Kentucky clerk asks for delay in allowing gay marriage licenses Posted: 12 Sep 2015 11:28 AM PDT The county clerk from Kentucky who was jailed after refusing to issue marriage licenses to gay couples has asked an appeals court to let her continue her stand until a lawsuit against her is decided. Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis, due back at work Monday after six days behind bars, has said her beliefs as an Apostolic Christian prevent her from issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples and her attorneys have said the 49-year-old woman will not violate her conscience when she returns to work. In her absence, deputy clerks have been issuing licenses and have said they would continue to do so. |
Ex-tennis star Blake says New York cop should be fired for abuse Posted: 12 Sep 2015 12:34 PM PDT By Katie Reilly NEW YORK (Reuters) - Former professional tennis player James Blake said on Saturday that an undercover policeman who body-slammed him outside a Manhattan hotel in a case of mistaken identity did not deserve to wear an officer's badge, and he told CNN he should be fired for abusing his powers. Blake, who reached a career high of No. 4 in the world and retired two years ago, said he initially thought that it was someone rushing up to give him a hug "or something positive" as he waited alone for a car to take him to the U.S. Open for corporate appearances. Blake is black and the New York City Police Department officer, James Frascatore, is white. |
Person of interest in Arizona shootings not 'prime suspect' Posted: 12 Sep 2015 03:08 PM PDT State troopers detained Oscar De La Torre Munoz, of Avondale, Arizona, on Friday at a Phoenix-area gas station along with a woman who was later released. Bart Graves, a spokesman for the state's department of public safety, said De La Torre Munoz is not considered the prime suspect by authorities probing 11 possible vehicle shootings since Aug. 29 on a roughly 10-mile (16-km) stretch of Interstate 10 where it runs through the Phoenix metro area. |
