China’s border with North Korea Posted: 22 Jun 2017 01:07 PM PDT China has long been North Korea's main ally and trading partner, but relations are increasingly strained by continued missile testing and provocations by the regime of Kim Jong Un. At least three-quarters of trade between the two nations flows through points along its 880-mile-long shared border, a divide that reveals stark contrasts in development. |

"It is with great sadness we announce the death of Rebecca who died the June 18th, 2017 in an accident in the home," read a statement on Burger's Instagram account, signed "The grieving family". |

Iraqi forces advance on Mosul mosque where IS declared caliphate Posted: 21 Jun 2017 08:35 AM PDT By Marius Bosch MOSUL, Iraq (Reuters) - U.S.-backed Iraqi forces on Wednesday began a push towards the mosque in Mosul where Islamic State declared a self-styled caliphate three years ago, military officials said. The forces had encircled the jihadist group's stronghold in the Old City of Mosul, where the medieval Grand al-Nuri Mosque is located, on Tuesday, they said. The Counter Terrorism Service (CTS) were 200-300 meters (yards) away from the mosque, an Iraqi military statement said, a view supported by a senior commander of the international coalition fighting Islamic State. |
Warmbier death 'unimaginable' for former North Korea detainee Posted: 21 Jun 2017 01:55 AM PDT A US missionary who spent two years in a North Korean jail said Wednesday he had never imagined that a valuable American prisoner like student Otto Warmbier could die after being taken into Pyongyang's custody. Kenneth Bae, who was arrested in 2012, sentenced to 15 years hard labour, then freed after a secret mission to Pyongyang led by then-US intelligence chief James Clapper, said he was reasonably well treated in prison as he was a diplomatic bargaining chip. "Everything depended on the US government's attitude," Korean-American Bae told South Korean broadcaster YTN in an interview broadcast live. |

Former Apple engineer Chris Lattner leaves Tesla just six months after starting Posted: 21 Jun 2017 05:00 PM PDT Tesla has always been rather aggressive about poaching talented engineers from Apple. This past January, though, Tesla kicked things up a notch when it hired Chris Lattner to head up the company's Autopilot Software division. Though not a household name, Lattner was a senior Apple engineer who helped spearhead the development of Swift in addition to overseeing Apple's Xcode team. Lattner's departure at the time was viewed as a significant loss for Apple and a huge boon for Tesla.
Not six months later, Lattner's time at Tesla has come to an end for rather murky reasons. In a tweet published yesterday evening, Lattner relayed that Tesla wasn't a good fit for him while adding that he's now open to exploring engineering positions at other companies. https://twitter.com/clattner_llvm/status/877341760812232704 With Lattner now out the door, Tesla has brought on deep learning expert Andrej Karpathy to leave the company's Autopilot efforts, as initially reported by TechCrunch.
Notably, Karpathy's LinkedIn profile reveals that he also spent nearly a year as an intern working on Deep Learning projects for DeepMind, the UK-based artificial intelligence company that Google ultimately acquired in 2014. |
U.S. will take weapons from Kurds after Islamic State defeat: Turkey Posted: 22 Jun 2017 03:52 AM PDT The United States has told Turkey it will take back weapons supplied to the Kurdish YPG militia in northern Syria after the defeat of Islamic State, Ankara said on Thursday, seeking to address Turkish concerns about arming Kurds on its border. Turkish defense ministry sources said U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis also promised his Turkish counterpart to provide a monthly list of weapons handed to the YPG, saying the first inventory had already been sent to Ankara. |
Islamic militants take hostages at Philippine school: army Posted: 21 Jun 2017 04:35 AM PDT Islamic militants occupied a primary school and took hostages in a southern Philippine village on Wednesday, a few hours drive from a city where other jihadists were fighting a month-long war, authorities said. Encinas said the gunmen had planted improvised bombs around the school, a small building in a rural area, and that soldiers had surrounded it. The unrest occurred in Pigkawayan, a farming town about 160 kilometres (100 miles) from Marawi city where fighters linked to the Islamic State (IS) group have been battling troops for a month in a conflict that has claimed hundreds of lives. |
Bitter Ga. loss provides backdrop for Democrats to reflect on party’s future Posted: 21 Jun 2017 09:22 AM PDT In the wake of Jon Ossoff's stinging defeat in the House race in Atlanta's suburbs last night, the question now is: How do Democrats pick up the pieces? Under this scenario, Democrats would embrace candidates who excoriate the wealthiest "1 percent" and promise to curb income inequality, zero out public college and university tuition and enact single-payer universal health care. There are also Democratic warnings that Ossoff's tepid handling of President Trump misfired. |
Posted: 20 Jun 2017 05:54 PM PDT The murder of a Muslim teenager has "revolutionised and inspired an entire community", according to a chaplain at the mosque where she was travelling on the night she was killed. The suspect, 22-year-old Darwin Martinez Torres, is currently being held without bail. |
Man invents tsunami sensor, internet obsesses over his dog Posted: 22 Jun 2017 08:47 AM PDT This pensive dog upstaged his owner and wasn't even aware of it. SEE ALSO: Friendly island doggo followed a street view mapper and photobombed all his shots Inventor Jerry Paros posed for a photograph for an article in the publication Nature about his invention — an ultra precise quartz sensor that could contribute to an early-warning system designed to detect shifts in the sea floor that cause tsunamis. Tsunamis are caused primarily by earthquakes that occur in the seafloor, since rapid shifts in elevation can generate waves that cross oceans in a matter of several hours. In 2011, a massive tsunami hit northern Japan following a magnitude 9.0 earthquake off the coast, resulting in the meltdown of nuclear reactors at the Fukashima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Gunmen attack Philippine village near war-torn city: military Posted: 20 Jun 2017 10:09 PM PDT Hundreds of gunmen attacked troops in a southern Philippine village on Wednesday in a hit-and-run assault that may have been intended to help Islamist militants engaged in a nearby urban war, authorities said. Five civilians who were used as human shields were missing, and soldiers were pursuing the assailants who had quickly retreated, military spokesman Brigadier General Restituto Padilla told reporters in Manila. Padilla said the gunmen attacked a military outpost at daybreak in Pigkawayan, a farming town about 160 kilometres (100 miles) from Marawi city where fighters linked to the Islamic State (IS) group have been battling troops for a month. |

T-Mobile is having network problems across the country, reports show Posted: 22 Jun 2017 07:15 AM PDT T-Mobile users across the country have woken up to widespread network outages. According to reports on the Down Detector and Twitter, thousands of users are having problems getting any data connectivity, even if a cell signal is still showing. The Down Detector map shows reports across the country, with a concentration on the East Coast. It could be a problem with a regional data center, or a nationwide problem that isn't being reported yet on the West Coast, thanks to the time difference.
T-Mobile has not publicly issued a statement yet, but is responding to individual users on the official @TMobile Twitter page, saying that they're looking into the issue. Some users say that turning LTE off can get data service working on 3G, but that's a temporary fix at best. For the time being, staying on Wi-Fi and turning your device on and off every hour or two is likely the best solution. Assuming that the outage is related to a software issue in T-Mobile's network, you can assume that a fix is being worked on at speed. Turning your device on and off forces it to re-register on the local cell tower, which means you'll get connectivity back as soon as the problem is resolved on T-Mobile's end. |

One of the sources said Alibaba and Tencent would lead the group of investors, while Baidu, the third of China's constellation of tech giants, has pulled out. |

The 737 MAX 10 is aimed at the biggest part of the commercial airline market -- single-aisle aircraft for medium-range flights -- and scooped up 326 orders worth nearly $40 billion at list prices as the jet promises even more fuel economy thanks to improvements to aerodynamics and engine performance.
