over the materials, in the wake of unauthorized disclosures last year by a former National Security Agency contractor, Edward Snowden. The EFF noted that the government had already declassified hundreds of pages of other documents discussing data collection under the U.S. Patriot Act, including some that the data privacy advocacy group had requested. Rogers, though, said disclosing orders of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, which handles federal requests for surveillance warrants, could "provide a roadmap" for targets of national security investigations to evade surveillance.

The Swiss, who turned 33 last week, said that his 7-5, 7-6 (7/2) weekend finals loss in Toronto to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was a disappointment but also a huge chance to gather more information on the current state of his improving game, which is bolstered by a fearsome new racquet. While the Swiss missed out on his third title of the season after playing in seven finals, he did start putting the pieces in place as he begins as second seed at this week's final pre-grand slam tune-up, the Cincinnati Masters. "I'm overall pretty happy that I made the finals in my first tournament back on hard courts," Federer said after going down to Tsonga.
