Woman killed, 400 homes destroyed by California wildfire Posted: 14 Sep 2015 03:24 PM PDT By Curtis Skinner LAKEPORT, Calif. (Reuters) - A Northern California wildfire ranked as the most destructive to hit the drought-stricken U.S. West this year has killed one woman and burned some 400 homes to the ground, fire officials said on Monday, and they expect the property toll to climb. The so-called Valley Fire erupted on Saturday and spread quickly to a cluster of small communities in the hills and valleys north of Napa County's wine-producing region, forcing the evacuation of thousands of residents. Evacuated residents recounted chaotic ordeals of having to flee their homes through gauntlets of flame. |
Kentucky clerk won't block, or authorize, gay marriage licenses Posted: 14 Sep 2015 12:01 PM PDT By Steve Bittenbender MOREHEAD, Ky. (Reuters) - The county clerk from Kentucky who was jailed after refusing to issue marriage licenses to gay couples said Monday on her return to work she will not block her deputies from issuing them but will not authorize them personally, as one couple celebrated a coming marriage. Shannon and Carmen Wampler-Collins received a marriage license late Monday morning from a deputy clerk as friends and family gathered in the clerk's office chanted "love has won" and demonstrators opposed to gay marriage shouted in the background. Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis, who has said her beliefs as an Apostolic Christian prevent her from issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, was jailed for five days earlier this month for refusing to comply with a judge's order to issue licenses in line with a Supreme Court ruling in June that made gay marriage legal across the United States. |
Teachers' strike to keep Seattle schools closed Tuesday Posted: 14 Sep 2015 04:30 PM PDT Seattle's 53,000 public school students will be idled for a fifth day on Tuesday by a citywide teachers' strike after a marathon round of weekend contract talks between the union and school district failed to produce a settlement. Negotiations were set to resume on Monday afternoon, before striking teachers who had been walking picket lines at city high schools marched to district headquarters for a rally that coincided with the announcement of no classes on Tuesday. "I understand a lot of people are getting frustrated, and this seems to keep going," Stacy Howard, spokeswoman for Seattle Public Schools, told a news conference. |

Mexico slams Egypt 'air strike' after tourists killed Posted: 14 Sep 2015 01:53 PM PDT Mexico called on Egypt Monday to swiftly investigate why tourists were mistakenly targeted in what witnesses described as an air strike that left at least two Mexicans dead and six unaccounted for. President Enrique Pena Nieto said 14 Mexicans were among those involved in Sunday's "grave incident" in the Western Desert. Egyptian authorities said security forces mistakenly killed 12 people and wounded 10 others when they struck their convoy while chasing jihadists, but they have not given details about the weaponry used or the breakdown of victims. |
NFL 2015 campaign off to bruising start Posted: 13 Sep 2015 06:45 PM PDT It was a bone and brain jarring opening Sunday in the NFL as the first full day of 2015 saw a spate of concussions, including a scary injury to New York Jets rookie Lorenzo Mauldin. Jets coach Todd Bowles acknowledged after his team's 31-10 win over the Cleveland Browns that he was "very worried" about the injuries that sent Mauldin to the hospital after he was caught under a pile of players during a scramble for a loose ball. "You just hope he's not seriously hurt," Bowles said after the game, when he was still awaiting word on the nature and gravity of the injuries. |
