More troops deployed as Canada braces for worse flooding Posted: 08 May 2017 12:21 AM PDT With heavy rains persisting and waters still rising over much of waterlogged eastern Canada, the nation's military tripled the number of troops urgently working to evacuate thousands of residents. Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre declared a state of emergency for his city, allowing authorities to order mandatory evacuations from threatened areas. "The next 48 hours will be decisive," Coderre told reporters. |

Posted: 08 May 2017 01:40 AM PDT A organisation of atheists from Wisconsin has filed a lawsuit challenging the president's so-called "religious liberty" order, claiming his move to allow religious groups to preach politics from the pulpit is in breach of the constitution. The Freedom from Religion Foundation (FFRF), established in 1978, said recent comments by Mr Trump were a clear attempt to roll-back the provisions of the Johnson Amendment, a 1954 law that prohibits all tax-exempt institutions from campaigning for political candidates. Religious liberty is enshrined in the First Amendment of our Constitution as a founding principle of our nation. |

John Oliver calls on the internet to save itself by flooding the FCC with comments Posted: 08 May 2017 07:59 AM PDT As the new FCC Chairman Ajit Pai plans to take a "weed whacker" to net neutrality regulations, John Oliver asked internet commenters everywhere for their help on Sunday. To give users an easy way to voice their displeasure of Pai's plan to repeal the classification of the internet as a common carrier, he's taken out the domain name gofccyourself.com, which is a direct link to the site to send comments. So many comments flooded in that, by Sunday, it appeared that the site was already overloaded. Back in 2014 when the FCC was considering new net neutrality rules, Oliver called for the same kind of action from his viewers on Last Week Tonight. The FCC's website crashed, Oliver's segment brought unprecedented attention to the issue, and the commission decided to reclassify internet service as a common carrier. Watch Oliver slam Pai, explain and defend net neutrality, and patriotically address Reddit commenters, Yelpers, and his own haters in this segment from Last Week Tonight. |
Nigeria exchanges 82 Chibok girls kidnapped by Boko Haram for prisoners Posted: 07 May 2017 01:23 AM PDT By Felix Onuah and Ahmed Kingimi ABUJA/MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (Reuters) - Boko Haram militants have released 82 schoolgirls out of a group of more than 200 whom they kidnapped from the northeastern town of Chibok three years ago in exchange for prisoners, the presidency said on Saturday. Around 270 girls were kidnapped in April 2014 by the Islamist militant group, which has killed 15,000 people and displaced more than two million during a seven-year insurgency aimed at creating an Islamic caliphate in northeastern Nigeria. Nigeria thanked Switzerland and the International Committee of the Red Cross for helping secure the release of the 82 girls after "lengthy negotiations", the presidency said in a statement. |

Erdogan says US debates over Jerusalem embassy move 'wrong' Posted: 08 May 2017 09:36 AM PDT Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday said debates over the possibility of moving the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem are "extremely wrong" and should be dropped. US President Donald Trump had promised during his campaign to move the American embassy to Jerusalem, whose status is one of the thorniest issues of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Speaking at a forum in Istanbul, Erdogan said everyone should be careful on issues that concerned the status of Jerusalem, warning that even "relocating a stone" in the city could have serious implications. |

Ten Iranian border guards were killed by militants last month. Iran said Jaish al Adl, a Sunni militant group, had shot the guards with long-range guns, fired from inside Pakistan. |

Nigeria president vows support for freed Chibok girls Posted: 07 May 2017 01:50 PM PDT Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday vowed to help to 82 schoolgirls who have been freed from more than three years of Boko Haram captivity after a prisoner swap. The girls -- who were among more than 200 kidnapped in 2014 from the Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, northeast Nigeria -- travelled to the capital Abuja a day after their release to meet Buhari. "I cannot express in a few words how happy I am to welcome our dear girls back to freedom," Buhari said in a statement, pledging that the presidency would "personally supervise" authorities charged with ensuring the girls' "health, education, security and general well-being". |

Apple is now worth $800 billion for the first time ever Posted: 08 May 2017 11:14 AM PDT Freshman economics students will tell you that something is only "worth" whatever other people are willing to pay for it. In the case of Apple Inc, that means the company is now valued at $800 billion, a new all-time high for the company. But according to analysts, Apple could be on track to break $1 trillion if it plays its cards right.
Apple's stock briefly surpassed $153.44 per share today. With Apple's 5.214 billion shares on the market, that means the company's market cap is greater than $800 billion. The new high comes just weeks after Apple blew through $750 billion, a milestone at the time. Anticipation surrounding Apple is reaching a frenzy currently, as a mix of factors are pushing investors ever higher. The iPhone 8, widely expected to launch late this year or early 2018, is predicted to start a "super-cycle" of upgrading, which will make Apple a brand-new wave of profit. Wider economic factors unrelated to the product lineup are also in Apple's favor. Apple has some $250 billion in cash, mostly held overseas, which it doesn't return to the US thanks to the 35% tax that would impose. President Trump, however, has hinted at the possibility of a one-time tax break to encourage companies to bring their cash back to the US. A break, expected to be around 10%, would enable Apple to return cash to the US, and use it to either invest, or return to shareholders. Either scenario would be favorable for investors, hence the excitement. Finally, a general rally in the US stock market is also playing in Apple's favor. The NASDAQ 100 closed at an all-time high last week. Despite the optimism, there's still some notes for concern. Apple's $250 billion in overseas cash is tempered by over $100 billion in debt that it has in the US. Since it can't use any of its overseas cash, it has been using debt to conduct its share buyback program, invest in new technologies, and issue dividends. |
British PM May's Conservatives open up record lead: ICM poll Posted: 08 May 2017 07:24 AM PDT British Prime Minister Theresa May's Conservative Party has opened up the biggest lead on record for polls conducted by research firm ICM, suggesting it remains on course for a sweeping win in a national election in a month's time. An ICM poll published on Monday, which was conducted immediately after the Conservatives scored big wins in local elections last week, gave May's party a 22-point lead over the opposition Labour Party ahead of the June 8 national election. |

South Koreans vote for new leader after months of political vacuum Posted: 08 May 2017 03:32 PM PDT By Soyoung Kim and Ju-min Park SEOUL (Reuters) - South Koreans go to the polls on Tuesday to elect a new leader, looking to move on from a corruption scandal that brought down former President Park Geun-hye and shook the political and business elite to the core. Unless there is a major upset, liberal Moon Jae-in - who calls for a moderate approach on North Korea, wants to reform powerful family-run conglomerates and boost fiscal spending to create jobs - will be elected president. Park was ousted on charges of bribery and abuse of power in March to become South Korea's first democratically elected president to be forced from office. |

Venezuela opposition rejects Maduro plan to rework constitution Posted: 07 May 2017 06:42 PM PDT President Nicolas Maduro's plan for an elected assembly to draw up a new Venezuelan constitution faced headwinds on Sunday, when opposition parties refused to join the process amid continuing violent anti-Maduro protests. Although several opposition leaders had separately rejected Maduro's plan for a "people's" assembly, the center-right Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) formally announced Sunday that it would not participate. "We cannot take part in a fraudulent process," former presidential candidate Henrique Capriles said, appearing at a news conference with other MUD leaders. |
