U.S. Supreme Court rules for Muslim woman denied job at clothing store Posted: 01 Jun 2015 01:45 PM PDT By Lawrence Hurley WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday ruled in favor of a Muslim woman who sued for discrimination after being denied a sales job at age 17 at an Abercrombie & Fitch Co clothing store in Oklahoma because she wore a head scarf for religious reasons. In an 8-1 decision in the important religious rights case, the court backed Samantha Elauf, who had been rejected under Abercrombie's sales staff "look policy" after coming to her job interview wearing the head scarf, or hijab, used by many Muslim women. |
Colorado cinema gunman picked midnight movie because fewer children likely present Posted: 01 Jun 2015 01:41 PM PDT By Keith Coffman DENVER (Reuters) - A psychiatrist testified on Monday that Colorado theater gunman James Holmes chose a midnight screening of a movie to commit mass murder because he believed there would be fewer children present. Court-appointed psychiatrist William Reid, who made the comments during questioning by a prosecutor in a capital case now in its sixth week, said Holmes also indicated he was sorry when he learned a young girl was among the dead. "He said that he didn't want to kill children," Reid said Holmes told him of the late-night attack. |

Men brace for 'beard patrols' in Iraq's IS-held Mosul Posted: 01 Jun 2015 08:55 AM PDT The jihadist group has handed out leaflets in their stronghold of Mosul in recent weeks announcing that full beards become compulsory on June 1 and explaining why shaving is punishable. "I'm scared because they deal ruthlessly with anyone who opposes or ignores their instructions," he told AFP from Mosul, the de facto Iraqi capital of IS's self-proclaimed caliphate. Mosul is Iraq's second city and used to have a population of around two million before IS swept in a year ago and made it their main hub. |
