Audi officially unveils cutting edge E-Tron Sportback EV with 311 miles of range Posted: 18 Apr 2017 09:31 AM PDT Following in the footsteps of Tesla and other automakers who are increasingly embracing the EV revolution, Audi today officially unveiled its E-tron Sportback at the Shanghai motor show. That Audi is eyeing the EV space intently shouldn't come as much of a surprise. Just last year, Audi CEO Rupert Stadler reportedly gave engineers the green-light to develop a car capable of giving Tesla a run for its money.
Now the Audi E-tron Sportback is just a concept for now, but company spokespeople say the car will likely make its way into production sometime in 2019. Not surprisingly, the E-tron Sportback features some compelling specs that aren't too far off from some of the rumors we heard a little less than a year ago. Featuring a 95 kWh battery pack, the Sportback has a 0-60 MPH time in the 4.5 second range and clearly isn't anywhere close to being as fast as a Tesla Model S. Still, the Sportback shines in other ways. Impressively, Audi's EV boasts a range of 311 miles which is more or less on par with Tesla's flagship Model S P100D. As for other details, the car boats a touchscreen display in the central console and some interesting lighting innovations.
Motor1 adds that the E-tron Sportback has upwards of 250 LEDs to the left and right of the grille which can "form different lighting patterns as a way to communicate with the other cars on the road." Some additional promo shots of the car can be seen below. An exterior shot of the car can be seen below. |
Medical guidelines may mean millions miss out on life-saving drugs Posted: 18 Apr 2017 12:37 PM PDT By Andrew M. Seaman (Reuters Health) - More than nine million people may miss out on cholesterol-lowering drugs that prevent heart attacks and strokes if doctors choose one set of medical guidelines over another, according to a new study. "I would say we're still searching for the perfect guidelines," said lead author Michael Pencina, of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. The 2013 ACC/AHA guidelines recommend statins for people ages 40 to 75 with at least a 7.5 percent risk of having a heart attack or stroke in the next 10 years. |

Venezuela braces for 'mother of all protests' Posted: 19 Apr 2017 12:36 AM PDT Venezuela braced for rival demonstrations Wednesday for and against President Nicolas Maduro, whose push to tighten his grip on power has triggered waves of deadly unrest that have escalated the country's political and economic crisis. Maduro's opponents are vowing to stage the "mother of all protests" calling for his ouster, after two weeks of violent demonstrations that have left five people dead and dozens wounded. Sowing fears of more violence, Maduro has in turn urged his supporters, along with the military and civilian militias, to defend the leftist "revolution" launched by his predecessor Hugo Chavez in 1999. |

It will mean the largest number of drug cases tossed out in U.S. history due to one person, according to the American Civil Liberties Union. Nigeria's Buhari suspends key aides over alleged graft Posted: 19 Apr 2017 07:26 AM PDT Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday suspended two key aides over an alleged contract scam and for keeping an unauthorised stash of cash in a private home, his office said. Buhari "has ordered an investigation into the allegations of violations of law and due process made against the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr David Babachir Lawal, in the award of contracts" in the north-east, the presidency said in a statement. Last year, Lawal, a top-ranking member of the administration and a Buhari confidant, was alleged to have awarded contracts running into millions of naira to companies in which he had interests, within the Presidential Initiative on the North East (PINE). |
Starbucks unicorn frappuccinos to grace Earth for a limited time Posted: 18 Apr 2017 10:45 AM PDT Usually rumors are just rumors, but this time they have proven true. Starbucks has confirmed that the Unicorn Frappuccino is making its way to the chain's menu from April 19-23 in U.S., Canada, and Mexico. In the press release, Starbucks explains that the drink is made "with a sweet dusting of pink powder blended into a crème Frappuccino with mango syrup, and layered with a pleasantly sour blue powder topping." SEE ALSO: 'Dumb Starbucks' Serves Up Piping Hot Mystery in L.A. Image: starbucksStarbucks promises that the drink will have the opposite effect of a Sour Patch Kid. First it will be "sweet and fruity," but stirring the drink will change the flavor to "tangy and tart." The announcement is exciting, but it probably would have had more of an impact if Starbucks baristas everywhere hadn't spoiled the announcement by posting about the Unicorn Frappuccino early on social media. The rumors first started last week when baristas posted pictures of the pink and blue powders to Reddit and speculated on what they were. Since then, baristas have started making the drink and posting their results online, as well as otherwise taking over the job of Starbucks PR. The rumors are true! Uganda begins winding down operation against Lord's Resistance Army Posted: 19 Apr 2017 05:59 AM PDT By Elias Biryabarema KAMPALA (Reuters) - The Ugandan military said on Wednesday it has begun withdrawing troops from Central African Republic where it had been pursuing rebel leader Joseph Kony and his Lord's Resistance Army, saying it has accomplished its mission - although Kony remains at large. Uganda has been leading a U.S.-supported African Union regional task force tracking the LRA and Kony, who has been indicted by the Hague-based International Criminal Court. For nearly two decades the rebels battled the government of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni from bases in the north of the country and across the border in what is now South Sudan. |

Apple said to be building 100M new iPhones as Samsung strives for 60M Galaxy S8s Posted: 19 Apr 2017 11:40 AM PDT Apple is working on three new iPhones this year, with the iPhone 8 expected to bring over a variety of novel features according to many reports. Those features should include a full-screen design, wireless charging, and next-generation augmented reality capabilities. According to a new report from Asia, chip suppliers will start stocking parts for the upcoming iPhones in the second quarter and will accelerate production towards the end of the quarter.
According to Digitimes, chip demand for Apple's next iPhones will exceed 50 million sets per quarter during the second half of the year. If accurate, Apple may produce more than 100 million new iPhones, including iPhone 8, iPhone 7s, and iPhone 7s Plus this year. The report notes that total iPhone sales might hit a total of 220 million to 230 million units. That estimate is only for the 2017 iPhones, which is an impressive number, considering that Apple will probably continue to sell the iPhone SE and iPhone 7 series alongside the upcoming devices. Samsung, meanwhile, reportedly has an internal sales target of 60 million new Galaxy S8 and S8+ handsets, combined. The report notes that TSMC will make the A11 chip that will power all 2017 iPhones. The foundry is expected to ramp up production in the second half of the year, and the 10nm node should account for about 10% of its wafer sales during the six-month period. Other chips suppliers that are said to be making parts for the iPhone include ADI, Broadcom, Cirrus Logic, Cypress, NXP, Qualcomm, STMicroelectronics, and TI. Apple may be getting ready to mass produce more than 100 million iPhones this year, but more and more reports say the iPhone 8 will see significant delays, as Apple is experiencing manufacturing issues with certain technologies like the in-screen fingerprint scanner. |
