President Obama drinks the water in Flint Posted: 04 May 2016 12:47 PM PDT Barack Obama traveled to Flint, Mich., on Wednesday to meet with local and federal officials to discuss the water crisis there — and to reassure families that his administration is doing everything it can to make the water in Flint safe to drink. To help illustrate his point, Obama drank from a glass of filtered water during a press briefing at the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, which has become a hub for the response to the water crisis. "Generally, I haven't been doing stunts, but here you go," Obama said as he took a small sip of the water. |
US government: North Carolina LGBT law violates civil rights Posted: 04 May 2016 03:09 PM PDT A North Carolina law limiting protections to LGBT people violates federal civil rights protections and can't be enforced, the U.S. Justice Department said Wednesday, putting the state on notice that it is in danger of being sued and losing hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funding. In a letter to Gov. Pat McCrory, the Justice Department said federal officials view the state law as violating federal Civil Rights Act protections barring workplace discrimination based on sex. Provisions of the state law directed at transgender state employees violate their anti-discrimination protections, the letter said. |

Obama sips Flint water, urges children be tested for lead Posted: 04 May 2016 03:53 PM PDT By Timothy Gardner FLINT, Mich. (Reuters) - President Barack Obama sipped filtered water in Flint, Michigan, on Wednesday and assured angry residents that their children would be fine in the long term despite the "complete screw-up" that contaminated their drinking water with lead. Obama made the trip to the mostly African-American community to demonstrate that the water there was safe even as he predicted it would take more than two years to replace the city's aging pipes. Flint, with a population of about 100,000, was under control of a state-appointed emergency manager in 2014 when it switched its water source from Detroit's municipal system to the Flint River to save money. |
Attorney: Prince arranged to meet addiction doctor Posted: 04 May 2016 11:49 AM PDT The day before Prince died, his representatives reached out to a California doctor who specializes in addiction treatment to arrange a meeting, a Minneapolis lawyer for the doctor said Wednesday. Attorney William Mauzy said Dr. Howard Kornfeld had never met or spoken to Prince before Prince's representatives contacted him on April 20 with the musician's knowledge. Mauzy, confirming details first reported by the Minneapolis Star Tribune, said Kornfeld wasn't able to travel immediately to Minnesota, so he arranged for his son Andrew to go instead. |

Indiana landslide knocks Cruz out of race Posted: 03 May 2016 07:54 PM PDT NEW YORK—Donald Trump scored a landslide victory in Indiana's Republican presidential primary Tuesday, dealing a knockout blow to Texas Sen. John Kasich, whose advisers said he would continue to campaign. "It's been an unbelievable day and evening and year," Trump told reporters at an election night event at Trump Tower. |

When Cruz finished speaking, the group of about 50 people applauded — several of them wiping away tears — and Cruz's campaign manager, Jeff Roe, walked away from them, looking down, and shook his head. With a few neighborhoods already in ruins, worsening fire conditions Wednesday pushed walls of flames towards thousands of more homes in the northeastern Alberta town, in the heart of Canada's oil sands region.
