1992 ‘Rodney King riots' – A look back at L.A. in flames Posted: 28 Apr 2017 09:08 AM PDT The 1992 Los Angeles riots began on April 29, 1992, after the acquittal of four LAPD police officers on trial for the beating of motorist Rodney King. Video of his treatment after a March 3, 1991, traffic stop drew international attention. Civil unrest, which included violence and looting, broke out on the streets of Los Angeles. |
Sheryl Sandberg's mother-in-law stuns her by encouraging her to remarry Posted: 27 Apr 2017 02:05 PM PDT While Sheryl Sandberg and her mother-in-law, Paula Goldberg, were cleaning out Dave Goldberg's closet after he passed away, Goldberg said something that stunned Sandberg. "You are not only going to live, but you are going to get remarried one day — and I am going to be there to celebrate with you," she said. |

Detainees found in 'secret cell' in Philippines: rights group Posted: 27 Apr 2017 09:34 PM PDT A dozen people have been found stuffed inside a closet-sized cell hidden behind a book shelf in a Philippine police station, triggering further alarm about abuse under President Rodrigo Duterte's deadly war on drugs. Members of the government's human rights commission, accompanied by journalists, found the men and women in a surprise visit to the station in the heart of Manila's slum area on Thursday evening. |
Donald Trump reveals who he thinks will run against him for president in 2020 using racial slur Posted: 28 Apr 2017 11:20 AM PDT Donald Trump has said he thinks his 2020 presidential opponent will be liberal Senator Elizabeth Warren, during a speech made to the NRA in Atlanta. The president made the prediction at a speech to the National Rifle Association, referring to the senator by a nickname he gave her last year that some say is racially insensitive. "It may be Pocahontas," Mr Trump said before noting that Ms Warren isn't a big fan of the NRA. |
U.S. says time to act on North Korea, China says not up to Beijing alone Posted: 28 Apr 2017 02:08 PM PDT By Michelle Nichols and Lesley Wroughton UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson warned on Friday that failure to curb North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs could lead to 'catastrophic consequences,' while China and Russia rebuked Washington's threat of military force. The showdown in a meeting of the U.N. Security Council on North Korea highlighted the diplomatic challenges of resolving tensions over Pyongyang, with the Trump administration aggressively pressing Beijing to rein in its ally, and China and Russia pushing back against Washington's rhetoric. |

On Wednesday, the WHO said Liberian health authorities were taking rapid precautionary steps after eight people died of a mystery illness, 10 months after the end of a two-year Ebola virus outbreak. "It seems all of these people were attending the funeral of a religious leader," WHO spokeswoman Fadela Chaib told a briefing in Geneva. |

Andmesh’s cool elastomer cases are finally available for the iPhone 7 Plus Posted: 28 Apr 2017 12:44 PM PDT We've covered Andmesh's elastomer iPhone cases a few times before here on the site. They're like no other cases out there, both in terms of their design and the material they're made from. Elastomer is a cool rubbery substance that's harder than silicone but still flexible and grippy. The pattern is another unique aspect, with a cool design that spreads different sized holes across the back of the phone. It still covers your iPhone, but you can still see the Apple logo through the case. Andmesh makes its cases for a bunch of different iPhone models, but it hasn't ever made one for the iPhone 7 Plus… until now. If you're looking for a cool and original case that protects your phone as well, definitely give the Andmesh Elastomer iPhone 7 Plus Case a shot. Here are the highlights from the product page:

Sweden truck attack death toll rises to five Posted: 28 Apr 2017 04:06 AM PDT The death toll from the Stockholm truck attack rose to five on Friday after a 60-year-old Swedish woman succumbed to her injuries, police said. An Uzbek suspect has confessed to using a stolen truck to mow down pedestrians on a busy shopping street in central Stockholm on April 7 in a rampage similar to attacks in Nice, Berlin and London. Rakhmat Akilov, a 39-year-old Uzbek national who was arrested a few hours after the attack, has confessed to driving the truck. |
We asked Trump voters what they think about his first 100 days – and if they have any regrets Posted: 27 Apr 2017 10:36 AM PDT Like the majority of people who sent Donald Trump to the White House, Lorraine Ostrowski has no regrets. While Mr Trump's national approval rating is lower than that of any modern president, a recent Washington Post-ABC News survey found that among those who voted for him, just 2 per cent said they had made a mistake. Indeed, despite controversies ranging from Mr Trump's Muslim travel ban, his campaign's alleged links to Russia and the apparently often chaotic nature of his administration, when The Independent visited Macomb County, it found not a single Trump voter who wished for a do-over. |

6 Hidden Gems in Utah's National Parks Posted: 28 Apr 2017 07:08 AM PDT Utah's Zion and Bryce Canyon national parks illustrate the diverse terrain and geological splendors of America's top national parks. "Millions of people visit Zion, but relatively few go exploring into the park's secret places," says Janice Holly Booth, author of the book "Only Pack What You Can Carry: My Path to Inner Strength, Confidence and True Self Knowledge," a book published by National Geographic. Instead of hiking on the popular trails with the masses and venturing to well-traversed parks like the iconic Arches National Park, immerse yourself in the backcountry and remote spots to enjoy seclusion and stunning scenery. |
How North Korea gets its oil from China: lifeline in question at U.N. meeting Posted: 28 Apr 2017 03:58 AM PDT By Chen Aizhu BEIJING (Reuters) - As the United Nations Security Council decides whether to tighten the sanctions screws on North Korea, the country's increasingly isolated government could lose a lifeline provided by state-owned China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC). For decades, the Chinese oil giant has sent small cargoes of jet fuel, diesel and gasoline from two large refineries in the northeastern city of Dalian and other nearby plants across the Yellow Sea to North Korea's western port of Nampo, five sources familiar with the business told Reuters. |

Abbas turns screw on Hamas by cutting Gaza's electricity Posted: 27 Apr 2017 05:33 AM PDT By Nidal al-Mughrabi GAZA (Reuters) - With the prospect looming of a Middle East peace initiative by a new U.S. administration more sympathetic to Israel, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has decided to turn the screw on the Hamas group that has kept Gaza out of his control for a decade. Abbas's Western-backed Palestinian Authority (PA) on Thursday told Israel it would no longer pay for the electricity Israel supplies to Gaza, a move that could lead to a complete power shutdown in the territory, whose 2 million people already endure blackouts for much of the day. |
Posted: 28 Apr 2017 02:17 AM PDT The argument that even an "immaterial" error on official paperwork can justify deportation, put forward by the Trump administration in a recent Supreme Court case, would be sufficient to deport the President's wife, Melania. The First Lady of the United States reportedly failed to disclose earnings from nearly two months of illegal work in the USA on a visitor's visa, and subsequently failed to mention the offence on immigration documents. A Serbian woman was recently deported for failing to disclose her husband's history in the military, thus setting a technical precedent for deporting Ms Trump, as Slate reports. |
French tourist attacked by shark in New Zealand Posted: 26 Apr 2017 11:26 PM PDT A French tourist survived a rare shark attack in New Zealand on Thursday, suffering only moderate injuries, rescuers and locals said. The woman, aged in her 20s, was bodyboarding in the afternoon at Curio Bay in the South Island when the shark attacked her leg, St John Ambulance said. Nick Smart, who runs the Caitlin Surf School, said the woman was in the water with friends when the shark attacked "out of nowhere". |

Can the Hennessey Exorcist drive out the Dodge Demon? Posted: 28 Apr 2017 02:28 AM PDT Texas tuner extraordinaire Hennessey Performance wants to give anyone considering snapping up the new Dodge Challenger SRT Demon cause for concern. At the New York International Auto Show, Dodge confounded expectations with an 840hp street-legal drag car called the Demon. Based on the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and set to be offered as either a full turnkey car or as a conversion for existing ZL1 owners, the Exorcist has a totally overhauled engine complete with ported cylinder heads, new valves, a new camshaft, a high-flow supercharger, plus new exhaust system. |

China welcomes U.S. saying it is open to talks on North Korea Posted: 27 Apr 2017 09:19 AM PDT By Michael Martina and Ju-min Park BEIJING/SEOUL (Reuters) - China on Thursday welcomed an apparently softer tone by the United States on the North Korean nuclear and missile crisis but stressed its opposition to a U.S. missile defence system being deployed in South Korea. Separately, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called on North Korea and other countries on Thursday to avoid behaviour or rhetoric that could increase tensions around Pyongyang's nuclear programme. Speaking at a news conference in Moscow after talks, the two leaders said they had agreed to cooperate closely to try to help defuse tensions around North Korea. |
This 7-year-old girl wrote a letter to Google and got a tech job out of it Posted: 28 Apr 2017 10:39 AM PDT How about this amazing little nugget to restore your faith in humanity: Chloe Bridgewater, a seven-year-old from Hereford, UK, is a big fan of technology and eventually wants to work for Google. Rather than wasting any time, she decided to send Google CEO Sundar Pichai a letter to let him know that she's planning on working there one day. She got two things in return: A lovely letter from Pichai encouraging her to follow her dreams, and a paid job testing tech products for a tech startup based in London. "Dear Google boss," Young Bridgewater's letter begins. "May name is Chloe and when I am bigger I would like a job with Google." She goes on to explain that she's also planning on swimming in the Olympics and working at a chocolate factory, because what kid doesn't dream of that? Her love of Google centers around its work culture, which includes kid-friendly bonuses like working from a bean bag or making your way from one floor of the company's headquarters to another via slide. After her father posted a photo of her letter online it quickly went viral, catching the attention of Kano, the built-it-yourself computer startup that crushed its crowdfunding goals back in late 2013 and has been shipping its kits ever since. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1V0qlI28Usc Now, the 7-year-old and her younger sister, Hollie, help Kano test new products ahead of time, giving the company feedback on what works and what doesn't. The two girls were even added as board members of Kano's product innovation board. See? The world isn't all bad. |
Venezuela snubs regional powers as more die in unrest Posted: 26 Apr 2017 07:19 PM PDT Venezuela says it is quitting the Organization of American States in anger at pressure from the bloc over the government's handling of a deadly political crisis. The announcement late Wednesday raised international tension over Venezuela, where unrest has left 28 people dead this month. Echoed by the United States and European Union, the OAS has led an international chorus of concern over the economic and political chaos in the major oil-exporting country. |
