Lithuanian must be extradited to U.S. in $100 million email fraud case: court Posted: 17 Jul 2017 07:26 AM PDT A Lithuanian accused of swindling Facebook and Google out of more than $100 million through an email fraud scheme must be extradited to the United States to stand trial, a court in Vilnius ruled on Monday. Evaldas Rimasauskas denies the allegations and will appeal against the decision to a higher court, his lawyer said. "The person was identified and arrested by the intelligence forces. The court has sentenced the person to 10 years," deputy judiciary chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejeie said in a televised press conference. |
Needles everywhere: Drug crisis creates pollution threat Posted: 17 Jul 2017 11:27 AM PDT Syringes left by drug users amid the heroin crisis are turning up everywhere. In March alone, San Francisco collected more than 13,000 syringes, compared with only about 2,900 the same month in 2016. "I just want more awareness that this is happening," said Nancy Holmes, whose 11-year-old daughter stepped on a needle in Santa Cruz, California, while swimming. |
See the New Trillion-Ton Antarctic Iceberg in Image from Space Posted: 17 Jul 2017 07:06 AM PDT This baby's a behemoth: At approximately 2,200 square miles (5,800 square kilometers), the iceberg represents about 10 percent of the Larsen C ice shelf, which it was a part of until it broke off this week. The 'berg is slightly bigger than Delaware in area and similarly proportioned: While the Blue Hen State is 96 miles (154 km) long, the Larsen C iceberg measures about 99 miles (159 km) from end to end, meaning it would take a little over an hour and a half to traverse it by car, assuming you had a car that could manage 60 mph (nearly 100 km/h) on uneven, floating sea ice. An instrument aboard NASA's Aqua satellite snapped one of the first images of this new iceberg on July 12, 2017, using thermal measurements to distinguish between ice and open water. |

No, a fart didn't cause an American Airlines flight to evacuate all its passengers Posted: 17 Jul 2017 07:24 AM PDT In today's "Not The Onion" news, an American Airlines flight supposedly had to evacuate all its passengers after a person "passed gas," causing violent episodes of nausea and headaches. Except that this isn't true. SEE ALSO: Sorry everyone, but that shocking Amelia Earhart photo has been debunked — twice The story, which originally appeared on local WNCN-TV, quotes an unidentified spokesperson with Raleigh-Durham International Airport as saying that all passengers were taken off the plane after it landed at around 4 p.m. The incident allegedly started when passengers on the flight "became ill with nausea and headaches" spurred by a foul-smelling odor in the cabin. However, American Airlines spokesman Ross Feinstein categorically denied this report. Feinstein told Mashable that "the flight was not evacuated, and the story is not true". He said the plane had a odor issue, but that was due to a mechanical fault, not "passed gas." "We did have an aircraft from Charlotte to RDU this afternoon, that landed at 2:19 p.m. ET, and arrived the gate at 2:21 p.m. ET, that is currently out of service for an actual mechanical issue – and odor in the cabin. But it is not due to 'passed gas' as mentioned," Feinstein said. A spokesman at the airport, Andrew Sawyer, also confirmed that the plane was not evacuated, and said the whole incident was about a passenger who had to receive medical help after a foul smell: "A medical call for someone overcome by an odor was received after the plane deplaned normally," he said. The story was picked up by many news outlets, including NBC, The Daily Telegraph, and Fox News: Passengers on an American Air flight to Raleigh were forced to evacuate after someone 'passed gas,' officials said https://t.co/JUysbmlVyu pic.twitter.com/A5fqxfJ1np — NBC Charlotte (@wcnc) July 17, 2017 American Airlines flight evacuated in Raleigh, NC due to epic fart. https://t.co/pk3ekxPzsm@BigfootStacy @BAMedia45 @Grimerica @RT_com — FRINGE Media (@FreidrichDean) July 17, 2017 Image: google/screenshot WATCH: How 'The Walking Dead' Season 2 diverged from the comics |
Isil leader Baghdadi 'definitely still alive', say Iraqi and Kurdish intel chiefs Posted: 17 Jul 2017 01:33 AM PDT Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is still alive and hiding in Syria, despite Russian reports of his death, Iraqi and Kurdish counter-terrorism officials have said. "Baghdadi is definitely alive. He is not dead. We have information that he is alive. We believe 99 percent he is alive," Lahur Talabany, a top Kurdish counter-terrorism official said in an interview on Monday. Mr Talabany claimed the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) leader was located somewhere south of Raqqa, the capital of the jihadist group's so-called caliphate. "Don't forget his roots go back to al-Qaeda days in Iraq. He has years of experience in hiding and getting away from the security services," he told Reuters. "He knows what he is doing." Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi making what would have been his first public appearance in Mosul Credit: AP Russia had claimed it killed the elusive leader, who has not been seen in public since declaring Isil's so-called caliphate from the Iraqi city of Mosul in July 2014, in an air strike on a meeting of senior Isil commanders near Raqqa on May 28. The UK-based monitor Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) last week said they had "unconfirmed information" Baghdadi had been killed in Syria. However, Western and Iraqi officials could not confirm either of the claims. "Our approach is we assume he's alive until it's proven otherwise, and right now I can't prove it otherwise," Jim Mattis, US defence Secretary, said last week. "We'll go after him until he's gone." Abu Ali Basri, the director general of the Iraq's intelligence and counter-terrorism office in the ministry of interior, agreed Baghdadi was still alive and in Syria. "The monitoring cells deny news of his death and other reports regarding his health recently published." Baghdadi is not thought to have been in the Syrian city of Raqqa, which has been heavily targeted by the US-led coalition, for some time and is believed to have been moving between Isil territory along the Syria-Iraq border. The Telegraph was told by a resident of the village of Jdaidet al-Okaibat on the outskirts of the Isil-controlled eastern Syrian city of Deir Ezzor that he appeared on June 24 for Eid al-Fitr prayers, which mark the end of the holy Muslim month of Ramadan. He claimed a group of around 200 people took part in the prayers, led by Baghdadi, who looked "fit and well". "The group has sent sleeper cells from Syria to spread around the world to carry out attacks and spread chaos," Mr Basri said. Mr Talabany said Isil was shifting tactics despite low morale and it would take three or four years to eliminate the group. After defeat, the jihadists would wage an insurgency and resemble al-Qaeda on "steroids", he said. |

UAE arranged for hacking of Qatar government sites, sparking diplomatic row: Washington Post Posted: 16 Jul 2017 08:18 PM PDT The United Arab Emirates arranged for Qatari government social media and news sites to be hacked in late May in order to post fiery but false quotes linked to Qatar's emir, prompting a diplomatic crisis, the Washington Post reported on Sunday, citing U.S. intelligence officials. The emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, had been quoted in May as praising Hamas and saying that Iran was an "Islamic power," the Post reported. |

As Islamic State militants routed in Iraq, their families fear reprisals Posted: 17 Jul 2017 03:01 AM PDT By Isabel Coles BARTELLA, Iraq (Reuters) - Their husbands, sons and brothers are dead, but the women and children Islamic State militants left behind will live to pay the price for their actions. As Islamic State's days of ruling over vast swathes of Iraq come to an end, questions are emerging about what to do with their families. "All the men were killed," said 62 year-old Umm Hamoudi, who fled the Midan district last week with 21 members of her family -- all women and children. |
Leak: This is what the Pixel 2 XL might look like Posted: 17 Jul 2017 10:16 AM PDT Google will launch two Pixel models this year, according to multiple independent reports, including one that's going to look like the original Pixel and one that will embrace the full-screen design that's in fashion this year. HTC will reportedly make the Pixel 2 based on the iPhone-like Pixel design it used last year, while LG has been tasked with creating the Pixel 2 XL, which will look a lot like the LG G6 and the Galaxy S8 when it comes to screen size. A few days ago, we saw the first render from a trustworthy source that showed us what the Pixel 2 XL might look like. Based on that image, YouTube channel Concept Creator made the short video at the end of this post. The Pixel 2 XL should have minimal side bezels and smaller top and bottom bezels as well, if all the leaks are accurate. The back is still made of glass and metal, but the glass part is slightly smaller and doesn't include the rear-facing fingerprint sensor as is the case with previous Pixels. As for the camera, we're looking at a single-lens camera on the back instead of the dual-lens configuration most flagship phones have this year. The video shows the Pixel 2 XL in various colors, likely based on the rumor that said Google is considering a few crazy color options for the 2017 Pixel models. These rumors haven't yet been confirmed, but they certainly sound appealing. Google should unveil the new 2017 Pixel handsets in late September or early October, although nothing is official at this point in time. If this is the real design of the Pixel 2 XL, it's likely that we'll see it in more leaks down the road, including actual pictures of the handset as we get closer to release. In the meantime, enjoy the following concept clip. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3TNtuREToQ |
Canada fires drive thousands more out of their homes Posted: 16 Jul 2017 08:23 PM PDT Thousands of people fled their homes in western Canada over the weekend as strong winds fanned forest fires that have ravaged British Columbia province for more than a week. The inferno's progress prompted authorities to take new emergency measures, ordering the evacuation of 24,000 people in the region including the town of Williams Lake which is home to some 11,000 people, reported public broadcaster CBC. The province's transport minister, Todd Stone, told a news conference Sunday that between 36,000 and 37,000 people have so far been forced from their homes since the wild fires sparked by hot dry weather prompted a state of emergency to be declared on July 7. |
Muslims heed calls to avoid holy site over Israeli security steps Posted: 17 Jul 2017 12:05 PM PDT Muslims heeded calls Monday not to enter a Jerusalem holy site and protested outside after Israeli authorities installed metal detectors at entrances to the ultra-sensitive compound following an attack that killed two policemen. The compound was largely empty apart from tourists and Jewish visitors, with Muslims again praying and protesting outside the site instead of entering through the metal detectors. The Haram al-Sharif compound, known to Jews as the Temple Mount, includes the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa mosque. |

First ever wedding takes place in British Antarctic Territory Posted: 17 Jul 2017 07:41 AM PDT The first ever wedding has taken place in British Antarctic Territory this weekend, with the bride sewing an orange piece of tent on to her dress for the "something old". Polar field guides Julie Baum and Tom Sylvester got married in sub-zero temperatures, with a two-day celebration including a champagne breakfast. The wedding guest list was made up of couple's 18 colleagues who live and work at the British Antarctic Survey's (BAS) largest research station during the winter months, including the plumber, electrician and chef. Honda has radically redesigned the Accord for 2018 Posted: 17 Jul 2017 03:04 AM PDT Honda might have discontinued the Accord in some markets over the last year or two, but it's still a big success in other places such as the United States where it's currently the biggest-selling model in the midsize sedan segment of the market. It's therefore a pretty big deal when such a successful model undergoes a major restyle, and Honda has probably gone a little further with its recently unveiled 2018 Accord than some commentators may have expected. The all-new tenth-generation Honda Accord was recently revealed at an event in Detroit, the spiritual home of the US auto industry. |
Central California wildfire grows as hot, dry conditions persist Posted: 16 Jul 2017 12:09 PM PDT (Reuters) - A damaging wildfire burning on California's scenic central coast was expected to expand on Sunday afternoon, with higher temperatures, lower humidity and high winds working against efforts to contain it, officials said. By Sunday morning the so-called Whittier Fire burning near Santa Barbara was 36-percent contained, a reversal since Friday, when the blaze was 50-percent contained, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire, said. Cal Fire bumped up the number of dwellings to 17 damaged by the fire after getting a closer look at the affected area. |

Israel opposes Syria truce deal over Iran presence: official Posted: 17 Jul 2017 12:02 PM PDT Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu opposes the southwest Syria ceasefire agreed by Russia and the US since it would enable Iran to solidify its presence there, an official said Monday. The July 9 accord creating a de-escalation zone in the Daraa, Quneitra and Sweida regions includes areas that have seen Israel retaliate over stray fire into the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights from clashes between Syrian regime forces and rebels. Israel has also conducted several air strikes elsewhere in Syria since the civil war there erupted in 2011. |
