In testing missile, N. Korea challenges South's new leader Posted: 14 May 2017 06:22 AM PDT SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea on Sunday test-launched a ballistic missile that flew for half an hour and reached an unusually high altitude before landing in the Sea of Japan, the South Korean, Japanese and U.S. militaries said. The launch, which Tokyo said could be of a new type of missile, is a direct challenge to the new South Korean president and comes as U.S., Japanese and European navies gather for joint war games in the Pacific. |

Fast-moving cyberattacks wreak havoc worldwide Posted: 12 May 2017 09:38 PM PDT A fast-moving wave of cyberattacks swept the globe Friday, apparently exploiting a flaw exposed in documents leaked from the US National Security Agency. The attacks -- which experts said affected dozens of countries -- used a technique known as ransomware that locks users' files unless they pay the attackers a designated sum in the virtual currency Bitcoin. Affected by the onslaught were computer networks at hospitals in Britain, Russia's interior ministry, the Spanish telecom giant Telefonica and the US delivery firm FedEx and many other organizations. |
Pope says will be 'sincere' with Trump at Vatican meeting Posted: 13 May 2017 09:39 PM PDT By Philip Pullella ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE (Reuters) - Pope Francis said on Saturday he would be "sincere" with U.S. President Donald Trump over their sharp differences on subjects such as immigration and climate change when the two hold their first meeting at the Vatican later this month. "Even if one thinks differently we have to be very sincere about what each one thinks," Francis said in a typically freewheeling airborne news conference. |

Renault stopped production at several sites earlier on Saturday to prevent the spread of the cyber attack. "Part of Dacia's production in Mioveni has been affected by disfunctionalities of IT systems and some employees were sent back home," Dacia said in a statement. |

Designer Carolina Herrera laments murder of nephew in Venezuela Posted: 13 May 2017 11:45 AM PDT Venezuela-born fashion designer Carolina Herrera on Saturday lamented the killing of her nephew in the crisis-torn country, in what authorities called an apparent kidnapping. State prosecutors said the bodies of businessmen Reinaldo Herrera, 34, and Fabrizio Mendoza, 31, were found late on Thursday in a vehicle abandoned along the highway connecting Caracas to the Caribbean coast. "Our only hope is that the tragic assassination of our young nephew, Reinaldo and his colleague, Fabrizio will serve to mitigate the terrible carnage and murders that are committed against our youth in Venezuela," Herrera, 78, wrote on the Instagram account of her fashion label. |

Days after Mr Trump fired James Comey as FBI Director, Senator Lindsey Graham said it was essential to get to the bottom of what was said between the President and the former top federal investigator. Mr Graham spoke after Mr Trump claimed Mr Comey had told him on three occasions – once over dinner – that he was not personally under investigation. |

Pope cheered in Fatima to honor children who urged peace Posted: 12 May 2017 06:04 PM PDT FATIMA, Portugal (AP) — Pope Francis urged Catholics on Friday to "tear down all walls" and spread peace as he traveled to this Portuguese shrine town to mark the 100th anniversary of one of the most unique events of the 20th-century Catholic Church: the visions of the Virgin Mary reported by three illiterate shepherd children and the "secrets" she told them. |
China's Xi calls for greater counter-terrorism cooperation with Turkey Posted: 13 May 2017 06:23 PM PDT Chinese President Xi Jinping has told his Turkish counterpart Tayyip Erdogan that the two should deepen counter-terrorism cooperation, amid Chinese concern about ethnic Uighurs from its Xinjiang region fighting with militants in the Middle East. Uighurs are a largely Muslim, Turkic-speaking minority from China's western Xinjiang region. Hundreds, possibly thousands, keen to escape unrest in Xinjiang, have traveled clandestinely via Southeast Asia to Turkey, where many see themselves as sharing religious and cultural ties. |

MacMall’s new sale slashes up to 30% off everything you can think of… except Macs Posted: 13 May 2017 10:15 AM PDT The name "MacMall" obviously hearkens back to the retailer's origins, when it primarily sold... you guessed it... Macs. Apple computers and other Apple products are still a core part of the company's business, of course, and you'll always find prices on Apple gear that are lower than what you would pay even if you buy directly from Apple. But MacMall has grown a lot in the past few years, and the company's weekend-long sale on new arrivals is a perfect reminder of the wide range of products MacMall now sells. This weekend only, MacMall is slashing prices up to 30% on a wide range of new arrivals. From Chromebooks and Windows laptops to desktops, monitors, projectors, external hard drives, printers, headphones, tablets, VR headsets, Nest Cam bundles, software and everything in between, this big MacMall sale covers just about anything and everything you can think of. Well, except for Macs. Here are some examples of the deals you'll find at MacMall right now:

Snap earnings 'miss' shows misreading of analyst 'expectations' Posted: 13 May 2017 04:26 AM PDT By David Ingram SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A widespread view on Wall Street this week was that Snap Inc fell short of revenue forecasts when it posted its first quarterly results as a public company, triggering a big selloff in its shares. In fact there were two distinct camps of forecasters, which suggests the earnings "miss" was a matter of interpretation, and other factors were behind the stock decline. A Reuters review of 19 predictions heading into Snap's earnings report on Wednesday shows that analysts affiliated with the underwriters of Snap's initial public offering in March had far lower revenue expectations than investment firms not involved in the IPO. |
Merkel's party bags key victory in bellwether state vote Posted: 14 May 2017 10:50 AM PDT Düsseldorf (Germany) (AFP) - Chancellor Angela Merkel dealt a devastating blow to her main rival on Sunday, four months before national elections, when early results showed her party securing a strong win in a regional vote in Germany's biggest state. The SPD only managed to garner 30.6 percent, its worst score in history in the state and sharply down from its 2012 showing of 39.1 percent, in a serious hit to confidence ahead of general elections in September. |

Pope Francis prays for Yazidis as Iraqi troops advance in Mosul Posted: 14 May 2017 05:15 AM PDT Pope Francis called attention on Sunday to the plight of people affected by war and conflict in the Middle East as U.S.-backed forces close in on Islamic State militants in Iraq. "So many innocent people are being sorely tested, be they Christian, or Muslim, or from minority groups like the Yazidi, who are suffering tragic violence and discrimination," Francis said after his regular Sunday address in the Vatican. "I encourage the different communities to follow the path of dialogue and friendship, to build a future of respect, security and peace, far from any sort of war." The battle for Mosul, the densely populated northern Iraqi city that Islamic State made its de facto capital, was approaching an end on Sunday after seven months of grueling combat. |

More leaks show the OnePlus 5 will have one crucial feature Posted: 12 May 2017 08:01 PM PDT The Galaxy S8 is finally available in stores, but the OnePlus 5 is one of the mostly hotly-anticipated Android phones right now. The handset will be launched this summer, OnePlus already confirmed, while a slew of reports already revealed almost everything there is to know about the handset. We still don't know what the phone will look like, and reports offer conflicting details regarding one of its most important features. But there's a new leak that might settle it.
The OnePlus 5 is expected to feature a dual lens rear camera on the back, although it's unclear whether it'll have a horizontal or vertical orientation. A series of images posted on SlashLeaks indicate the camera will have two lenses and will be placed vertically, in a central location. The flash is positioned under the camera, and it's followed by the OnePlus logo. One other detail to note is that there's no fingerprint sensor on the back. That means it's positioned on the front side of the handset, probably just below the display. SlashLeaks posted four images that show various proposals for the rear camera and antenna lines design. Aside from the minor camera, flash, and antenna differences, the renders show the same overall design for the handset. It's unclear at this time which one will be chosen as the final design, and that's assuming these leaked renders have indeed leaked from OnePlus. A render for the front side of the handset isn't available, but here are the images posted on SlashLeaks: |

China says all welcome at Silk Road forum after U.S. complains over North Korea Posted: 13 May 2017 01:37 AM PDT By Ben Blanchard BEIJING (Reuters) - China welcomes all countries to a forum this weekend on China's new Silk Road plan, the foreign ministry said on Saturday, after the United States warned China that North Korea's attendance could affect other countries' participation. Two sources with knowledge of the situation said the U.S. embassy in Beijing had submitted a diplomatic note to China's foreign ministry, saying inviting North Korea sent the wrong message at a time when the world was trying to pressure it over its repeated missile and nuclear tests. |
Wal-Mart pushing hard to catch Amazon in e-commerce Posted: 14 May 2017 10:23 AM PDT Wal-Mart Stores, the 800-pound gorilla of retail, is running hard to catch up in an increasingly crucial segment where it is neither the biggest nor the best: e-commerce. The company, founded in 1962 by Sam Walton, has been gobbling up smaller and niche players in e-commerce in an effort to reach online shopping market leader Amazon. Whether those efforts are paying off will be a focal point when Wal-Mart Stores reports quarterly earnings on Thursday. |

U.S. lawmakers ask Trump to turn over any Comey tapes Posted: 14 May 2017 01:20 PM PDT By Ayesha Rascoe WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. lawmakers on Sunday called on President Donald Trump to turn over any tapes of conversations with fired FBI chief James Comey, potentially setting up a showdown with the White House as Democrats considered a boycott of the vote on Comey's replacement. In a highly unusual move, Trump last week appeared to suggest on Twitter that he might have tapes of conversations with Comey and warned the former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation against talking to the media. |
Android O could solve Android’s biggest problem Posted: 12 May 2017 06:03 PM PDT For all of Android's strengths, there's one area where it has dramatically lagged behind iOS: updates. Fragmentation is arguably Android's biggest problem, but in a post on the Android Developers Blog this Friday, Google revealed a new feature in Android O that will supposedly "make it easier, faster and less costly for manufacturers to update devices to a new version of Android."
Google says that the new feature, dubbed Project Treble, represents "the biggest change to the low-level system architecture of Android to date." As it stands, a lot of code has to be rewritten across Android before a given vendor can update its devices to the latest version of the software. With Project Treble, vendors will be able to roll out Android updates without having to wait for chip manufacturers such as Qualcomm to modify the code to work with their chips. The entire process will be streamlined so that vendors can get Android 8.0 (and beyond) in the hands of consumers more quickly than they've been able to in the past. That's what Google is promising, anyway. Google has not been blind to the fragmentation issue over the past several years. The company has ensured Android users on multiple occasions that it's working on solutions, but considering that just 7.1% of users are on Android 7.0 Nougat while nearly 20% are still on Android 4.4 KitKat, the success on this front has clearly been limited up to this point. Google says that Project Treble is already running on the Android O Developer Preview for Pixel phones, but we'll have to wait until the new version of Android begins rolling out to judge its efficacy. |
